3. FOREWORD
The "Handbook of Statistics on the Indian Securities Market 2008" published
by the Securities and Exchange Board of India serves as a relevant reference
publication. First published in 2004, this Handbook is fourth in the series. Presented
in a lucid manner, the Handbook contains 131 statistical tables arranged in five
parts. Historical data on the Indian securities market are arranged in monthly and
annual series. The Handbook is brought out in both formats i.e. print and pocket CD.
Besides, it is also available on the SEBI website for easy access to everyone.
Data in this Handbook were collated from RBI, BSE, NSE, World Federation
of Exchanges and also from other publications of SEBI. This Handbok will be a one-
point repository of data on the Indian Securities Market.
The work was accomplished under the overall guidance of Dr. T. C. Nair,
Whole Time Member and officials of Research Department. I compliment all of them
for bringing out such a useful publication.
I am sure that the Handbook will be useful for policy-makers, institutions,
market participants, academicians, researchers and all others interested in the
development of the Indian securities market.
