Latest Reef Aquarium Science: The Nano Reef Whatever your views on the ethics of keeping salt water fish and other aquatic critters as pets, they are in the mainstream pet market and need to be taken care of. The latest reef aquarium science with advances in filtration, lighting and water chemistry have made the animals living in a tank far happier than just about ten years ago, when most salt water creatures in a tank died. One of the reasons is the nano reef tank.
What Is It? Nano reef tanks are small salty water aquariums that usually have live coral in them that are 20 gallons are less. (Some hobbyists into the latest reef aquarium science will accept anything up top 40 gallons as a nano reef). Decades ago, if you wanted to keep a reef aquarium, you had to have at least a 50 gallon tank … and thousands of dollars to lose.
What Were The Advances? Nano reef tanks were not possible until there were advances in fish keeping technology. This was also from zoos and professional aquariums trying to preserve threatened species like seahorses as well as the pet trade. The latest reef aquarium science included better, more compact lighting systems, smaller water agitation and circulation pumps and more efficient filters.
Latest reef aquarium science Another advance in the latest reef aquarium science has been that of the development of a more natural sand layer for the bottom of the tank. You just can't use any old sand. You need sand that's going to support the good bacteria that your salt water creatures will need to survive. This special sand for reef aquariums is usually called "live sand".
Successful discoveries But one of the most successful discoveries in the latest reef aquarium science that has lead to happier salt water wet pets is the realization that the water has to be kept cold – much colder than for even goldfish. At first, it was difficult to get a tank chiller that could chill and not freeze a tank less than 50 gallons. Now, chillers have been made to work for the small size of nano tanks.
Professional aquariums Another advance welcomed by hobbyists as well as professional aquariums is that this technology has gotten cheaper as well as smaller. Ten years ago, you needed at least two thousand US dollars to even think about setting up a salt water tanks. Now, you can set up a decent nano tank for about $300 (not including wet pets).
