AWS Community Day CPH - Three problems of Terraform
Welcome To The New Generation Appstores
1. LIVE WIMAX NETWORK TOUR
Going APPSolutely Crazy!
Will it fulfill all that it promises?
As an avid iPhone user, I have recently developed quite a fascination
with the concept of an Apps Store. How does it work? Who uses it?
etc.. I know how to download from it.. but what happens before the
application reaches me has been a mystery I was keen to solve, so
when I read about Greenpacket and its Appstore demo on Facebook
and twitter , I realised this was my chance to get behind the Apps
scene at the AppsXchange Asia conference on 16 – 17 November
2009 , I jumped at it!
So there I was bright and early at the Greenpacket booth @ JW
Marriot Hong Kong. The booth looked good, the staff was friendly,
replying to my million and one questions about the Apps Store. Green
Packet was launching a platform for Operators to build and host
their application store. The platform , which is called Infinit Service
Management Platform (ISMP) is very interactive and I was encour-
aged to explore it and understand what actually powers an applica-
tion store!

What is ISMP all about?
All of us download applications onto our Iphones from
the apple apps store or onto our Nokia’s from the Ovi
Apps store. But have we really wondered how these
stores work? Where does the content come from? Who
gets paid.. etc etc..?
Application stores are fast gaining popularity and those
involved are raking in huge revenues. Although Operators
play a vital role enabling connectivity, current application
store business models do not grant Operators a fair
share of the revenue.
ISMP enables Operators to start their own application Greenpacket’s staff demonstrating ISMP to the audience
at a cost efficient rate and a faster time to market. ISMP also intelligently recommends relevant applications to
subscribers, based on lifestyle patterns and purchasing behaviour.
Additionally, ISMP offers Operators a centralized avenue to host and manage all services and applications. With
this, subscribers can indulge in cool applications or utilizes the Operator’s self-care services from a single inter-
face. Content developers also benefit from a centralized system to access development kits and submit or obtain
approvals for their applications. With a dynamic applications marketing mechanism, all applications gain favorable
competition and selling ground.
2. Will it fulfill all that it promises?
ISMP Put to Test
Naturally there are different classes of users for an application store –
the Operator itself, content developers and of course, subscribers. ISMP
is designed to cater for each user type and supports corresponding inter-
face for each type. How thoughtful!
Eager to put on all hats, I tried logging in as an Operator, content devel-
oper and finally a normal user (subscriber).
Demo Test Element 1 – Operator Login
Logging in as an operator, took me to a dashboard (see sample below), where I could view all the existing applica-
tions according to name, date created, category etc.. all along with helpful descriptions and suggest prices. I
could also view the already purchased applications and suggested applications.
This interface is clean and clutter free, allowing the operator to browse at ease and get all the information and
help they need. This clutter free, friendly interface coupled with fast loading despite a so-so speed connection
ensures that ISMP passes the first test with flying colors!

3. Demo 2 – Content Developer Login
It just kept getting more and more interesting! The
helpful demonstrators remembered me telling them
that I would love to get behind the scenes and into
the shoes of a content developer to see how my fa-
vorite applications go from idea to finish and invited
me to be a content developer and upload my applica-
tion onto the ISMP! (see Figure 1.2)
Figure 1,2—Add Gadget View Screen
I had a good time, thinking up of an application and then filling in a very comprehensive questionnaire that detailed
the name, the description, pricing, pricing methods, categories etc.. and offered me development kits and tools to
enhance my application along with various marketing options etc..
Once again, a plain, simple and to the point interface with no unnecessary frills , attains its objective of assisting
a developer get his idea off the ground and into the virtual market, ISMP sails through the second test too!
Demo 3 – Subscriber Login
I had now seen what it took to get the application from idea to finish. It was
now time to see how they were marketed. I was invited to log in as a sub-
scriber. The system allows me to create profiles and I choose to log in as a
student interested in games and social applications and second as a young
professional with an interest in trading, Forex and the stock market.
ISMP categorises the applications
according to well defined categories
and allows you to browse through
applications that you are already
subscribing to , search for new appli-
Figure 1.3—User’s interface cations and if that was not enough, it
also intelligently recommends applications according to your interest pro-
files.
As a subscriber I was not only able to browse and subscribe to applica-
tions in a safe environment, connect to my other friends who were sub-
scribing to similar applications, but also gift applications to my friends!

4. It’s cool, but is it happening?
Yes, the ISMP is very attractive and has great feature,
but does it have a viable commercial application? Doing
bit of research, I found Tatung Infocomm, a WiMAX
operator in Taiwan who had launched an application store
in conjunction with the World Games 2009 in Kaohsiung.
The man behind the scenes....
I also had a chance to have a short chat with Kelvin
Lee, Senior General Manager , Green Packet Bhd and
the inspiration behind ISMP (He was also one of the
speakers at the conference). “ISMP is the result of
rigorous R&D to produce a platform that simplifies an Operator’s entry into this arena. It is cleverly designed to
leverage on an Operator’s existing resources such as Billing and CRM systems, enabling the launch of an application
store in a very short period of time,” said Lee. “It works with multiple end-user devices and operating systems so
that Operators can reach out to all subscribers.”
A funky, easy to navigate and informative interface with a clean and clutter
free back end and a colorful and well organised front-end with a viable com-
mercial application make ISMP an ideal apps store for the established as
well as the aspiring developers, making it easier for them to develop and
market their applications to operators and subscribers..
ISMP lives up to all its hype and surpasses all expectations!
Welcome to a new generation of Appstores!
