Prelab 1. In this lab, you will be working with mercuric chloride (HgCl2), and potassium thiocyanate (KSCN). Research the safety information relating to handling and disposal of these compounds and summarize your findings. 2. Imagine the value of x in Table 1 is found to be 0.00024. Calculate the value of Ke you would obtain if this were the case using an ICE table. 3. When comparing a test tube in Part 1 to the control tube, you can see no difference between the two in their color. What would you conclude from this result? What would you conclude if the test tube was significantly darker in color than the control tube?
Solution
1 .both HgCl2 and KSCN are toxic substances so proper handling of these is must .HgCl2 is volatile and can be enter into body by inhalation so always work with close apparatus while working with HgCl2 . mercury can cause damage in mucous membrane, headache and respiratory problems .
On the other hand cyanide(CN)is most dangerous venum although thiocyanide(SCAN) is little less toxic but still it is very toxic and it attacks on the nervous system .
So the handling of these compounds should be done carefully and should work with mask and glooves and disposal should be proper.
