1. Before I started to make my certain film trailer I have done some research on the genre I have
chosen which is ‘crime’. The research I have done is very helpful towards the film trailer I will be
making this also helped me understand the codes and conventions of an crime film trailer, which
will later on be useful to my own movie trailer. To find what was relevant or not I used conventions
of a crime trailer and then compared it with another genre which was action. All the research I have
done will help me in some way to create my own unique film trailer.
My main research method for my finding is secondary data as I have used the internet for my
research sources. The internet is a very reliable source the gather the information from and it can
also be done very quickly. That is one of the main reasons I have used the internet over going to the
library and gathering information. Furthermore I will be doing some primary research as I have
made a questionnaire to ask people my age group what they like/think about movie trailers and ETC.
My research has all been posted on an online blog, which will allow me to look it up whenever I
need to look up a bit of research which it can help me. Throughout my research I have learnt that
further down the line you will need some research information to help me with my crime trailer.
Firstly, the genre I have chosen is Crime, the locations shown in crime trailers for my specific sub-genre
are kind of everywhere depends what kind of crime movie it will be if it is a fighting type of
crime movies the location will tend to be more towards dark and gloomy places or a ghetto city or
area they can sometimes tend to be shooting scenes. Crime trailers have different types of locations
mostly it will include driving, shooting and fighting. This is because this stuff of activities in the
movies brings the tension and that’s what makes it a unique crime movie. The locations I have said
have been a main factor of crime movies in the past years.
Secondly, after spending a considerably amount of time watching crime movies trailers I have found
out that the majority of the crime trailers tend to have something down the line of Going after
someone that hurt their family or friend or could be looking for a family member, in this case the
movie “taken (1 or2)” the narrative is that they are living happy after one of the family member (the
daughter) get taken by some drug line and the father gets her back from the villains. In action movie
trailers the rhythm will mostly be a group of people or a single person having fun then the whole
topic will change to a fast paced music and shooting or fighting scenes will be shown or even
someone running or driving vehicle . In trailers they do not do it in chronological order because that
will ruin the movie for the audience, trailers always do it in different clips from the movie not to
ruin the movie for the audience or the backstory about the trailer. They will normally end the trailer
in a dramatic way to grab the audience’s attention to go and watch the movie when it comes out.
Thirdly, the age rating on crime movies tend to be from 12+ or in some cases 15+. Therefor the
target audience is aimed at anyone from the ages above 12+ as crime movies are enjoyable for
everyone above the age of 12 years, crime movies are aimed at both types of gender but in some
cases the movie could be aimed at the male gender as it could be more of a men’s type of movie
which includes violence, guns, shooting. Because social media is a very big part of this society
nowadays and crime movies are mostly aimed at young adults they are most likely to hear about
them on the internet e.g. YouTube, twitter or even Facebook and ETC. With the social media sites
people can discuss the trailer the most common one people use to interact with people is Facebook
fan pages were people express their feelings about the movie. Another way people can express their
view on the movie trailer could be on the YouTube comments; the comments people say are mostly
their opinions on what they could fix or add to the movie or to make it better.
2. Music and sound is a very important aspect in movie trailers, music and sound is a key factor in
comedy and romance trailers but they are still useful in crime trailers. The music sets the mood of
films and can make the audience’s tension build whilst it is a nail biting moment. The music tends
to go along what is going on in the trailer e.g. if it is a car chase the music will be fast paced or if it
is a scene where people are just sitting around drinking talking the music will be slow and you will
not tend to hear the music as much in the trailers which will show the audiences the happy normal
life they live in.
