OTHER NEWS AND VIEWS
On Thursday May 2nd
the NOHS Key Club elected next year’s officers.
Congratulations to President Frank Reddy, Vice Presidents Anthony Cha
and Hannah McGrath, and Secretaries Aaron D’Amore and Alisha
Schnupp. We look forward to working with these new officers and ad-
viser Laura Thogmartin in the coming school year.
At our meeting on May 6th
Mr. Kevin Lynch de-
livered a short video and serious talk about the
dangers of texting while driving. While most of
us believe we can multi-task, whenever we take
our eyes off the road for a few seconds to read
or send a text, it’s about the most dangerous
thing we can do while behind the wheel of a car.
Mr. Lynch had shown the video and then spoke
with the students of NOHS earlier that morning.
It was also our pleasure to welcome Kevin’s
wife, Anne, to our gathering.
Saturday morning, May 11th
, found Ken Neuzil,
Amber Pierce, Joe Smith (Amber’s significant
other), Jim Yager, Stan Ball, and Lou Simonyi picking up trash along I-
480 and Great Northern Blvd. It’s always surprising how much drivers dis-
gorge along the highway. We are a service club, even when it means pick-
ing up after the littering public.
On a lighter note, literally a lighter note, we had the pleasure of being en-
tertained on May 13th
by the Strolling Strings under the baton of Christine
Kilbane. This group of fine young musicians practice after school
hours and is made up of various grade levels, the youngest a third grader,

JUNE 2013
President Barbara and Kevin Lynch
2. and the oldest NOHS graduate. It was one of
our regularly scheduled guest nights and Mae
did an outstanding job of preparing a great
meal. Quite a few parents of the musicians
joined us to enjoy the music. It was at this
meeting that we were proud to present a check
to Grace McDougall for their Gold Award pro-
ject to construct a memorial garden at the high
school to honor John Kepperley. Grace was
very grateful and assured us that work would be
completed this summer. Congratulations
Grace!
One of the high points of the Kiwa-
nis year is the evening we award
the scholarships to the deserving
seniors of NOHS. This year the
date was May 16th
at St. Clarence.
President Barb Schirhart happily
presented scholarships to Dana
Borsz, Molly Dutton, Julia
Martynowski, Amy Schnupp, Re-
becca Szabo, and Joe Laumer,
while Ken awarded the six scholar-
ships from the Homecoming 5K to
Brittany Antognazzi, Seth Dun-
can, Joe Laumer, Nicholas Re,
Meghan Slattery, and Rebecca
Szabo. All of scholarship recipi-
ents were invited to join us for din-
ner on June 3rd
. Congratulations to
all these fine young people!
We welcomed our new Key Club
officers for the 2013-14 school year
as well as their parents to our
meeting on May 20th
. President Barb Schirhart
installed the officers named above while their
proud parents looked. Also present were Laura
Thogmartin, Key Club adviser and Clair Mer-
cer, Key Club Lt. Governor for Division 14.
At the school board meeting of May 22nd
, Dr.
Michael Zalar was offered a three-year con-
tract to become North Olmsted’s new Superin-
tendent of Schools. Dr. Zalar comes to us
from the Oregon area of Ohio, which is near To-
ledo. Three members of the Kiwanis club were
in attendance that evening: Ken Neuzil, Linda
Cleary, and Vera Brewer. We look forward

all we can to help the young people of our com-
munity.
And finally, to wrap up a busy month, Kiwanis
members Barb Schirhart with husband Bob,
Bob Wendt with wife Rose, representing the
Republican Club, Linda Cleary, representing
the school board, and Ken Neuzil attended the
North Olmsted Community Council meeting on
the 28th
. From the various chairs, we know that
this year’s Homecoming is getting ready to roll
to another successful event.
TWO UPDATES
Long time member Tom Fabek has moved to
Westlake Village. We will continue to keep
Tom “in the loop” through our monthly newslet-
ters.
Dave Dillon continues to battle the infection
which has kept him pretty much house-bound
for months now. On a real day-to-day basis,
we all realize how much Dave means to our
club. Hang in there, buddy. It will be a great
day when we see that smiling face of yours
again.
And finally………………
