BUILDING A SCALABLE E-COMMERCE SYSTEM
Studies suggest that 48 percent of all retail sales are
either online or web-influenced.
The number of touch points has increased and include
the following: Web, In-store, Catalog, Mobile, email, SM
and contact centre
The platforms that underlie the sales and business eco-
systems have to match the increase in e-commerce
activity. The questions is do they?
INTRODUCTION
Scalability is defined as the ability of the system to
increase the number of concurrent users that it can
handle.
There are two types of scalabilities
Vertical: Here physical resources are increased in a
system such as CPU or memory.
Horizontal: Aims to enhance throughput by adding
more resources such as physical servers, for a
database.
SCALABILITY
• De-couple: Differentiate between synchronous and asynchronous call
so as to not burden the system, and risk failure.
• Caching: Ensure that first-level caching is done on the server; basically
plan your levels of caching right up to master databases
• Ensure muti-level monitoring: This will ensure high availability and fast
response times
• Host on the cloud: This helps hugely, and the team can focus on the
future and not be bogged done in hardware/infrastructure issues.
• Software: Use java and Open source – Linux, My SQL, Spring etc are
widely used.
BEST PRACTICES IN SCALABILITY
Given that the e-commerce platforms are headed for
significant growth, a few issues should be kept in mind
• Ensure that the E-commerce application is scalable from
design and inception
• Ensure load testing, APM tool implementation and
analysis of projected/peak volumes to stabilise the
application from a scalability point of view
CONCLUSION
