Which Projector is right for you?
Which Multimedia Projector is right for you?
Company-in-Confidence 2
There are a huge variety of projectors to choose from in the market today.
What is important?
is to select the projector that is right for you. When comparing projectors, keep
in mind the
features that are more important to you. Sometimes a trade off becomes
necessary and
making a list of features in order of priority would be a good idea. Only you
can decide which
projector is best for you.
The first trade-off you'll confront is between cost and performance. Tell your
vendor up-front
whether price is an issue. That way he can steer you toward lower-priced
projectors. But don't
expect cutting edge performance - as with all things electronic, performance
comes at a
premium. Of course, if price isn't an issue, there are plenty of
high-performance projectors to
choose from.
For any projector to make an impact (that's what you're buying one for -
Right??), great image
quality is a prerequisite. Image quality could be subdivided into - Brightness,
Contrast,
Brightness uniformity and Colour reproduction
a. Brightness
The brightness you need depends on the screen size and the kind of
environment you usually
project in. Projecting on a large screen or in a brightly lit room requires high
brightness
projectors.
Generally speaking -
450-650 ANSI lumen can be seen in a dimly lit room
700-1000 ANSI lumens can be seen clearly in a partially lit room.
Above 1000 ANSI lumens are preferable in a room with all the lights on.
When you're comparing brightness, you should know that not all
manufacturers measure
brightness in the same way. At times you may find projectors with ANSI
brightness of 1100
Lumens & peak brightness of 1500 Lumens. The peak brightness is an
incorrect way of
comparing the brightness.
In a recent study conducted for 35 projector models, it was found that the
ANSI Lumen
measurements tended to average 20% to 25% below the official rating for the
product, with a
few products measuring 35% or more below their official ratings. In this study
only one
product - an Epson projector - measured higher than its official rating.
Hence to choose, it is always more accurate to set the projectors side by side
(projecting
similar images at the same size and onto identical screens) and have a look
for yourself.
Finally, screen materials make a difference in how bright the image appears.
Avoid projecting
on reflective surfaces. For all projection systems it is essential to avoid having
direct light
falling on the area of the screen.
b. Contrast
Contrast ratio is the ratio between the brightest part of the projected image
and the darkest. It
contributes to the depth of an image, and is especially important for projecting
video images.
Again, not all manufacturers measure contrast in the same way. At times you
may find
projectors with ANSI contrast of 300 : 1 & a consequent full on/full off contrast
of 800 : 1. The
full on/full off contrast is an incorrect way of comparing the contrast. Again a
side-by-side
comparison is the best way of making out the difference.
1. Price
2. Image quality
Which Multimedia Projector is right for you?
Company-in-Confidence 3
c. Brightness uniformity
You want your projected image to look good all over, and that is where
brightness uniformity
becomes important. As you compare projectors, notice whether the
illumination is even from
corner to corner and edge to edge of the screen, or if it's brighter in the centre
and darker in
the corners.
A brightness uniformity of over 85% is desirable.
d. Colour reproduction
LCD projectors use three transmissive LCD panels to project an image; DLP
projectors use
one or three Digital Micromirror Device (DMD) chips. The more panels or
chips, the better the
image, especially when it comes to colour saturation. Colours in three-panel or
three-chip
projectors are much brighter and truer than those from one-chip projectors,
because they
colourise images with dichroic mirrors and RGB colour filters instead of
rotating colour
wheels.
Colour reproduction can best be judged by a simultaneous comparison of the
projector’s
images. Some projectors just do a better job of displaying colours than others.
This could be measured in the following categories.
1. Ultra-Portable Projectors - 3.5 kgs and lower
2. Portable or Conference Room Projectors - between 3.5 to 4.5 kgs
3. Fixed Installation Projectors -Weight > 4.5 kgs
Newer generation, ultra-portable projectors project images at upto 1200 ANSI
lumens. The
conference room projectors feature higher brightness levels - 1200 to 2000
ANSI lumens.
Fixed Installation Projectors on the other hand are generally 2,000 lumens and
higher.
The types of available projector lamps are:
   Halogen lamps - 400W
   Metal halide lamps - 270W
UHP (Ultra High Pressure) or UHE (Ultra High Efficiency) lamps - 120 -
250W
The latest series of projector’s use UHP / UHE lamps with inert-gas discharge
technology.
Typically UHP / UHE lamps have a life of 1000 - 2000 hours. (ie. the duration
for its
brightness to reduce by 10%).
A few manufacturers still mention the full life of the lamp (typically the time
taken for the lamp
to die completely) or lamp life using eco-mode (life of lamp by using it at 75%
of its strength).
The right way to evaluate the lamp life is to consider the duration for its
brightness to reduce
by 10%.
The easier your projector is to use, the less of your time and concentration it
will require.
Comparing ease of use is not difficult. Just look for these characteristics
3. Portability
4. Lamp / Lamp Life
5. Ease of use

Company-in-Confidence 4
a. Remote Control
A remote control offers the most convenient way to run your projector while
making a
presentation because it allows you to make image adjustments and control
projector functions
from anywhere in the room without having to touch the projector.
Another feature that is helpful is remote mouse control. Make sure the remote
enables full,
fluid motion of the mouse at all points on the screen.
Some projectors offer presentation tools built into the remote. These could be
software driven
(which means you have to load the software on your laptop), or could be a part
of the
projectors firmware.
Ideally, the projector you choose will offer a remote that combines all these
functions
b. The input panel
Input panels can be intimidating. Look for a well-labeled panel. Also think
about how many
connections you really need. You probably need a computer connection,
audio, video and Svideo
inputs. Try to get only what you need because additional inputs only make the
projector
larger, and if you won't use them, that's a waste of space.
Are all the cables you need provided with the projector you are considering?
Some projectors include a quot;loop-throughquot; feature that allows you to connect a
separate,
external desktop monitor to your projector (not required if you are using a
laptop for your
presentations). This is a handy feature that allows you to view what you are
projecting without
having to turn your back to the audience.
Having a projector that's compatible with your input sources is critical. Hence
the TRUE
RESOLUTION of the projector is an important issue. While selecting a
projector, you need to
know your image resolution requirements. Check the current resolution of your
display
monitor by looking at the quot;display settingsquot; of your computer.
Common resolutions are
640 x 480 (VGA), 800 x 600 (SVGA), 1024 x 768 (XGA) and 1280 x 1024
(SXGA).
You may want to think ahead about what your next computer will be and
determine if the
planned projector will handle your new computer's display resolution. Most
new computers
today are 1024x768 (XGA) display resolution. Laptops are 800x600 (SVGA) or
1024x768
(XGA). Some higher performance computers are using 1280x1024 (SXGA)
resolution.
For most applications 800 x 600 is usually sufficient, but if you find yourself
using higher
resolution computers, look for a projector whose true resolution matches that
of your
computer.
Projectors today will handle their native resolution and usually also resize the
next higher
level resolution. This feature is helpful if you upgrade your computers or use
the projector with
6. Cables

a new laptop. Lookout for projectors that are compatible to two resolutions
higher than its true
resolution
An important part of selecting a system is to know what kind of service you
can expect from
the vendor should anything go wrong. Find out how long it will take to get the
unit back if
repairs are necessary and if a standby would be provided. Is the vendor an
authorised service
centre of the projector manufacturer? Does the vendor carry spares and
trained, technical
people?
Ideally, have someone from your office visit the vendor’s office or service
centre to have a first
hand feel of the quality of service that you would receive.
Check your projector for Panel-on-Prism. This eliminates the high risk of pixel
misalignment
after a couple of years of use (found in traditional LCD based projectors).
Projectors that use
Panel-on-Prism never encounters such problems since the LCD panels are
fixed directly on
the prism, thus eliminating any potential panel movement.
Check if the projector has digital keystone correction. Keystone correction lets
you square up
The image and eliminate the trapezoidal shape when you are projecting at an
angle.
Remember that all digital keystone adjustments require a rescaling of the
image. Hence it is a
great feature for PowerPoint presentations that consist of pie charts and
bulleted items and
also for graphics or photographs where rescaling has little effect on overall
image clarity.
However, it significantly fuzzes detailed data such as financial reports on an

Remember that all digital keystone adjustments require a rescaling of the image. Hence it is a great feature for PowerPoint presentations that consist of pie charts and bulleted items and also for graphics or photographs where rescaling has little effect on overall image clarity.
