REVISION AS CAMBRIDGE GEOGRAPHY: RIVERS - DEPOSITIONAL LANDFORMS

  1. 1. AS GEOGRAPHY HYDROLOGY 4 QUESTIONS REVISION DEPOSITIONAL LANDFORMS
  2. 2. QUESTION 1 In which part of a river’s course are depositional landforms predominantly found?
  3. 3. ANSWER In the lower course, sometimes called old course, where the river becomes lazy, loosing its velocity thus encouraging deposition (sediments deposited).
  4. 4. QUESTION 2 What are levees?
  5. 5. ANSWER Levees are raised river banks. They can be natural and artificial (reinforced raised banks to protect against flooding).
  6. 6. QUESTION 3 How are levees formed by rivers?
  7. 7. ANSWER During flood conditions, water leaves the river channel and loses velocity (speed) as it spreads on to the surrounding area. Deposition occurs and material builds up on the banks. Further flooding causes this to be repeated and the levees to increase in height.
  8. 8. QUESTION 4 Name three other depositional landforms.
  9. 9. ANSWER Deltas, alluvial fans, floodplains, oxbow lakes, point bars.
