Based on the book of the same name by David Smith & Shelagh Armstrong published in 2003
Earth is a crowded place. As of January 1, 2002, the world’s population was 6 billion, 200 million. That 6,200,000,000! Imagine 100 people live in the global village………..
Numbers this big are hard to understand, but what if we imagined the whole population of the world as a village of 100 people? Imagine 100 people live in the global village………..
Imagine 100 people live in the global village………..
Nationalities 61 people are from Asia 13 people are from Africa 12 people are from Europe ,[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],61 12 13 8 5 1
More than half the people come from the 10 most populated countries… ,[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object]
In the global village there are almost 6000 languages but more than half of the people speak these eight…. ,[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],hello Hola Ahlan Ni hao ma Selamat pagi Namaste Zdraz vooy teh
Ages : here are the ages of the villagers ,[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],On average 1 person dies and 3 babies are born each year
Religions : in the village of 100 people ….. ,[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object]
Food : the villagers rear animals which help to produce food or are a source of food ,[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object]
There is no shortage of food in the global village but the food is not divided equally……… 50 people do not have a reliable source of food and are hungry some or all of the time 20 people are severely undernourished Only 30 people always have enough to eat
Air and water: fresh air and clean drinking water are necessities…. In the global village: 75 people have access to safe water in their homes or within a short distance 25 people have to spend a large part of each day getting water 60 people have access to adequate sanitation 40 people do not have access to public or household sewage disposal 68 people breathe clean air 32 people breathe air which is polluted
Schooling and Literacy Of the 38 school-aged villagers, only 31 children attend school Of the 88 people old enough to read, 71 people can read at least a little but 17 people cannot read at all More males are taught to read than females
Wealth If all the money in the village were divided equally, each person would have about $6200 per year. However the money is not divided equally…. The richest 20 have more than $9000 a year The poorest 20 have less than $1 per day . The average cost of food, shelter and necessities in the village is $4000 to $5000 per year
Access to Electricity In our global village… 76 people have electricity 24 people do not Of the 76 people who have electricity most use it only for light at night Some villagers have luxuries that depend on electricity. In the village there are: 42 radios 24 televisions 30 telephones 10 computers
How has the village grown? Around 3000 years ago only 1 person lived in the village 2500 years ago there were 2 people 2000 years ago there were 3 people 1000 years ago there were 5 people 500 years ago there were 8 people 350 years ago there were 10 people 200 years ago there were 17 people 100 years ago there were 32 people In 2002 there were 100 people
The village in the future? The rate of growth of the global village means that there will probably be 250 people in the village by the year 2100. This is an important number as many experts think that 250 is the maximum number of people the village can sustain .
