Some of the Changes Introduced Raising the minimum school leavers age to 18 years by 2015 Introducing new Functional skills standards and qualifications in ICT as well as English and maths Gives young people life & social skills to better prepare them for a fast changing environment expanding Apprenticeship opportunities  introducing a new suite of qualifications, Diplomas in 17 subject area at three levels by 2013  reviewing and updating GCSE’s  Helping  learners below level 2 and 1 through the foundation learning tier The new ‘reform’ aims to help all young people to meet their own personal targets as a learner and achieve in a way that reflects their individuality Implications of teaching and learning of the changes to the 14-19 curriculum 3
The various learning routes students can take This enables all learners  to undertake the curriculum in a way that best suits their needs.  Apprenticeships – with an entitlement to a place by 2013 for all 16 year olds suitably qualified  Foundation Learning – with some delivery on a 14-19 basis in all local areas from 2010 and increasing provision from 2010 to align with the 2013 Diploma entitlement and RPA target  General Qualifications, e.g. GCSEs and A levels  Diplomas – with an entitlement by 2013 for all 14–16 year olds to the first 14 Diplomas and for 16–18 years to all 17 Diplomas  4 Implications of teaching and learning of the changes to the 14-19 curriculum

PLTS This links directly to the new embedding of PLTS- personal, learning and thinking skills.  The various routes that students are now able to take to reach a qualification in the ICT area enables all thinkers and learners to access the skills they need.  PLTS is also across the curriculum and this will aid ICT as other subjects will also use ICT as a tool for students being able to meet their own personal, learning and thinking skills.  6 Implications of teaching and learning of the changes to the 14-19 curriculum
So… What are the implications of the changes for learners? The changes to the 14-19 curriculum highlight that all learning styles should be catered for in the way that best suit the need of the learner.  The introduction of PLTS in ICT and other subjects will aid all young people to access the curriculum in the way that suits them. This will have positive implications as it will help young people to view ICT as a functional skill that they are able to appreciate the long term value  Better chances of employment for school leavers  due to skills learnt More variety for young people in terms of courses and opportunities (careers) on offer to them  Opportunity for the less academic students to achieve  a national recognised qualification, and skills needed for employment 7 Implications of teaching and learning of the changes to the 14-19 curriculum
Implications for teachers Further training for new courses and teaching strategies under the new curriculum, requiring ongoing learning and research Greater range of study programmes requiring effective time management Greater diversity providing a higher level of job satisfaction Opportunity to understand, help and guide all students from all age groups , tailoring to each individuals needs Implications of teaching and learning of the changes to the 14-19 curriculum 8

  • 4. The various learning routes students can take This enables all learners to undertake the curriculum in a way that best suits their needs.   • 6. PLTS This links directly to the new embedding of PLTS- personal, learning and thinking skills. The various routes that students are now able to take to reach a qualification in the ICT area enables all thinkers and learners to access the skills they need. PLTS is also across the curriculum and this will aid ICT as other subjects will also use ICT as a tool for students being able to meet their own personal, learning and thinking skills. 6 Implications of teaching and learning of the changes to the 14-19 curriculum
  • 7. So… What are the implications of the changes for learners? The changes to the 14-19 curriculum highlight that all learning styles should be catered for in the way that best suit the need of the learner. The introduction of PLTS in ICT and other subjects will aid all young people to access the curriculum in the way that suits them. This will have positive implications as it will help young people to view ICT as a functional skill that they are able to appreciate the long term value Better chances of employment for school leavers due to skills learnt More variety for young people in terms of courses and opportunities (careers) on offer to them Opportunity for the less academic students to achieve a national recognised qualification, and skills needed for employment 7 Implications of teaching and learning of the changes to the 14-19 curriculum
