This is a presentation I used when doing a training session on goal setting for my Leadership Team. The content is adapted from a presentation I found on SHRM's website. The Pinto picture seems out of place, but I used it to spring board into a story showing how goal setting went "bad" at Ford with the design and production of the Pinto.

  12. 12. Action-oriented Objectives <ul><li>Action-oriented objectives can be accomplished </li></ul><ul><li>Name some action-oriented words </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Create, Implement, Build, Increase, Determine </li></ul></ul>

Realistic Objectives cont’d. <ul><li>When setting objectives that are realistic, ask: </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Do I have the necessary resources? </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Do I need to rearrange my priorities to accomplish this? </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Is it possible to complete this objective? </li></ul></ul>
  15. 15. Time bound Objectives <ul><li>Time bound objectives have deadlines for completion. </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Deadlines, just as with overall objectives, must be realistic. </li></ul></ul><ul><li>For a complex objective, break into smaller parts with a completion date for each part. </li></ul>
  16. 16. <ul><li>When setting objectives that are time bound, ask: </li></ul><ul><ul><li>What is the most realistic date for this objective to be completed without cutting corners? </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><ul><li>set deadlines only after analyzing the scope of the goal or objective </li></ul></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Have I included this date in the statement of the objective? </li></ul></ul>Time bound Objectives cont’d.

Summary <ul><li>Although the terms “goals” and “objectives” are often used interchangeably, there are significant differences: </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Goals are general, intangible, broad, abstract, and long-range directions </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Objectives are specific, measurable, narrow, concrete, and are short-range plans that support goals. </li></ul></ul>
