Abu Sayyaf is an Islamist separatist terrorist group based in Isabela City in the southern Philippines. It was founded in the early 1990s by Abdurajak Abubakar Janjalani and has since had multiple leaders. While originally focused on separatism, the group shifted over time to criminal activities like kidnapping for ransom in order to fund its operations. Some of its most notorious attacks include the bombing of a ferry in 2004 that killed over 100 people and the kidnapping of tourists from a Malaysian resort in 2000.

This article examines the phenomenon of terrorism in South Asia. As we know that South Asia has a long history of Conflicts, terrorism and trans-boarder ethnicity. The developmental challenges faced by most of countries in South Asia leads to unemployment, Socio-economic marginalization, separatism, ethenic nationalism and religious extremism. The technological threshold is low despite claims of high technology. Over 40 percent of total population are illiterate. There is human rights abuse, unemployment and uncontrolled corruption. These and other factors make for a complicated crisis history marked by an assortment of events, political violence and terrorism. South Asia is the most terror affected area of the world. Each country suffers varying degree of insurgency and terror. In fact all countries are intertwined as far as terror networking is concerned. The major conflicts in the region between India and Pakistan keep the resolution of terror problem elusive. With these threats to political stability and territorial integrity, South Asia remains a region with a high potential for violence and conflict. Terrorism is a disease which needs to be treated rather than fought. We are not fighting an enemy but mentally sick and misguided who must be brought on course by looking in to their grievances and aspirations. In order to find a lasting solution for terrorism in south Asia, it is necessary to find the basic structure (i.e; Anatomy) and Root causes of terrorism in South Asia, so that the problem can be dealt more effectively. This article also provides a detailed account regarding these complicated issues

While the threat of a terrorist attack is still very real in certain areas of the Asia Pacific, the region has seen several key country risk levels drop or remain low for 2016, according to Aon’s Terrorism and Political Violence Map, created in collaboration with The Risk Advisory Group. This year Philippines, Thailand and Myanmar all reported a decrease in risk from high to moderate while Australia’s risk level remained low. Terrorism is cited as the main concern in Australia and Thailand and while the political environment in both Philippines and Myanmar has stablished somewhat, civil unrest and political violence are still the principal threats the countries face.

Al Qaeda is the terrorist organization founded by Osama bin Laden in 1988. The group’s ideology is founded on the premise that Muslims who follow secular leaders are treating these leaders as gods, and therefore, are apostates because they are disobeying the first principle in Islam, the assertion that “There is no deity but Allah.” Adherents to this ideology claim to be defending Islam when they kill these Muslims and Westerners who advocate or support this form of apostasy. Al Qaeda’s goal is to liberate Muslim lands of “apostate” governments and establish an Islamic state, a caliphate, in their stead. Osama bin Laden envisioned al Qaeda as a global network that led the jihad against the United States, the West, and allied Muslim governments. The group known today as al Qaeda core serves as the center of the al Qaeda network, which now also includes groups recognized by the al Qaeda emir, or leader, as affiliates. These are al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula, al Shabaab, al Qaeda in Iraq, Jabhat al Nusra, al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb, and the Islamic Emirate of the Caucasus. Recovered al Qaeda correspondence, especially from the Abbottabad raid, reveals continued communications about ongoing developments and operations between senior leaders in Pakistan and leaders of affiliated groups. CTP’s Threat Update series is a weekly update and assessment of the al Qaeda network. The al Qaeda network update includes detailed assessments of al Qaeda’s affiliates in Yemen, the Horn of Africa, and the Maghreb and Sahel. 1. U.S. administration officials have signaled that the U.S. may take a more aggressive stance against the al Houthis in Yemen to counter Iranian influence. An aggressive position against the al Houthi movement, which is not an Iranian proxy, would further isolate the al Houthis and drive them further into Iran’s orbit. U.S. intervention against the al Houthis would strengthen the Saudi-led coalition and its preferred government in Yemen, led by internationally recognized President Abdu Rabbu Mansour Hadi. The Hadi government has struggled to gain legitimacy even in territory in southern Yemen under its control. Former president Ali Abdullah Saleh, the al Houthis’ current partner, possesses significant political capital, military capabilities, and public support. 2. Al Shabaab may be expanding terrain under its control, using the sanctuary that it retained in south-central Somalia to support operations. Predicted food shortages may make conditions more permissive for al Shabaab. Somalia is suffering from a severe drought that may cause widespread hunger on par with the 2010-2011 famine, which killed more than 250,000 people. The Somali government is ill-prepared to address a crisis of this magnitude. An insufficient aid response from the government would allow al Shabaab to position itself as a legitimate source of relief and governance. External factors, including the likely expulsion of Somali refugees from Kenya before Kenyan general elections, may exacerbate the crisis in Somalia. 3. Al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM) may be facilitating the growth of a Salafi-jihadi insurgency within the Fulani ethnic group across borders in the Sahel region. The Macina Liberation Front (MLF), an ethnically Fulani AQIM-associated group, is challenging the state in central Mali by forcing secular schools to remain closed in Mopti region. Ansar al Islam, a related Salafi-jihadi Fulani group, is pursuing a similar campaign in Burkina Faso. A Fulani insurgency is also challenging the Nigerian state, though Salafi-jihadi organizations have not yet infiltrated this movement. AQIM and other Salafi-jihadi groups may use ties into the Fulani community to expand their area of operations in the Sahel. AQIM has tapped into Tuareg networks to advance its objectives in West Africa in the past.

* Min 350 words* Describe the evolution of the leadership and organization of the al Qaeda terrorist organization after the September 2001 terrorist attacks, including the rise of ISIS. After reviewing the assigned readings for the week, it is apparent the evolution of leadership and organization of al Qaeda after the September 2001 evolved into much more than just the Islamic State (ISIS or ISIL). As we are all aware, Osama bin Laden was the founder of the terrorist organization known as al Qaeda. Following bin Laden’s death in May of 2011, Ayman al-Zawahiri was identified as his successor, creating his own group, ISIS. This group stemmed from the initial al Qaeda in Iraq (AQI) but separated from al Qaeda central, which was known to be the world’s most violent jihadist terrorist group. While the United States has invested a substantial amount of money, time, and lives into the war in Afghanistan, it has successfully compromised al Qaeda’s ability to employ attacks. However, as stated in Al-Qaeda’s evolution since 9/11, “it has impelled the group to decentralize into regional ‘franchises’ – including AQI, AQAP in Saudi Arabia and then Yemen, and AQIM in North Africa and the Sahel, and more loosely, al-Shabaab in East Africa and Boko Haram in West Africa – and to focus on regional objectives.” Even with the United States’ involvement, the terrorist organizations shifted their focus to other countries such as Africa and Syria. After ISIS disassociated itself from al Qaeda in 2014 they managed to create a more aggressive and violent army in Syria (more so than the Syrian al Qaeda affiliate, Jabhat al-Nusra) and evolved into the most dominant jihadist group in Syria. Osama bin Laden’s son, Hamza, had risen to a leadership role, but was eventually killed by US forces in September of 2019. Hamza bin Laden was known just as his father as a charismatic leader. He brought a sense of youth to al Qaeda that had been lacking for years prior. Initially debuting in the world of terror during his late twenties, he enabled better recruitment utilizing social media, which ISIS had not invested a maximum effort in. In addition to this, Zawahiri (OBL’s initial successor) was an Egyptian and lacked the respect from OBL’s initial followers who believed Zawahiri was worthy. Whereas Hamza bin Laden was able to gain respect mostly due to his lineage. 2. Over many decades, terrorist groups have either succeeded or failed in accomplishing their ideological goals. Either way, they eventually fade away, either after they achieved their purpose or after many failed attempts that cause groups to split apart from infighting. Al-Qaeda (AQ) has not met its ideological goal, nor has it had many successes. Still, it has not split asunder like others before it. Why is that? The answer lies within Osam.

These are the conditions to prevent, in 2026, right-wing extremists from regaining the Presidency of the Republic, expanding their participation in state governments and the National Congress and putting their nefarious anti-social and anti-national project into practice.
