  6. 6. “e higher your blood cholesterol level the greater the risk for developing heart disease or having a heart attack”. HEALTHCARESCREENING Full Cholesterol (Lipid) Profile 4 WHY MEASURING CHOLESTEROL IS IMPORTANT? Cholesterol is vital for normal body function but high cholesterol levels increase the risk of coronary heart disease and disease of the arteries. • Heart disease is the number one killer of women and men in Ireland with 22% of premature deaths (under age 65) caused by cardiovascular disease. • The higher your blood cholesterol level, the greater your risks for developing heart disease or having a heart attack. To help gauge your cardiovascular health you need to establish your cholesterol levels as this can be a good indicator, this cannot be taken in isolation as other factors need to be taken into account.

The process involves either a painless finger prick or a sample being taken from your vein. The sample is then processed by our state of the art Biochemistry analyser which produces a full cholesterol profile. Depending on your results the screening nurse will provide either lifestyle advice on how to reduce your cholesterol level or a referral to your GP may be recommended for further investigation.
  8. 8. WHAT IS DIABETES? Diabetes is a condition caused by a lack of, or insufficiency of insulin. Insulin is a hormone, a substance of importance that is made by the pancreas. Diabetes is a serious condition and within Ireland there are an estimated 30,000 people living with undetected Diabetes. There are two main types of Diabetes; • Type 1 Diabetes normally occurs in childhood or early adult life, and requires treatment with insulin injections. It is caused by the body’s own immune system destroying the insulin-making cells (beta-cells) of the pancreas. • Type 2 Diabetes usually develops slowly in adulthood. It is progressive and can sometimes be treated with diet and exercise, but more often Type 2 diabetes may require anti-diabetic medicine and/or insulin injections. In Ireland there are over 30,000 people living with undetected Diabetes. HEALTHCARESCREENING Diabetes Tests 6

CHOLESTEROLDIABETES LUNGFUNCTION/ BLOODPRESSURE CARDIAC SCREENING VISIONTESTS CELIACDISEASE/ OSTEOPOROSIS OTHERTESTS 7 Depending on your results our nurse will provide either lifestyle advice or a referral to your GP if required.HEALTHCARESCREENING SYMPTOMS OF DIABETES The main symptoms of diabetes include; • Significantly increased thirst, • Needing to urinate more often than usual • Increased hunger • Constant tiredness WHAT DOES THE TEST INVOLVE? The test for diabetes involves a small painless finger prick or a sample being taken from your vein; the sample is then processed by our state of the art Biochemistry analyser which will measure your glucose level, we will also analyse your sample on our HbA1c analyser which will give you the average level of glucose in your red blood cells over a 120 day period.
  10. 10. Lung problems can arise from a number of areas such as; • Cigarette smoking • Working environment • Genetic disorders • Exposure to certain chemicals. WHAT DOES THE TEST INVOLVE? To perform Spirometry test a person provides an exhalation into a filtered mouthpiece which is then measured by a Spirometer giving an indication of lung health. The Spirometry test enables the nurse to detect symptoms of Respiratory Disease before they become apparent. The results of the tests are given in certain values, which the nurse will explain. “Respiratory Disease is the most common reason to visit the G.P. Over a fih of people will visit their G.P at least once a year because of a respiratory condition”. HEALTHCARESCREENING Lung Function (Spirometry) test 8
  11. 11. CHOLESTEROLDIABETES LUNGFUNCTION/ BLOODPRESSURE CARDIAC SCREENING VISIONTESTS CELIACDISEASE/ OSTEOPOROSIS OTHERTESTS HEALTHCARESCREENING Blood Pressure 9 “In the 18 – 44 age bracket more than 67,000 adults in Ireland have been diagnosed with High blood pressure, this number increases to 950,000 amongst adults over the age of 45 with 600,000 remaining undiagnosed”. WHAT IS BLOOD PRESSURE? Blood Pressure relates to blood moving around the body and as it moves it pushes against the sides of the blood vessels. The strength of this pushing is your blood pressure. WHY IS YOUR BLOOD PRESSURE IMPORTANT? High Blood Pressure, or hypertension, is the single most common contributor to cardiovascular death, stroke, heart attacks, heart failure and end stage kidney disease. Low Blood Pressure or hypotension is when blood pressure drops too low, it can restrict the amount of blood flowing to your brain and other vital organs, which can cause fainting or dizziness and light headedness. This table below shows the classification of blood pressure for adults who are 18 years and older. WHAT DOES THE TEST INVOLVE? Having your blood pressure tested is quick and easy. The screening nurse will use a cuff that fits around your upper arm and is inflated so that it becomes tight. Blood Pressure Category Systolic, mmHg Diastolic, mmHg Hypotension < 90 < 60 Desired 90–119 60–79 Prehypertension 120–139 80–89 Stage 1 Hypertension 140–159 90–99 Stage 2 Hypertension 160–179 100–109 Hypertensive Crisis ≥ 180 ≥ 110
  12. 12. WHAT IS CARDIAC SCREENING? ECG Heart Screening measures the electrical activity within the heart that causes your heart to beat. During the test, a number of electrodes are connected to your arms, legs and chest and these pick up the electrical activity within the heart. An ECG can show a number of Heart Conditions including: • A previous Myocardial Infarction (Heart Attack) • An Enlarged Heart that is working under strain • Fast, slow or irregular heartbeats (Arrhythmias) WHO SHOULD BE SCREENED? As the instance of Sudden Adult Death Syndrome (SADS) has become more common among males and females from 15 years of age upwards, especially individuals who engage in sporting activities should have a cardiac screen. It is also important as approaching and during middle age that individuals undertake a comprehensive health screen which would include cardiac tests to screen for Coronary Heart Disease (CHD). Screening may include but is not limited to an Electrocardiogram (ECG), Blood Pressure Measurement, Body Mass Index (BMI), Lung Function (Spirometry) and relevant Blood Tests such as Blood Cholesterol. WHAT DOES THE TEST INVOLVE? Electrodes will be attached to your chest, arms and legs. These are then connected to the ECG instrument. After tests have been carried out, your results will be reviewed and reported on by our Consultant Cardiologist. Any cardiac tests carried out within our health screening programmes will be subject to review by our Consultant Cardiologist. HEALTHCARESCREENING 10 Cardiac Screening

CHOLESTEROLDIABETES LUNGFUNCTION/ BLOODPRESSURE CARDIAC SCREENING VISIONTESTS CELIACDISEASE/ OSTEOPOROSIS OTHERTESTS 13 AGE RELATED MACULAR DEGENERATION VISION TESTS Age Related Macular Degeneration is the leading cause of irreversible blindness in people over the age of 50. Age Related Macular Degeneration as the name suggests occurs with increasing age, and results in the degeneration of the macula. Central vision is normally unaffected in the early stages. Loss of central vision occurs with late AMD. Age Related Macular Degeneration is due to free radicals within the eye. Free radicals are unstable substances produced in response to our use of oxygen and blue light entering the eye. As we all breathe in oxygen and are exposed to blue light AMD is practically unavoidable. “The condition is worsened by smoking, being overweight having high cholesterol, high blood pressure and a poor diet”. Normal Vision WHAT DOES THE TEST INVOLVE? The test provides a fast, reliable reading in less than one minute per eye. The patient looks into the instrument and a series of flickering lights will appear and when identified the patient confirms by clicking on an identification switch. “Macular Degeneration is the leading cause of sight loss in Ireland with over 7,000 people diagnosed every year”.HEALTHCARESCREENING Vision Tests Macular Degeneration Vision affected by Macular Degeneration
  16. 16. RADIUS TIBIA METATARSAL “In Ireland over 300,000 people suffer from Osteoporosis. 20% of men and 50% of women over the age of 50 will have a fracture as a result of Osteoporosis”. HEALTHCARESCREENING Osteoporosis WHAT IS OSTEOPOROSIS? Osteoporosis is a disease characterised by low bone mass and deterioration of bone tissue which leads to increased risk of fractures. RISK FACTORS: • Sedentary Lifestyle • Smoking • Excessive Alcohol intake • Low calcium intake • Gender • Family history • Age WHAT DOES THE TEST INVOLVE? The scan is radiation free and totally painless. Gel will be placed on your Radius, Phalanx, Tibia and Metatarsal bones, a scanning instrument will then be used to scan for Osteoporosis The Osteoporosis scan takes into account age, gender, ethnicity and is performed in minutes. The Osteoporosis test will be carried out by our fully trained registered nurse and results will form part of your comprehensive health report. 14 NORMAL OSTEOPOROSIS PHALANX
  17. 17. CHOLESTEROLDIABETES LUNGFUNCTION/ BLOODPRESSURE CARDIAC SCREENING VISIONTESTS CELIACDISEASE/ OSTEOPOROSIS OTHERTESTS “It is estimated that there are up to 45,000 people undiagnosed with Coeliac Disease in Ireland”.HEALTHCARESCREENING Coeliac Disease WHAT IS COELIAC DISEASE? Coeliac disease (CD) is a serious, lifelong, gastrointestinal disorder that can cause a wide spectrum of clinical symptoms such as; • Diarrhoea • Abdominal Cramps • Weight Loss • Malnutrition • Skin Disorders This is caused by a permanent intolerance to gluten, a complex mixture of storage proteins found in wheat, barley and rye. WHAT DOES THE TEST INVOLVE? The Coeliac test involves a painless finger prick from which the blood sample is taken; the sample is then analysed and a result is available five minutes after collection. If the test is positive for anti-tTG IgA antibodies the detection of these antibodies indicates with a high probability an existing celiac disease is present. Depending on your results the health screening nurse may refer you to your GP. 15
  18. 18. CONFIDENTIAL EMPLOYEE REPORT At the end of the Health Screening process individuals will be provided with a comprehensive personal health report which will include results from your health screen and an overview of your general health.
