RESEARCH
PROBLEM
DR. HAYAT AL AKOUM
DEFINING THE RESEARCH PROBLEM
A research problem refers to some difficulty which the researcher
experiences in the context of either a theoretical or practical situation and
wants to obtain a solution for the same. a research problem exists if the
following conditions are met:
• there must be an individual or a group which has some difficulty or the
problem.
• there must be some objective(s) to be attained.
• there must be alternative means or courses of action for obtaining the
objective(s) one wishes to attain.
• there must be some doubt in the mind of a researcher with regard to the
selection of alternatives.
• there must be some environment(s) to which the difficulty pertains.
SELECTING THE PROBLEM
The following points must be observed by a researcher in selecting a research problem
or a subject of study:
• Subject which is overdone should not be normally chosen, for it will be a difficult task to
throw any new light in such a case.
• Controversial subject should not become the choice of an average researcher.
• Too narrow or too vague problems should be avoided.
• The subject selected for research should be familiar and feasible so that the related
research material or sources of research are within one’s reach.
• The importance of the subject, the qualifications and the training of a researcher, the
costs involved and the time factor must be considered.
• The selection of a study must be preceded by a preliminary study.
DEFINING THE PROBLEM
It involves the task of laying down boundaries within which a researcher shall study
the problem with a predetermined objective in view. the following steps can be
followed:
• Statement of the problem in a general way
• Understanding the nature of the problem: understand the origin and nature of
the problem e.g. by discussing it with those who raised it in order to find out how
the problem originally came about. the researcher should keep in view the
environment within which the problem is to be studied and understood.
• Surveying the available literature: the researcher must be well conversant with
relevant theories in the field, reports and records as also all other relevant
literature.
• Developing ideas through discussions.
• Rephrasing the research problem: its putting the research problem in as
specific terms as possible so that it may become operationally viable and may
help in the development of working hypotheses.
DEFINING THE PROBLEM
The following should also be observed when defining a research problem:
• Technical terms and words or phrases with special meanings used in the
statement of the problem, should be clearly defined.
• Basic assumptions or postulates if any relating to the research problem
should be clearly stated.
• A straight forward statement of the value of the investigation should be
provided.
• The suitability of the time-period and the sources of data available must
also be considered by the researcher in defining the problem.
• The scope of the investigation or the limits within which the problem is to
be studied must be mentioned explicitly in defining a research problem.
DEFINING THE PROBLEM
Ways of identifying a specific research problem from the
broad area.
• Existing theories
• Existing literature
• Discussions with experts
• Previous research studies
• Replication
• The media
• Personal experiences.
SOURCES OF RESEARCH PROBLEMS IN NURSING
SCIENCES
The major sources for nursing research problems include:
• Nursing practice, for example, what is the impact of discharge
planning on the cost and quality of patient care?
• Nursing education, for example, study students' learning styles
and abilities, the effectiveness of various teaching methodologies
in the classroom and clinical setting and various methods of
evaluation.
• Nursing administration, for example, Staffing patterns,
effectiveness of various methods of delivering nursing care, and
personnel satisfaction and turnover.
SOURCES OF RESEARCH PROBLEMS IN NURSING
SCIENCES
• Societal trends, for example,
(1) the different types of nursing education,
(2) the development and implementation of the nurse practitioner
role and the clinical nurse specialist role,
(3) the use of the computer in providing nursing care, and
(4) the increasing focus on prevention of illness and promotion of
health.
• Researcher and peer interaction, for example, nursing educators
assist students as they select their research problems.
SOURCES OF RESEARCH PROBLEMS IN NURSING
SCIENCES
• Literature review, nursing journals such as nursing outlook,
American journal of nursing and topics in clinical nursing contain
research ideas, but frequently these ideas are implied.
• Theory and one's personal conceptual framework, a research
problem could be formulated to explore or describe a concept in
a theory, such as a study to explore the concept of self-care in
Orem's theory.
CONSIDERATIONS IN SELECTING A RESEARCH
PROBLEM
These help to ensure that your study will remain manageable and
that you will remain motivated.
1. Interest: a research endeavor is usually time consuming, and
involves hard work and possibly unforeseen problems. One should
select topic of great interest to sustain the required motivation.
2. Magnitude: it is extremely important to select a topic that you
can manage Within the time and resources at your disposal.
Narrow the topic down to something mangeable, specific and clear.
3. Measurement of concepts: make sure that you are clear about
the Indicators and measurement of concepts (if used) in your study.
CONSIDERATIONS IN SELECTING A RESEARCH
PROBLEM
4. Level of expertise: make sure that you have adequate level of
expertise for the task you are proposing since you need to do the
work yourself.
5. Relevance: ensure that your study adds to the existing body of
knowledge, bridges current gaps and is useful in policy formulation.
This will help you to sustain interest in the study.
6. Availability of data: before finalizing the topic, make sure that
data are available.
7. Ethical issues: how ethical issues can affect the study
population and how ethical problems can be overcome should be
thoroughly examined at the problem formulating stage.
STATING THE PROBLEM
• A research study starts with a brief introductory
section. the researcher introduces briefly the general
area of study, and then narrows down to the specific
problem to be studied.
CHARACTERISTICS OF A GOOD PROBLEM
STATEMENT
• It should be written clearly and in such a way that the reader’s
interest is captured immediately.
• The specific problem identified in the problem statement should
be objectively researchable
• The scope of the specific research problem should be indicated
• The importance of the study in adding new knowledge should be
stated clearly
• The problem statement must give the purpose of the research.
