While old Paris was disappearing under Baron Haussmann's influence, artists including Manet, Degas, Monet, Renoir, and Cezanne were enthralled by the city and its lively atmosphere. They painted scenes of different social classes, including barmaids, boaters, prostitutes, and picnicing bourgeois. However, these same artists also felt a strong pull towards more natural subjects outside Paris, seeking an escape from the city. The transformations in Paris profoundly changed inhabitants' lifestyles, providing artists with themes to depict everyday life.

Seurat, Monet and Renoir, Caillebotte, Pissarro and Gauguin, Cezanne and others were enthralled by the city
and its frenetic life.
New motifs presented themselves, and the artists painted the many different layers of society:
they bar-maids, boaters, prostitutes, sightseers, or petits bourgeois lunching on the grass ...
However, there was also the insistent call of the natural world, the urgent desire to escape from the city
and these same artists turned towards more "natural" subjects, to areas just outside Paris.

autant de thèmes aux artistes à la recherche de cette "beauté mystérieuse" et involontaire déposée par la vie
des hommes ...
Cependant, l'appel de la nature, le désir de fuir la cité, se manifestent aussi impérieusement et ce sont les
mêmes artistes qui se tournent vers les motifs plus "naturels", des environs de Paris.
