2. “Necessity is the mother of invention,”
Quote by the Ancient Greek
Philosopher Plato.
This Quote will be our theme
through the Industrial
Revolution.
What does this quote mean?
3. Then Industrial Revolution
Let’s break this down between the two
words:
Industry- being involved in business
activity.
Revolution- A major change or
changing event.
So….the Industrial Revolution was: a
major change in types of business and
activities of businesses.
4. Changes in Business
The “business” of humans has shifted 3
major times throughout history.
Our first business- Hunting and gathering
for food (Pre-Civilization).
Our second business- Farming (the
beginning of cities and civilization).
Our third business- Industry in 1815
(factories, cities, machines, mass
production)

7. The Goals of the Industrial Rev.
Make more products for less money at a faster
pace.
Use cheap labor (pay workers less) and raise prices
to make more money.
Use more technology and more workers to make
products faster.
Gain a monopoly over an industry and control
prices.
What problems do you see with these goals?
8. Thinking of Thomas Jefferson
Thomas Jefferson-3rd United States President, saw
the Industrial Revolution coming from Britain.
Jefferson was opposed to idea of Industrialization.
Believed that moving from an agricultural economy
to a business/industry economy would MORALLY
destroy society.
Why did Jefferson believe this?
Do you agree with him?
9. Pros and Cons List
On your notes, create a chart listing the good
and bad effects: moving from a farm based
economy to an industrial based economy and
the impacts it had on society.
Things to think about: What kind of society
do we have in St. Louis?
How is society different in areas that focus on
farming, rather than industry?
10. Final Task
After looking at your pros and cons
chart, write a paragraph that explains
whether you do or do not agree with
Jefferson’s idea. What good/bad things
do you think came from the shift of
farm based economy to an industry
based economy?
