  • Slide Objective:Discuss the status quo of enterprise communications, and present the Microsoft vision for Unified Communications.Note: This slide has a build and has been designed to be presented in two parts to allow for a discussion on the “today” (initial build) and the “vision” (build after you click the mouse).Initial Build—Communications Today, Talking Points:Technology has brought us a very long way in terms of how we communicate in the business world. E-mail, telephones, IM, and conference calling enable us to do things today that were unthinkable 20 years ago. But as these technologies have evolved, they have done so independently, in parallel with one another, creating communication silos. These independent silos have led to redundancies and inefficiencies for both the end user and the administrator. It has become difficult and expensive to maintain them and to ensure each is in compliance with business and government regulations. For most companies today, telephony, e-mail, IM, audio conferencing, video conferencing, Web conferencing, and voice mail all live in their own disconnected silos. Each has evolved a separate operating platform—often with proprietary third-party technology—separate Autenticación, separate Administración, and separate Almacenamientoand compliance. This comes with a huge price tag and an equally enormous headache for the end user, who has to remember separate phone numbers, account names, and passwords. Plus, these users have limited communication with each device—for example, not being able to make audio calls from their computers. Ultimately, their communication is disconnected, and their collaboration and innovation are hindered.Final Build—The Microsoft Unified Communications Vision, Talking Points:Microsoft UC reduces complexity by putting people at the center of the communications experience. Our goal is to integrate all of the ways we contact each other in a single environment—using a single identity, presence, and inbox—while providing businesses with the power to choose how they provision those services—whether on their own premises, as cloud services, or in a hybrid fashion.

  • Slide Objective:Discuss how interoperability offers the customer choice in moving to Microsoft Lync Server 2010 voice features (Plus CAL).Talking Points:Deployment Scenario: ReplaceThis customer wants to be on top of the communication scene. In this case, you can recommend replacing the PBX for some or all employees with Lync Server 2010. The customer will get a complete UC solution that also meets enterprise telephony requirements. Lync Server 2010 can connect directly to the PSTN through a gateway or SIP trunking, and it can connect directly to any PBX during the transition phase. Employees can have their phone numbers moved to Lync Server 2010, or they can receive new ones. Advantages:Full and seamless UC experienceHighly cost-effective to purchase and manageDisadvantages:Cultural change represented by the elimination of the PBX and the addition of new communication methodsPurchase of new devicesMost Useful For:All information workers, particularly mobile, collaborative, and new Fastest ROI at locations with no or depreciated legacy infrastructureIssues Resolved: Replacing this organization’s PBX with full UC allows employees to:Have remote access via the InternetClick to join scheduled conferencesClick to join ad hoc conferencesClick to callUse PC audio and videoSupplemental Materials (Case Studies):SprintColombian National PoliceLionbridge Winning in Voice: How Communications Server 14 Enables you to Replace, Enhance, or Add to Legacy CommunicationDeployment Scenario: Enhance“Our organization is not quite ready to transition to a fully unified communication plan. The problem is that since many of our workers are rarely in the office, they miss many of the calls that go directly to their desks. In our business, missed calls are missed opportunities.” In this instance, the customer would benefit from enhancing the current PBX system while leaving it in place. Reassure your customer that Lync Server 2010 will provide full UC in parallel to the existing PBX. Each employee can be given Lync, and Lync can be configured to ring whenever the PBX rings—letting the user receive calls on the road or in the home office. Advantages:Full and seamless UC experienceAllows employees to use PC or phone for voice callsDisadvantages:Ongoing cost for PBX operations and maintenancePresence of phone may slow user adoption of UCMost Useful For:Customers with non-depreciated equipment who also want to provide a best-of-breed UC solutionIssues Resolved: The customer can now begin to transition to a fully unified communication plan, while keeping the recently purchased PBX system in place. The parallel ringing of a PBX phone and Lync can result in fewer missed opportunities, and employees can stay better connected with each other and their customers. Similar to replacing a PBX system, enhancing a PBX system gives users:Remote access via the InternetClick to join scheduled conferencesClick to join ad hoc conferencesClick to callPC audio and videoSupplemental Materials (Case Studies):AT KearneyRoyal Dutch ShellWinning in Voice: How Communications Server 14 Enables you to Replace, Enhance, or Add to Legacy CommunicationDeployment Scenario: Add“In our organization of 12,000 national employees, we really like our PBX. We are, however, interested in adding presence, instant messaging, and conferencing to our system. We tend to do a lot of conferencing, but our conferencing costs are quite expensive. There has to be a way to use our PBX for voice and have a greater presence with each other and our customers.” Lync Server 2010also provides options for this customer. When your customer wants to only add instant messaging and conferencing to the current PBX system, this is the best scenario. With Lync Server 2010, the customer can take advantage of audio, video, and Web conferencing with Lync, in addition to the features of the PBX offerings. Advantages:Eliminates costs for conferencing servicesProvides an option to use the PC for the full audio, video, and Web conferencing experienceProvides rich roster controlsArchitecture investments allow transition to Lync Server voice in the futureDisadvantages:Ongoing costs for PBX operations and maintenanceNo remote phone capabilitiesNo video conferencing while using phoneLimited ad hoc conferencing using Lync Most Useful For:Customers not ready to use Lync Server for voice, but who want to take advantage of Lync Server conferencing to lower costs and improve capabilitiesIssues Resolved: Your customer can keep the existing PBX system, while adding Lync Server 2010 to save on conferencing costs. By adding Lync Server, the customer can:Click to join scheduled conferencesClick to join ad hoc conferencesUse PC audio and videoSupplemental Materials (Case Studies):IntelWinning in Voice: How Communications Server 14 Enables you to Replace, Enhance, or Add to Legacy Communication
  • Microsoft’s approach to Interoperability encompasses several principles and processes including but not limited toListening to customersMaking interoperability an explicit part of the development processEngaging the industryHarboring a healthy partner ecosystemMicrosoft Lync Server 2010 interoperates with a wide variety of partners and platforms across multiple modalitiesDevices - As seen before in the devices page, we have a very healthy device partner ecosystem across devices and peripherals ranging from IP phones to USB headsets spanning partners such as Polycom, Aastra, Plantronics, and Jabra etc.Desktop - Our capabilities for UC extend across platforms such as Windows and Apple. Lync has rich clients for both Windows and MacOS. We have Silverlight based reach clients that work in Internet Explorer, Firefox and Safari.Video – We have committed roadmaps for interoperability for video with HP and Polycom. We have had a really close partnership with TANDBERG and now we are working with CiscoMedia Federation – We will have media federation with next generation Windows Live Messenger (W4) that will allow for peer to peer wideband audio and video between Lync 2010 and messenger. Mobile – Communicator Mobile is available on a wide variety of mobile platforms such as Windows Mobile, Nokia S40 and S60, Motorola Razr v3xx, and third party options exist for integration with RIM and IPhones.Interdomain Federation – We support interdomain presence federation with Cisco’s Unified Presence Server 7.x, IBM Sametime 8.0.2 gateway, and Jabber 5.4 and Google Talk through the Microsoft OCS XMPP gateway (available for free)Public IM connectivity – This has been introduced and offered since Microsoft LCS 2005 SP1. This feature enables IM and presence interoperability with AOL, Windows Live Messenger and Yahoo.
  • Slide Objective: Discuss meeting customer needsNotes:We have a spectrum of devices from partners that provide a wide range of features and functionality and can be used for various purposes. There are users that are totally softphone users and some for whom a headset is a great device and that’s all they need. Others need a speakerphone or a USB phone. Webcams are an integral part of our story, as video has become such a key scenario. Then, moving to the conferencing space, we move to video telepresence rooms to complete that spectrum. This is something we are continuing to build out more and more as new devices become available.
  • NOTES:In this case, Lync Server is NOT split across two data centers, but instead, there are two separate Lync Server installations. Users can fail over from one to the other, but functionality is lost at failover if it relies on information stored in the Lync Server backend. This includes the vast majority of “unavailable features” – user call forwarding settings, etc., can only be restored by manually copying those settings from a backup into the backend in the second pool. Voicemail issues here are the same as in the previous slide. Two modes for failover and failbackAutomatic: backup connection after configurable intervalManual: administrator switch enables connection (manual capability avoids failover on transient
  • NOTES:In this case, Lync Server is effectively split across two data centers – if one data center is lost, the user fails over to the second and still has almost all features, much like the case where a single server is lost in an R2 CS pool.Ability to leave voicemail for the user is lost if the user’s DID number terminates in the failed data center and the associated gateways or SIP trunk connections are lost. This is expected to be a likely case.Response group service is an app running on local pool.
  • Slide Objective:Discuss the business value of Unified Communications technologies.Talking Points:Unified Communications provides the kind of transformational shift that can help businesses survive and thrive through difficult economic times. It allows you to significantly decrease costs associated with travel, communications, and IT administration. In addition, UC enables you to improve your business outcomes by maximizing productivity and fostering collaboration.Let’s discuss Unified Communications in more detail and quantify the areas where UC can have an impact on your business.
  • Slide Objective:Drill down into the cost saving areas of Unified Communications.Talking Points:We’ve combined the cost savings facts into a few mutually exclusive, but collectively comprehensive, areas that have been prioritized to reflect key customer pain points and our top messages. The messaging cost reduction is a key value of Microsoft Exchange 2010. Examples of lower messaging costs:Emory University—reduced 50 percent of storage costs while doubling the number of users per serverTelecom Italia—reduced 40 percent of e-mail servers (from 130 to 70)Reducing travel expenses is one area of concern for every business today:“Microsoft Unified Communications is going to save about 25 to 33 percent of travel expenses.”Xavier Malherbet, Vice Executive Manager,Crédit Agricole S.A., Champagne BourgogneReducingtelephony and audio conferencing charges: Intel—expects to save 20 percent in audio conferencing expensesLower real state and facilities costs: Sprint—real estate cost savings of $25 million each yearReduce cost of communications systems: Sprint—replaced 18 voicemail systems, saving $675,000 annually
