Abstract
This study investigates the effectiveness of
auditory training for adult cochlear implant users
and the factors underlying auditory learning.
Background
o Small changes in CI users’ speech perception
following auditory training.
o Factors underlying auditory learning are not
well established.
o Low to medium quality evidence cannot guide
practice.
Survey on variability in clinical practice
Research question
Does verbal-based training lead to greater
changes in listening abilities of adult cochlear
implant users when presented in the auditory
mode compared to the visual mode?
Methods
Cross-over design
Training programs
Degraded information
Adaptive training; 5 days/week; 20min/day.
Outcome measures
o Auditory abilities
o Cognitive and executive functions
o Physiological correlates of change (ERP,
oscillations, pupillometry) based on XR1.1.3
o Self-perceived performance (including well-
being and quality of life)
Implications
A better understanding of the benefits of
different aspects of auditory training will support
evidence-based practices.
