2. In this first section of Romans, Paul has
discussed:
SIN: Righteousness Needed (1:18-3:20)
SALVATION: Righteousness Declared (3:21-5:21)
And now, he discusses:
SANCTIFICATION: Righteousness Imparted
(6:1 – 8:39)
3. FOUR MAIN VIEWS ON SIN
Pelagian View of sin: Man is created neutral (not sinful or holy).
Everyone is born in the same condition as Adam and no sin is
transmitted.
Augustinian View of sin: Man is totally depraved. Adam’s sin is
FEDERALLY transmitted to man.
Semi-Pelagian View of sin: Man retains some measure of freedom
not to sin. Man can cooperate with God’s grace to effect salvation.
Arminian View of sin: Adam was created in innocence (not holiness).
Sin is an act of the will (not a natural condition). We inherit
pollution from Adam’s sin, but not guilt or a sinful nature. Man is
not totally depraved and he can conform to God’s will and even help
effect regeneration.
4. I. STEPS TO SANCTIFICATION (6:1-23)
Here, Paul uses two key words of contrast –
- Live
- Die
5. QUESTIONS:
Can a Christian live in sin?
Can a Christian live without it?
Paul helps us answer these questions in Chapter 6.
6. I. STEPS TO SANCTIFICATION (6:1-23)

A. By KNOWING CERTAIN TRUTHS (6:1-10)
7. QUESTION:
With what baptism is Paul
identifying?

8. I. STEPS TO SANCTIFICATION (6:1-23)
