Editor's Notes

  1. The most important aspect in wrestling is having a strong mindset that is positive. You have to want to win, and want to be in good shape. If you think your not good enough or scared of your opponent, then your not going to be as successful as the wrestlers with a positive mindset. A wrestler needs to have will power not to eat all the food in the house. They should never have to reassure themselves that they’re strong and not weak. To wrestle in matches and tournaments the mental mindset has to be strong. If a wrestler looses a match they have to want to come back and win the rest, and not quit. Quitting is never an answer. A wrestler has to have the mindset that he can beat anyone on the mat. Craig, Donovan. "Fight." Letter. Fight! 2009: Pg 12 . Print.
  2. Scholastic wrestling is a style where one wrestler tries to physically control their opponent without injuring them. Objective of a Scholastic Wrestling Match: For a wrestler to pin his opponent by physically making both shoulder blades touch the mat. "Folk Style Wrestling Rules ." Phil Henning . Predicament Wrestling Score Book,      7 Dec. 2009. Web. 4 Mar. 2010. <http://www.win-magazine.com/      JRIC%20sub%20pages/Folkstyle%20Wrestling%20Rules%20by%20Phil%20Henning.pdf>.
  3. Points in the Neutral Position:1.) If one wrestler gets behind another wrestler’s back and has control, he is rewarded two points. 2.) If a wrestler takes his opponent from feet straight to his back, it’s two points for the take down plus additional back points. -For 3 seconds on back the wrestler is rewarded 2 points. -For 5 seconds held on back wrestler is rewarded three points.Offense and Defense Position’s:3.) If the wrestler on top is not working or showing progression in anyway, this is considered stalling. Points are rewarded to the bottom man if this continues.4.) The wrestler on defense (bottom), gets points by escaping or reversing the man on top. -Escaping is one point, and is when the wrestler is completely broken away and returns to the neutral position on feet. -Reversing is when the wrestler on defense (bottom) ends up on top of the offensive wrestler while gaining control. This is two points for the bottom wrestler. -A five point for the defense wrestler would be if he gained control with the offensive wrestler on his back for five seconds."Folk Style Wrestling Rules ." Phil Henning . Predicament Wrestling Score Book,      7 Dec. 2009. Web. 4 Mar. 2010. <http://www.win-magazine.com/      JRIC%20sub%20pages/Folkstyle%20Wrestling%20Rules%20by%20Phil%20Henning.pdf>.
  4. The first wrestler to score wins the match. The period starts on feet. If no one scores than it goes to double overtime. The wrestler who scores first In the wrestling match has choice to take top or bottom. This is only 30 seconds. The next wrestler has a chance to score points. If neither of them scores points thanThere is one last over time that is 30 seconds long. If the wrestler on bottom gets out,He wins, if he doesn’t get out, he loses. "Folk Style Wrestling Rules ." Phil Henning . Predicament Wrestling Score Book,      7 Dec. 2009. Web. 4 Mar. 2010. <http://www.win-magazine.com/      JRIC%20sub%20pages/Folkstyle%20Wrestling%20Rules%20by%20Phil%20Henning.pdf>.
  5. Objective of a free style wrestling match: To Pin opponent, but different rules are used to score points, and wrestler’s are injured a lot easier. In freestyle wrestling locking hands is legal, and tossing an opponent over your head ends a match. If a wrestler breaks 90 degree’s two points are rewarded to the dominant wrestler who made this happen. There is only 15-20 seconds to try and turn someone for points to break 90 degree’s and if nothing is done it starts back on feet. Defense for freestyle is to just lay there and not get turned. Defense for scholastic is to get up and out, because stalling will be called if someone just lays there. There are also breaks between periods. The periods are best out of three. If there is a pin the match is over. "International Federation of Associated Wrestling Styles ." Modification to The      Wrestling Rules and Competition System motivation of change. N.p., n.d.      Web. 4 Mar. 2010. <http:/www.ca-usaw.org/fila_rules.pdf>.
  6. Three periods are two minutes each. If tied, overtime is one minute. One opponent is green and one is red, depending on what they’re wearing. This is what determines the score so it doesn’t get mixed up. Wrestler’s shake hands, and the first period the wrestler’s begin in the Neutral Position. When the period is over the ref flips a green and red coin, and which ever one it lands on that person has choice to pick top, bottom, the neutral position, or to let the other person pick first. After the second period the other wrestler picks which position to start at. There is also blood time, injury time, and some recovery time. West Virginia Wrestling ." Over View of Wrestling Rules. National Federation of      High Schools Association , n.d. Web. 4 Mar. 2010. <http:/www.wvmat.com/      overview.htm>.
  7. Wrestling Shoes are made so that there is traction to the mat. If normal shoes are worn it could hurt the other wrestler because they’re a lot heavier. Head gear is used so that wrestler’s ears don’t get cauliflower. Knee pads are also worn to protect mat burn and knee injuries. Singlet's are worn so that wrestler’s can move around without worrying about fingers or other things getting caught in a shirt. -Ryan Ginsburg.
  8. Wrestling was very popular in the middle ages and is traced back to France through cave drawings 15,000 years ago. In many Olympic games wrestling was the most popular and supreme sport. France, Japan, and England would wrestle in houses and have people watch, and it was the most popular sport. Wrestling was one of the first sports. People wrestled in holiday celebrations, and people in the army used it as exercise. “Of the early American styles, only the catch-as-catch-can style survives, and it has evolved into the modern form of collegiate wrestling.”(http://library.thinkquest.org/3369/wrestle/history.htm)-The first wrestling tournament was held 1888 in New York, and the first modern Olympics tournament was held 1904 in Saint Louis. -In 1983 wrestling became a national governing body of amateur wrestling for people of all ages. "History of Wrestling ." Wrestling History. N.p., n.d. Web. 4 Mar. 2010.      <http:/library.thinkquest.org/3369/wrestle/history.htm>.
  9. -A pin (fall) is six points for the team. – A fall is when both shoulder blades are stuck to the mat for two seconds in high school and one second in college.-A technical fall is five points for the team. It’s when a wrestler beats the other opponent by fifteen points. In college there must be at least one set of near fall (back points) in order to receive the five points for a tech. If not then it’s just a major decision.-If a wrestler wins by eight points then they receive four points for there team. -If a wrestler wins by points from the margin 1-7 in points they earn three team points. -A disqualification, injury default, or forfeit of a wrestler gives the other team six points. "Folk Style Wrestling Rules ." Phil Henning . Predicament Wrestling Score Book,      7 Dec. 2009. Web. 4 Mar. 2010. <http://www.win-magazine.com/      JRIC%20sub%20pages/Folkstyle%20Wrestling%20Rules%20by%20Phil%20Henning.pdf>.
  10. There are some technical violations in wrestling that if you do by accident or on purpose points will be deducted. -Locking hands around any part of the body is one point for the other wrestler. Locking hands around the head is always illegal, but around the waste or stomach is only aloud of the opponent is on his back. -Cautions- Have to be set and ready when the ref says set, and if there are any sudden movements before the whistle a caution warning occurs. If this happened more then three times a point is rewarded to the other wrestler. If it occurs another time after that another point is given to the other wrestler. -If a wrestler is stalling from any position and not working at all he is warned. If it occurs points are rewarded to the other wrestler. -Any unsportsmanlike like things said or done will result to warnings, points, or even a disqualification. (Depending on the ref.)-If a wrestler is on his back and screams an automatic four points are rewarded to the dominant wrestler on the offensive position. "Folk Style Wrestling Rules ." Phil Henning . Predicament Wrestling Score Book,      7 Dec. 2009. Web. 4 Mar. 2010. <http://www.win-magazine.com/      JRIC%20sub%20pages/Folkstyle%20Wrestling%20Rules%20by%20Phil%20Henning.pdf>.
  11. In high school, the weight classes are 103, 122, 119, 125, 130, 135, 140, 145, 152, 160, 171, 189, 215, 285(HTW). "Amateur Wrestling News ." Proposed New High School Wrestling Weight Classes .      Tom, n.d. Web. 4 Mar. 2010. <http:/www.wrestlingpod.com/wrestling-news/      w3115/>.

Web. 4 Mar. 2010.      <http:/www.playsportstv.com/wrestling/      wrestling-moves_single-leg-mat-tap-drill-part-1>.-The arm bar is a great move to use while being on the top offense position to turn the opponent over. 13. -In Wrestling scoring a takedown from a sprawl is an easy way to tire out an opponent and will rack up the points. It’s a great defensive move that counters a wrestler’s shots. How to Sprawl." Sprawling in Wrestling. N.p., n.d. Web. 4 Mar. 2010. <http:/      www.ehow.com/how_4523953_sprawl-wrestling.html>.-Standing up and escaping form the offensive opponent on top is very important because if a wrestler is being controlled on bottom, he can be called for stalling or could result to be turned. Staying on the bottom position is also very tiring. How to Stand Up." Escaping in Wrestling. N.p., n.d. Web. 4 Mar. 2010. <http:/      www.ehow.com/video_2350383_stand-up-youth-wrestling-move.html>.
  14. -Wrestlers need to maintain a weight because if they don’t competition will be very hard. Wrestlers will get tired easy and won’t have enough energy if their weight fluctuates a lot. A good source of cards, protein, and electrolytes are great to consume. It’s very important for wrestler’s to maintain a good nutritious diet to enhance their performance on the mat. Depending on the wrestler, there are many basic diets to follow. -The main reason why wrestler’s ‘cut weight is because the best wrestlers are down to weight with pure muscle and barely any fat. Fat takes away muscle and a person who isn’t all the way down to weight isn’t going to be as strong with the person with all the muscle. Cutting weight correctly is very important. The best way is to cut weight is to diet properly, while loosing fat and building up muscle. Men's Health. "Food Fixes." Men's Health 2009: 158. Print.
  15. The scarecrow wrestling drill is very affective for conditioning. Shown in the video above, this drill makes a wrestlers legs stronger and more accustomed to a wrestling match. The wrestler who has his arms up gets conditioned just by holding his arms up. This drill is timed and from week to week the time increases to make the wrestler persevere to have better conditioning in a wrestling match. - http://fliiby.com/file/395961/grs43fkmll.htmlPull ups are also a very important aspect of wrestling. This is true because of the physical aspects of being able to use back and arm muscles that are used in wrestling matches. Pull ups are proven to increase speed and power during a wrestling match. -http://www.shapefit.com/wrestling-workouts-speed-power.html
  16. The most important muscles a wrestler needs to workout are the glutes, hamstrings, and lower back muscles. The video above shows a great workout for a wrestler to gain more power and speed in the neutral and bottom positions. -http://ezinearticles.com/?10-Strength-Training-Commandments-For-Wrestlers!&id=107165As a wrestler, weight lifting should be done slowly and accurately towards each muscle. Workouts shouldn’t be so long because the body needs to be able to recuperate the next day. Failing while working out is very important. While weight lifting a wrestler should fail to do the last rep and have someone pick it up for him. This rips more muscle and helps it rebuild faster.--http://ezinearticles.com/?10-Strength-Training-Commandments-For-Wrestlers!&id=107165
  17. Wrestling Hygiene is very important because many skin diseases can be passed from the sweat on the mat and germs from other wrestlers. There are many solutions that wrestlers can use to prevent skin diseases. Before wrestling practice, ken shield is a good product to use to prevent skin diseases. It’s a creamy substance that dissolves onto the skin to block diseases and germs. It can be purchased on wrestling web sites or online. There are also different types of lotions and wipes to be used before and after matches or practices. These products can also be used to before or after any physical activity or sports.-http://www.usawrestlingproducts.com/modules/cart/navigate.php/nav_id/213Wrestling mat cleanser is also important so that the mats stay germ free. Wrestling mats should be mopped before and after use at all times.-http://images.google.com/imgres?imgurl=http://www.wrestlingaids.com/prod_images/KC001C_l.jpg&imgrefurl=http://www.wrestlingaids.com/detail.asp%3Fpid%3DKC001C%26submenu%3D2%26cat%3DCMS&usg=__MGV2nj1-_AmGQXR909Y9oI9estw=&h=400&w=400&sz=15&hl=en&start=9&um=1&itbs=1&tbnid=dBxh86ZVicA7eM:&tbnh=124&tbnw=124&prev=/images%3Fq%3Dwrestling%2Bhygiene%2Bproducts%26um%3D1%26hl%3Den%26safe%3Doff%26sa%3DN%26tbs%3Disch:1
  18. There are many strategies that can be used in wrestling. One of the best strategies that can be used is to control the tempo of the wrestling match, while making your opponent wrestle your style. This basically means to control the match how you want it to go. Wrestler’s can do this by mixing up the way he attacks. If your stronger than your opponent you should try and overpower him, but technique mostly beats strength. A wrestler who keeps his cool is more likely make the other wrestler frustrated and that makes the frustrated wrestler make mistakes. Never stop wrestling until the whistle blows, and use moves that are drilled in practice. Using moves that a wrestler doesn’t practice can result to a mistake and that could be a loss.http://sfuk.tripod.com/articles/sfukwrestlingtips.html
  19. There are many different tournaments to qualify too. One of the most popular tournament to qualify for is the Eastern Nationals. This is the whole east cost of the United States involved to qualify in one wrestling tournament. First, a wrestler entering needs to select a weight class and age category the he/she fits in. The top three continue on to the regional's after the first tournament, districts. At regional’s, the top four wrestlers continue on to compete in the Eastern Nationals. The top eight wrestlers in the east cost are recognized for their hard work. On the east cost of the United States there are ten districts in each region. The top three wrestlers in each region continue on to the region they entered. (South, North, East, West.) The top four wrestlers from the south, north, east, and west regions qualify to the Eastern National Mawa Wrestling Tournament.Taking first at regional's is a big advantage because they would wrestle a fourth place finisher from another region. The 2nd placer from a region wrestles a 3rd placers from another region. -http://www.mawawrestling.com/masterscholasticschedule10.html
  20. My application is to train a wrestler to win big matches. I did this by researching the best training methods. The most important aspects of training a wrestler have to deal with conditioning, weight training, technique, nutrition, and a wrestlers mind set. I researched each one of those categories and had my wrestler do the best exercises and drills. Weight lifting is very important so that the wrestler can over power his opponent. Technique is the most important aspect of wrestling, but to use technique conditioning and nutrition need to be applied in a healthy way. Troy is a very athletic person who fit my application the best, and he has worked hard all year to improve on his new wrestling career.
  21. To make Troy a better wrestler and to have him win tough matches, the lower back and abdominal muscles should be strengthened so that he can use certain moves to beat his opponent. Leg raises are great for the lower back and lower abdominal muscles. This exercise helps with a stand up from the defensive position and can help in other positions during a wrestling match. -10 Strength Training Commandments for Wrestler's. Recreation Sports, n.d. Web. 5      Apr. 2010. <http://ezinearticles.com/      ?10-Strength-Training-Commandments-For-Wrestlers!&id=107165>.
  22. Strength training is just important as conditioning and other exercises. The reason why is because having power over another wrestler can take away from their technique. Having more power and strength over another wrestler is a huge advantage. The best way to gain power and strength is to do sets of bench, and squats. Benching should be done slowly with good form and so should squatting. This allows the muscles of the wrestler to aim for strength and power rather than just looking good and gaining now muscle tone or power. 10 Strength Training Commandments for Wrestler's. Recreation Sports, n.d. Web. 5      Apr. 2010. <http://ezinearticles.com/      ?10-Strength-Training-Commandments-For-Wrestlers!&id=107165>.
  23. A very important aspect of wrestling is perseverance, and shown in the picture in the top right Troy is lifting more weight a month later. He is able to do this because he pushes works at it everyday and eats the right foods and proteins to help do this. It is down on the mat that he is a lot stronger, and he continues to use his double leg to take his opponents down. While taking his opponents down, there is a bigger impact and they go to their back easier. In this picture he is lifting twenty pounds more and reps it 12 more times. -10 Strength Training Commandments for Wrestler's. Recreation Sports, n.d. Web. 5      Apr. 2010. <http://ezinearticles.com/      ?10-Strength-Training-Commandments-For-Wrestlers!&id=107165>.
  24. In wrestling there is a hydration test to make sure that wrestler’s aren’t cutting to much weight. There is a procedure done to each wrestler, to insure that he/she is not loosing to much weight to the point that it’s unhealthy. The wrestler is weighed on the scale, and the weight is recorded. A special tool measures how much fat is in certain area’s of the body. Matching the wrestlers weight compared to fat concludes how much weight the wrestler can loose while still being healthy. Troy’s first step towards his wrestling career was to pick the appropriate weight, by seeing how much fat content he could loose. Wrestler’s cut weight because muscle helps a lot more than fat, and having less body fat can help be stronger than opponents. While getting weight and fat checked, there is a hydration test to make sure the wrestler didn’t all ready cut all the weight off before taking the test. This hydration test makes sure the wrestler isn’t all ready completely down to weight or unhealthy in anyway. This rule was made because to many wrestler’s were cutting to much weight, and one died because of it. -Wrestling with Regulations . N.p., n.d. Web. 6 Apr. 2010.      <http://www.momentummedia.com/articles/tc/tc1602/wrestling.htm>.
  25. The best way to pass the hydration test is to drink plenty of water. Eight glasses of water should be drank before the test, or even more. However, there are many wrestler’s who cheat passed this. High school and college wrestler’s have got caught filling either water or urine in a visine bottle to make their urine more hydrated. At some colleges, the trainers actually watch the wrestler’s take the hydration test. Some wrestler’s would keep the visine bottle in their briefs, and squeeze the bottle and they wouldn’t know. These wrestler’s resulted in being suspended. The best way to pass the hydration test is to drink plenty of water and work out a couple weeks ahead of time, and reduce the weight while being healthy and hydrated. To many wrestler’s have gotten severely injured from cutting weight. Cutting weight can result to a wrestler having a kidney problem, or even dying. -Wrestling with Regulations . N.p., n.d. Web. 6 Apr. 2010.      <http://www.momentummedia.com/articles/tc/tc1602/wrestling.htm>.
  26. Once a wrestler finds his minimum weight, he can wrestle a higher weight, but when he wants to cut weight for harder tournaments he has to follow a weight chart. Troy followed his weight chart throughout the wrestling season. His weight chart allowed him to lose 1.5 pounds per week. So if he wrestled 112 pounds to get to 103 it would take more than a couple weeks because the proper amount of weight would have to be lost. Losing only 1.5 pounds a week is a lot healthier than trying to loose ten in a week. To many college wrestler’s were suffering from serious health issues because of to many cutting weight. Wrestler’s have also died from it. -"New weight Management Rules ." MomsTeam. N.p., n.d. Web. 7 Apr. 2010.      <http://www.momsteam.com/sports/wrestling/      new-weight-management-rules-for-high-school-wrestling-now-in-effect>.
  27. Wrestling is one of the toughest sports that can be played, and Troy demonstrates this throughout his career. The night before a big tournament good sleep is important and eating properly is a key aspect of the sport. No matter where a wrestler is from, it is a way of life and it helps with discipline and other great aspects to life. One way it helps in life is to realize that food and water are so valuable. Wrestler’s have to diet and while doing this they realize how lucky they’re to eat healthy and to have food and water compared to other countries. The workouts are extremely hard and wrestler’s wake up soar from day to day. Weight is always being checked after everything a wrestler eats. It is one of the toughest sports around. -USA Wrestling Nation. N.p., n.d. Web. 6 Apr. 2010.      <http://www.usawrestlingnation.com/blogs/entry/      CUBA-BLOG-Wrestling-is-a-way-of-life-for-many-Cubans>.
  28. Drilling is one of the most important aspects of technique training. I researched the best moves for a beginner wrestler to practice and I showed these moves on a practice partner, so Troy could do them on his practice partner. One of the first moves he practices in this video is a double leg takedown. This move is affective in many of his wrestling matches. I also taught him a couple of ways to finish this move, and the best way I taught him was to finish the takedown on a diagonal straight to his opponents back. In Matt Siracusa article, he explains how important drilling is for technique. Practicing moves over and over is the way to gain muscle memory so in matches the wrestler automatically goes from move after move. In big matches one little mistake can cost the match. “All wrestler’s should have basic technique, and a beginning wrestler or advanced wrestler should drill to continue on to get better.” –Mike Kulczycki (Michigan’s assistant wrestling coach.) Drilling techniques in different positions is how to advance and get better at the sport. -"Drilling with Michigan Wrestling." Stack. Matt Siracusa, n.d.
