SECTION 5: RESOURCE MANAGEMENT
Global Goals: Every Achievement Counts (Section 5: Resource Management)
Section 5: Resource Management
We have an abundance stream of resources available to sustain our living. It is how
we organize and distribute these resources that matters. ABCDE The World is the
way moving forward. In brief, ABCDE is building an AI driven, Blockchain based
Cognitive resources management system powered by Data, Ethically. To enable and
ensure shared prosperity, true wealth must be produced in the first place. Without
resources, there can’t be distribution. Taking care of people should be the priority in
cities preservation and development. In this section, we shall explore the availability of
technology, the creation and distribution of true wealth, and the options we have
marching towards our future.

Global Goals: Every Achievement Counts (Section 5: Resource Management)
“The world has enough for everyone's need, but not enough for everyone's greed.” ~
Mahatma Gandhi
There had never been problems with the resources. The problems lie within
distribution. How do we prove that statement? Can we have a systematic approach in
building a better resource management system that is more transparent, fair and
inclusive? The logic is simple. If the system is perfect, why do we still have poverty and
hunger issues to be solved? Would someday in the future our great great grandchildren
look back and wonder how their ancestors, us, even allow things such as poverty exist
in our time?
I had the chance to travel North and South throughout a private highway due to work
arrangements. There is this stretch that spans some one kilometer along the journey
that caught my attention. One the left side of that part of the highway, it is a very huge
piece of land being installed with solar panels. One the right side, it is a very huge piece
of land being turned into a housing area. The interesting part is, both developments
started almost the same time, and it seems both projects occupy similar size of land, on
the opposite side, looking at each other.
What flashed through my mind was that wouldn’t it be better if both projects were to
collaborate and work together where the solar panels could indeed be installed at the
rooftop of those homes in the housing area, where energy is being provided on a
self-sustain basis with potential to do trade on the surplus, if any. By having such an
arrangement, we now free up a piece of land (that was originally being used just to
install solar panels on the ground) as we moved the solar panels from the ground to the
rooftops. This piece of land might be turned into another useful development such as for
agriculture and food security purposes.
“ABCDE The World” could be the answer where an AI driven, Blockchain based
Cognitive resource management powered by Data, Ethically is to be developed and
implemented into future cities, in six key areas where true wealth has always been
produced - food, energy, education, shelter, healthcare, entertainment, as we
strategically put people, process, and technology in place.

This ABCDE The World is not a new or wild idea anymore as Toyota is showing the
world a living laboratory, a prototype town of the future through its Woven City initiative.
The commercial introduction is quite enticing, and there is definitely something for
everyone to look upon on the speech delivered by Toyota’s President and CEO Akio
Toyoda during CES 2020 .
1
We live in a world with abundant resources. It could be the system, the methods or the
tools that are limiting our access to these resources. Take the music industry as an
example. Throughout time, people produce music and songs, all over the world. Yet, the
delivery medium took quite a transformational journey over a period of time to reach
here today, as shown below:
Cassette -> CD -> DVD -> USB Drive -> Cloud Storage
Sharing economy, such as the AirBnB or OYO model when it comes to shelter, Uber,
Grab, or GoJek when it comes to transportation, Freelancer.com or Guru.com when it
comes to human resources, had proof that with the help of technology, it is not only be
able to shorten a product or a service’s time to market and widen its reach out, but also
possible to reorganize social resources that are either idle or to be wasted into a more
effective usage.
ABCDE The World?
Emerging tech plays a vital role in shaping our future. Each and every single
technology has its niche to assist us in building a better world. No single tech works
alone and only by knitting relevant and related technologies together properly that we
are able to augment the future we ought to have. Nonetheless, to make things simpler
and easier to be comprehended by the masses, four key technology clusters strongly
built on a single base have been identified and should be made into a collective global
movement that we coined ABCDE The World.
Using the phrase “ABCDE The World” or hashtag “#ABCDETheWorld” is to simplify
what could have been a very complicated process and complex integration in
augmenting the desirable future the majority of us would like to have. Having a short

and precise movement call to action can ensure easy comprehension of the idea for the
masses. The reason behind is that in terms of literacy, most people who speak or use
English would have known all the alphabets from A to Z, at least the first few of them if
not all 26 alphabets, just like how we all started our numeracy with 123. The tagline
could reach out to children young enough who had just started to learn the alphabets.
The initial four letters of “ABCDE” in the phrase represents the technology or ideas
behind each word. A for Artificial Intelligence, B for Blockchain, C for Connectivity, and
D for Data. The E for Ethics puts the human touch and morality to the tagline. Without
ethics, things may go the unwanted path, especially when it purely involves math and
logic. However, it is quite debatable on the flexibility or the room for choices to be made.
Note also the wider scope that Connectivity brings. It is a larger set of technology or
concept which is more inclusive than to merely use any tech vocabulary that starts with
the capital C. For instance, keywords such as Cloud Computing or Cybersecurity can be
architected as a subset of Connectivity. The Internet of Things (IoT), and the Internet of
Everything by themselves have the main purpose of actualizing connectivity. Let’s get
into each and every alphabet of the phrase in detail, as what is being illustrated in

Global Goals: Every Achievement Counts (Section 5: Resource Management)
A for Artificial Intelligence (AI). While many may have their own sets of definition for AI,
it is a field of computer science that puts intelligence into machines. AI provides speed,
enables the information processing scale and depth.
To illustrate, let’s use fact finding as an example. If we were given a task to find out how
many times the word “data” is being used in a 200 pages physical book, it is achievable
even without a computer. It is just a matter of time for us to complete the task.
Digitization turns that printed book into a softcopy, and the “find and replace” feature in
any standard editorial software or “find” feature in any standard reading software that
comes with it accomplishes the task in split second.
What if the number of books that is in our research bucket comes in hundreds, even
thousands? And the type of research material not only comes in terms of text format,
but also in the form of images, audio, and even video files?
To take it further beyond extracting information (data mining), analysing and
understanding those information, thus taking appropriate reactions based on what is
being presented and understood is another challenge. AI assists us in achieving that. It
complements us in terms of speed, accuracy and efficiency. As long as energy is
supplied, AI doesn’t get tired or bored, as human beings do, and most likely will.
B for Blockchain, a technology that promises transparency, traceability, and immutability.
The key is decentralization and security, besides privacy and empowerment. In a way,
blockchain technology solved the digital dilemma of issuing digital money. Prior to the
existence of Blockchain as we know it, it is difficult to have a perfect digital money due
to the characteristic of digital content which is easy to duplicate, in mass volume, with
identical quality in split second. Thus, the first killer app we see in this space is the
cryptocurrency we all know as bitcoin. However, this is just the tip of the iceberg. There
is more to the technology.
Blockchain facilitate the transfer of value. There is a saying that what the World Wide
Web did to the media industry is what blockchain technology is going to do to the
banking or finance industry as we know it.
What problems are blockchain solving? The first killer apps it brings is digital currency,
which is also known as cryptocurrency. The technology promises a better financial
ecosystem through a more inclusive, fairer ecosystem, as it brings banking to the
unbanked and underbanked. The first widely known blockchain application - Bitcoin - is

the starting point to provide an alternative to the fiat-based financial system. Bitcoin is
the proof of concept for what is believed to be the internet of money.
While we have yet to see a major adoption for blockchain technology in 2020, the shift
is happening as Millennials and Generation Z are taking control of what they’re doing .
2
There are three major shifts that will lead to worldwide blockchain adoption, which
include:
● a shift from the mere physical world to a hybrid world where physical world and
digital space co-exist and somehow interlinked,
● a shift away from centralized governing bodies to a more people-centric,
community based governance system, and
● a shift from the centralized financial system into a decentralized economy.
These shifts are reshaping our world, in which individuals are empowered to control
their own future, not having to rely on a centralized third party. Take note that
Blockchain is only the tip of the iceberg. If you just look at the application of money,
you’re missing the point. There are more possibilities and wonders we can do with the
technology, and the solutions will ripple out to other sectors that are beyond finance.
Quoted from Andreas Antonopoulos speech in September 2016, “You can take the
language, the building blocks of this platform and use them to construct other languages
that communicate value. Tokens. Reward points. Brand loyalty coins. Some will have
economic use, some will simply be expressions of loyalty, affiliation, they will represent
items in the physical world. The title for a house. The controlling key for a car that can
be transferred from one owner to another, and five seconds later that owner can step
into the car and drive away, because the car can validate the new standard of
ownership. We cannot yet imagine what applications we’re going to build around this.”3
If history were to repeat itself, Blockchain phenomena is one of such events that we
witnessed happened in such a short period. It is likened to the internet, all over again.
Smart money is just the beginning, there are things like smart contracts, smart energy,
4
smart assets etc coming into the picture of our daily life. One of the solutions blockchain

technology is bringing is the introduction of non-fungible tokens which could change the
way we own things .
5
An item that is fungible is interchangeable with another identical item. For instance, the
one dollar notes are all worth the same. However, the non-fungible works differently in a
way where identifying information is embedded, making each non-fungible item
completely unique. Think of it like the air ticket or movie pass, though the general
information could be the same, the seat number for each ticket is different. Thus,
non-fungible tokens are ideal for recording and storing the ownership of digital items
that could be of value, such as arts, collectibles etc. In other words, non-fungible tokens
have been revolutionizing the ownership of tokenized intellectual property and real
estates. Blockchain technology provides a new way of creating, storing, and even
transferring of Digital IDs.
Yet, the technology is still at the infancy stage and has quite some challenges to
overcome though it had been known to the people since nearly 10 years ago. These
would not only be a technology problem where innovation and interoperability is still
much needed, but also a problem in governance, data ownership and commercial
business models in terms of how they incentivize ecosystem stakeholders to collaborate
with each other. As written by Bart Wyatt in his Cointelegraph’s column, “Blockchain
can bring transparency, security, new incentive models and ownership of data to the
world at a time when these traits are desperately needed. That promise will be difficult
to achieve until blockchains can communicate and cooperate with each other. To
achieve this, developers, companies and hobbyists alike must be able to leverage every
platform without being locked into one simply because the platform developers are not
working together.”6
While some schools of thoughts would intentionally separate blockchain into the
technology and the financial part, they are somehow interrelated. By default, in the case
of bitcoin, both characteristics exist in one single entity. The programmable money part
of it is what makes this technology interesting and promising in solving the sustainable
development challenges. We will look into this when we go further into the
Cryptocurrency discussion shortly in upcoming paragraphs. Prior to that, we need to
look into the bigger C first.

Global Goals: Every Achievement Counts (Section 5: Resource Management)
There is a limitation for us human beings in extracting information from a vast amount of
input and multiple streams of sources. While AI is good at processing the data, and
Blockchain ensures integrity, how would the gathering of data from sources be done? A
well connected computer system will definitely help.
This brings us to C for Connectivity. It was appropriated from a few words starting with
the capital C as we simplified the suggested movement to ABCDE The World. We found
a common characteristic when we talk about Cloud Computing, Cyber security,
Cryptocurrency, Capitalism where all of them coincidently facilitate connections.
Remember that content + connection in the previous chapter? This will be a more
advanced and complex development compared to simply media perspective.
Let’s start with Cloud Computing. Digitization is about moving the paper based info into
the digital world, or computerization as we called it. It is simple and straightforward,
converting whatever in the real world into the digital form so it can be managed and
processed in a more effective way. Digital transformation is about how organizations
work as they move into the virtual world. Forget about the standalone PC or
supercomputer, the pre-internet era. Everything is being connected and the number of
nodes is growing exponentially as we pass the tipping point with the Internet of Things.
And now, the Internet of Everything.
Online, on cloud, on chain. Getting online is just the beginning of being connected.
Online could be as simple as having a peer to peer connection for conversation or for
the transfer of value. For example, the use of instant messaging to keep in touch or a
peer-to-peer digital currency wallet to transfer money between two parties. Getting
online has happened since the beginning of the internet.
In the early days of hosting files on a remote computer, it could be only a single server
or a setup with one server and a few redundant servers at a remote site for access over
the internet. There might be different types of servers setup for different services, such
as web server, file server, database server etc. A hosting service might consist of
several server functionalities sold in a package deal.
As technology advances, we now have cloud computing, which is the on-demand
availability of computer system resources, especially data storage and computing
power, without direct active management by the user. On-demand availability without
direct active management by the user makes computer system resource management
much easier and more effective.

Global Goals: Every Achievement Counts (Section 5: Resource Management)
From a technical point of view, cloud computing is the practice of using a network of
remote servers hosted on the Internet to store, manage, and process data . It is the
7
delivery of computing services—including servers, storage, databases, networking,
software, analytics, and intelligence—over the Internet (“the cloud”) to offer faster
innovation, flexible resources, and economies of scale . Rather than a fixed quota of
8
resource allocation, there is a flexibility in allocating related resources among users,
upon on-demand and availability basis.
From the business perspective, you typically pay only for cloud services that you use,
thus helping you to lower your operating costs, run your infrastructure more efficiently,
and scale as your business needs change. The obvious difference between
conventional hosting model and cloud computing is the monthly or annual subscription
model versus the pay as you use model. Similar to that of electricity or water usage
billing. Some buffers in the budgeting might be required in such an arrangement as the
figures fluctuate over time.
While cloud computing works in a more centralized mode, most of the blockchain works
in a decentralized model based on Satoshi Nakamoto’s initial idea of coming up with a
decentralized form of digital money. Bitcoin, the first known blockchain to the mass, is
designed to be A Peer-to-Peer Electronic Cash System , which works on a
9
decentralized network. Thus, there is this phrase on chain. Whether it is on cloud or on
chain, from a data perspective, it is still a way to keep records and info. The idea is to
better manage our data resources, securely.
In terms of cyber security, 24/7 connection brings 24/7 security risk. That’s a package
deal. A strong, stable and secure connection is important because it can provide
real-time analytics which in turn enables real-time security. The need to protect people
and assets has never been greater, especially given the pandemic outbreak in 2020 as
an early warning towards the unknown future. Besides the traditional server hacking
and other internet security breach activities, facility and security staff are facing new
mandates - such as preventing crowding, controlling building access, and conducting

health screenings . Everybody must equip themselves with sufficient tech knowledge to
10
catch up with the global progress.
It is worth noting that cyber security has much to do with human behavior as well. Small
little things like having a strong password, do not disclose too much personal
information in digital open space (just like how people will not disclose too much privacy
in the real world’s public area), be very well aware of the digital footprint etc. will have
big impact or consequences to the data privacy or digital assets that are supposed to be
well kept and protected. Stay safe, stay strong and be very alert, just as how you fight a
pandemic or virus threat. The cyber security threat is always there. It exists 24/7 as long
as you are on the grid.
As we enlarge the scope to a smart city which involves daily routine of the people, cyber
security will become even more important and crucial as we are not only talking about
data breach but also hijacking of remote control devices that could be fatal to human
life. Imagine a future city where vehicles are highly connected and transporting people
daily within the city. What may happen if any of the vehicles, or even a single crucial
component of a vehicle being compromised? The system must be well protected and
smart enough to identify not only threat, but ideally potential threat so appropriate
measures or relevant reactions could be carried out before accidents happen.
If you happen to have a platform that guarantees certain trust functions, one very useful
application for that is to build a currency, and a payment network. This brought us to
cryptocurrency, a programmable money. The biggest breakthrough going on chain is the
ability to program our money. Money can now have more functionalities rather than
being just a medium of transfer, a store of value, or a unit of accounting.
"We are seeing the digital world come at us more quickly than we could have imagined
– and UNICEF must be able to use all of the tools of this new world to help children
today and tomorrow. The transfer of these funds – to eight companies in seven
countries around the world – took less than 20 minutes and cost us less than $20.
Almost instant global movement of value, fees of less than 0.00009% of the total
amount transferred, and real-time transparency for our donors and supporters are the
types of tools we are excited about.” - Chris Fabian, UNICEF Ventures co-lead .

Global Goals: Every Achievement Counts (Section 5: Resource Management)
Looking at the maturity of Bitcoin and other major cryptocurrencies, central banks and
governments around the world are playing the catch up game. Majority of the
conventional financial system powers are formulating the Central Bank-issued Digital
Currency (CBDC), a tamed beast to the benefits of the power house, to ensure system
security and stability for the stakeholders. What the people innovate, the states
eventually appropriates.
Can money function more than just money? Indeed, it can and it will, because we now
have programmable money. Money can put on different hats and function accordingly,
based on the environment they are in, or the situation they are put into.
The question should not be whether I am allowed to do it or not, but rather how can I
make this happen. It is good that we have the direction of coming up with a technical
and policy framework for programmable money first. Implementation wise, it is do-able
technically due to its programmable nature.
Take the analogy of a simplified illustration of daily life of a working male adult: Early
morning as he steps into the office, he will play the role as an employee of the company,
where his action will be bound by company rules and (common) work culture. After
office hours, as he transits back from work to home, he would be bound by social
etiquette and city rules along the way. At home, he could be playing the role of a
husband, and a father to his children, where family values play the major factor defining
the activities he could be carrying.12
Money as we know it is evolving. It now can be something smarter as we put life into it.
Rather than just a piece of paper or a string of numbers to facilitate trades, the
functionality of being the medium of exchange can now be enhanced and upgraded
machines or software alike form, because it can be programmed. That is going to be
very enticing and exciting.
D for Data. We have heard enough of the phrase “Data is new oil”. What’s the difference
between Data and crude oil as we know it? We can look at it from a few perspectives -
the form they exist, the way they were being produced, the quantity and the market
value.
12
https://www.slideshare.net/howtze/blockchain-insider-chapter-3-smart-money
http://www.thesdgs2030.com © 2020 BSYS Solution (M) Sdn Bhd. All Rights Reserved.
Global Goals: Every Achievement Counts (Section 5: Resource Management)
First of all, crude oil is physical. We can see it, touch it, and use it in the real world. Data
in the digital format is not touchable, and they exist only in the virtual world. The only
way we “see” the data is through the display screen of devices such as a desktop, a
mobile phone or future smart devices.
Secondly, it may take up to millions of years in order for crude oil to be formed. It may
take quite some time to find, extract and process the commodity so that it can be
consumed finally at the consumer end. The creation of digital content may happen in
just a click, such as pressing the button on our smart phone to take a beautiful photo.
As such, it is easy to come to the point that crude oil will become less and less as we
consume due to the long formation period and fast consumption speed. But data is only
going to be more and more due to the easy creation and not much storage space and
housekeeping needed. Let’s take a simple challenge here, can you maintain the number
of photos in your mobile phone for a long period without transferring them out to another
storage area? What about the daily messages that happen over your communication
apps? Are you going to delete off everything on a daily or periodic basis?
So, based on supply and demand theory, and the market mechanism as we know it, the
price of crude oil may be fluctuating over time, but data would be relatively cheap
compared to crude oil. Take note that relatively cheap is only from the production
perspective, which doesn’t equate to no value.
Table below summarizes the points as discussed thus far:
Table 5.1 Crude Oil VS Data
Crude Oil Data (Digital)
Appearance Physical Virtual
Formation Millions of year Fast, can be split second
Scarcity Reduced in quantity as consumed Ever increasing in size
Price Fluctuates Relatively cheap
There must be some meaning behind when people say “Data is new oil”. It is the value
data may generate and provide. Digitization is just the first step towards transformation.
It has to be complemented by other related and relevant business processes. Only
when the conversion of written data into digital format and a certain level of business

Global Goals: Every Achievement Counts (Section 5: Resource Management)
process being revamped and enhanced, a digital transformation can be actualized and
efficiency can be scaled.
Data is valuable in the sense that it does not only provide information, but valuable
insights. When data is properly managed and processed, it gives us more untold,
hidden messages behind the figures.
Data also can be used as a form of currency. It can be a medium of exchange. This is
not something new. For instance, the free use of social media is being paid by the
privacy and information created by the users who took up the “free lunch”. Remember
the golden advice of “sometimes the most expensive thing comes under the wrapping of
a free tag”. You might not be paying in terms of monetary deal, but you could be paying
with something else rather than money. This may cost more, when you give it a deeper
thought.
In summary, data provides us not only informational value but also transactional value.
Something that couldn’t be reached using the conventional approach.
"If preservation of humanity is the objective, the existence of pure human race is not
compulsory. After all, humanity is illusive. it is not biologically bound either. Humanity
can exist in machines." ~ Max Tegmark

E for Ethics . According to Max Tegmark in his book “Life 3.0, Being Human In The Age
14
of Artificial Intelligence”, three most likely future that we might anticipate as we keep
improving our AI would be:
15
● The existence of “Friendly AI” where we live well with it, or
● AIs perceived as worthy “descendants,” replacing us and sharing our values etc.,
or
● Worst, where AIs become conquerors.

Image 5.2 Recommended Readings for ABCDE The World
Personally, I read books as one of my knowledge sources, besides the learning from
educational platforms (both online and offline), and media channels over the internet.
Conversation with wise people and experienced experts also give me lots of great and
valuable input on my works. Image above just to show how things had always been
there waiting for us to think, relate and come out with that “aha!” moment, or eureka, so
to speak.
It was a morning thought that somehow sparked into my mind how ABCDE The World
can be further detailed. These books had always been with me for quite some time.Yet it
took me quite a while to see how they relate in what I am up to, and want to be part of.
While Life 3.0 on AI, The Age of Cryptocurrency on Blockchain, and Reinventing
Capitalism in the Age of Big Data is quite straightforward for what they meant, the
Chinese reference, an introductory to the I Ching or Yi Jing, is leading to another vast

Global Goals: Every Achievement Counts (Section 5: Resource Management)
field of knowledge, which somehow bring us to know further on the part of Connectivity,
or even Ethics that is going to support this ABCDE The World movement. The I Ching or
Yi Jing, which is usually translated as Book of Changes or Classic of Changes, is an
ancient Chinese divination text and among the oldest of the Chinese classics . There is
16
definitely a universe of wisdom in this classic masterpiece, and the book shown in the
image is only the door opening part leading into that vast, mysterious world, which might
have all the answers we had always been looking for.
Putting these four books together, the first puzzle seems complete. The power to relate
plays an important role here. It is how tech and the human interaction is finally woven
17
into a stable existence that matters, of which we shall explore further in the next two
chapters in this section.
Dealing with AI will be one of the most interesting conversations of our time. The threat
of Cyber warfare has become more challenging than ever before. Instead of human vs
human, we now also face scenarios where human vs computer, and even computer vs
computer. While technology brings efficiency, it’s a double edge sword. History proves
that tools have always been mis-used for purposes out of their original intention. Since
we are the first creator of advanced computer systems, it is really up to us to set things
right in the very beginning, as much as we can, before it goes out of control. The phrase
first creator is being used here because there is no guarantee that super smart
machines will someday be able to produce a more advanced breed of lifeform on this
planet.
Welcome to the most important conversation of our time. Being a science stream
student exposed to Physics, Biology, Chemistry, and Add Maths, then graduated as a
Computer Engineer where the final year thesis is a primitive Enterprise Resource
Planning System written in Java Language (with help from brilliant coursemates), it is
still quite challenging to understand what was written in the book by Max Tegmark. Yet,
this has been one of the most interesting books to be explored to date.
What can be controlled, is ought to be controlled, and will be controlled. To build a
powerful AI system, emulate our brain, and don't forget the Ethics part of it.

Global Goals: Every Achievement Counts (Section 5: Resource Management)
True Wealth: Food, Education, Energy, Shelter, Healthcare,
Entertainment
Livelihood of human beings are centered around six core categories. Civilization
starts when we stop moving, from nomad to settlement. We need a place to shelter so
we can keep living and progress forward with our achievements. Food is the
non-negotiable survival need as it powers our biological appearance. Without health,
everything else is meaningless. Energy powers up most of the facilities and utilities
we need. Education makes us literate and enables legacy for continual survival of
human beings as a species on this planet. Last but not least, entertainment puts a
balance into our life. Proper work and rest routine to keep us afresh. Taking the first
letter from each category, we got F.E.E.S.H.E. which produces true wealth.
What is wealth? How do you define wealth? From a very personal perspective, it could
be a measure of a person's ability to survive so many days forward. How many days
can you survive without any income from now onwards? Many people and businesses
had been given the test on this during the pandemic lockdown in 2020. From a higher
perspective, wealth is the product of energy times intelligence: energy turned into
artifacts that advantage human life. Whatever the mind can perceive and believe, it can
be achieved.
“I find man utterly unaware of what his wealth is or his fundamental capability is. He
says time and again, "We can't afford it." For instance, we are saying now that we can't
afford to do anything about pollution but after the costs of not doing something about
pollution have multiplied many fold beyond what it would cost to correct it now, we will
spend many fold what it would cost us now to correct it.” ~ R. Buckminster Fuller
Controlled time is our true wealth. When leaders realize that automation can multiply
man's wealth far more rapidly than it is multiplying at present and that automation will
leave all men free to search and research, we will have met a tipping point in our
collaborative human progress, to excel further into a more promising future to all
mankind. The focus should not be to increase jobs, but to multiply the wealth and to
expand the numbers benefited by the wealth at the swiftest possible rate. How so?

Global Goals: Every Achievement Counts (Section 5: Resource Management)
“We find all the no-life-support-wealth-producing people going to their 1980s jobs in
their cars and buses, spending trillions of dollars' worth of petroleum daily to get to their
no-wealth-producing jobs. It doesn't take a computer to tell you that it will save both the
Universe and humanity trillions of dollars a day to pay them handsomely to stay at
home.” ~ R. Buckminster Fuller
This leads to the idea of Universal Basic Income (UBI), a guaranteed payment for the
people to provide enough to cover the basic cost of living. We explored UBI as we
discussed it in the Sustainable Development section. Now, let’s explore the areas where
true wealth can be produced, so that we have enough to provide, regardless of
situation.
What does produce true wealth? Food, Education, Energy, Shelter, Healthcare,
Entertainment.
Image 5.3 True Wealth
“Give them food and entertainment, and there won’t be riot.”
Food, and perhaps entertainment, the most immediate or base requirements of a
populace, had been very important in the political context. Bread and circuses, a
palliative offered especially to avert potential discontent. Thus, food security is one of

Global Goals: Every Achievement Counts (Section 5: Resource Management)
the most important concerns and priority to any government and community in the
world.
In some countries, during the pandemic lock down, we had seen how some food
resources, especially fruits and vegetables in certain areas needed to be destroyed or
thrown away due to transportation issues, such as roadblocks or confinements. While in
certain areas far away from these food sources, there had been dire needs just to feed
the ones who suddenly fell into a shortage of consumable food, caused by the same
logistic challenges.
To ensure a sustainable food supply and closing the gap of food production and
distribution between rural and urban areas, specifically crowded cities, we had seen
technologies which include but not limited to vertical farming or urban farming etc being
implemented in places such as rooftops and usable areas of high rise buildings. New
technologies such as IoT and automation brought by Industrial Revolution 4.0 (IR4)
have made food production and distribution more timely and efficient as well.
Food chains, from farm to table, from production to processing, from distribution to
consumers, have not only been made more transparent, but also fairer in terms of
revenue and profit distribution thanks to traceability and transparency that technology
brings. The supply chain and distribution channels of food is important as it affects the
healthiness and well-being of the consumers.
True wealth from the food perspective should not be limited to the monetary or
economic perspective of it, but also the social side and environmental impact of it. As
we produce our food, are we giving enough attention to preserve the environment while
making rooms for food production? Are we handling well any harmful particles as we
process our food, as far as the factory end and as close as our kitchen?
With more than a quarter of a billion people potentially at the brink of starvation, swift
action needs to be taken to provide food and humanitarian relief to the most at-risk
regions. The challenge has been well addressed in United Nations Sustainable
19
Development Goals 2, where zero hunger has been set as the ultimate aim to feed the
people around the world. A profound change of the global food and agriculture system
is needed if we are to nourish the entire world citizens.

Global Goals: Every Achievement Counts (Section 5: Resource Management)
Food security through the increasing agricultural productivity and sustainable food
production are crucial not only to help alleviate the perils of hunger, but also to ensure
global stability. Shared prosperity should start from food, the very essential biological
needs of every human being.
"Yesterday I was clever, so I wanted to change the world. Today I am wise, so I am
changing myself." ~ Rumi.
For things to change, first I must change. When I change, the world changes. You can't
change what's going on around you until you start changing what's going on within you.
Change doesn't happen by chance, it happens by choices we make. In order for better
choices be made, seeding through education is one proven method since our existence
as a species on this planet.
“Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.” ~
Nelson Mandela
Obtaining a quality education is the foundation to creating sustainable development,
because education enables upward socioeconomic mobility and is a key to escaping
poverty. In addition to improving quality of life, access to inclusive education can help
equip locals with the tools required to develop innovative solutions to the world’s
greatest problems. However, quality and inclusive education come with a price tag.
20
“If you think education is expensive, try ignorance.” ~ Derek Bok
One way to have education resources intact is the wise, optimized or perhaps the
recycle use of related materials. For instance, the case where garbage collectors open
a library with abandoned books in Ankara, Turkey.
As reported by CNN, the garbage men gathered forsaken books for months and put it
into a library meant only for employees and their families. Residents began donating
books directly as word of the collection spread. When the collection grew and interest
spread throughout the community, the library was eventually opened to the public.21

Global Goals: Every Achievement Counts (Section 5: Resource Management)
Above is just one of many examples of how we never lack resources but the problem
with the distribution of it. Most of the resources we are blessed with were abandoned or
forsaken, while they could and should be put to better use. We need more people like
the garbage collectors in Turkey around the world to have that awareness and who are
willing to take the initiatives to better allocate our resources.
From resources to beneficiaries, inclusive education is something not to be ignored.
Goal 4 of the SDGs is set to ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and
promote lifelong learning opportunities for all. Education is the foundation of a child’s
22
future and it can take any form, be it through the traditional method that human beings
had been using for centuries, a systematic classroom style or self-learning through an
educational platform in the digital world etc, as long as the purpose is achieved. Every
child deserves a chance to an education to reach their fullest potential.23
"Educating the mind without educating the heart is no education at all." ~ Aristotle
Education should not be focused only on living skills. While it is important to know the
basics as in read, write, and calculate, it is also important to have the balance from the
psychological and soul searching part of it. Personally, I think it is safe to say that our
existence is not of any coincidence. While many may have believed that we are left with
no options if things were predestined, how sure we are that these are not the choices
we made prior to us taking the human form and exist in this world as we know and
aware of? Skillsets and mindsets are both equally important.
“If you want to find the secrets of the universe, think in terms of energy, frequency and
vibration.” ~ Nikola Tesla
Nikola Tesla, known for his idea of free electricity for all, stated that all people
everywhere should have free energy sources; electric power is everywhere, present in
unlimited quantities, and can drive the world's machinery without the need for coal, oil,
or gas. Reality is, it could be easier said than done. Just like E equals to MC square,
energy takes the path from one form to another, yet it doesn’t appear or vanish just like
that. Costs involved in setting up our energy sources. Even to transform the free solar
from the sun into usable electricity that powers our daily life involves costings such as

producing and installation of related tools and devices. If you are getting anything for
free, it might be just that you are not paying it directly, but somehow it gets paid
indirectly. Someone has to foot the bill someday somehow.
When economic values exist in something that is needed and essential to our daily life,
wealth can be produced. Take the case of direct sunlight as not just an energy source,
but how wealth can be generated through the indirect use of it.
The “garden city” is a vision that was introduced on 11 May 1967 by then Prime Minister
Lee Kuan Yew to transform Singapore into a city with abundant lush greenery and a
clean environment in order to make life more pleasant for the people. Singapore has
24
no natural resources to fall back on, nor nature wonders that can make it a natural
tourism spot like most of it surrounding countries. There is a story behind this
development. It was in 1972 that the tourism board sent a report to the then Prime
Minister of Singapore stating that besides sunlight throughout the year, nothing was
there in the small island country that was able to turn it into a tourism hotspot. Of which,
the president replied, “What else do you need? It’s the sunlight! Sunlight is all we need!”
As long as the sun still shines, rest assured energy will always be around. And when
25
you start to count your blessings, miracles happen.
“Be careful not to let the things that you don't have to blindfold you from noticing all the
blessings in your life.” ~ Edmond Mbiaka
The point to ponder here is that we have an abundance stream of resources available to
sustain our living. It is how we organize and distribute these resources that matters. In
terms of energy, the Global Energy Grid is one of the most exciting and laudable
initiatives to be further explored. Global Energy Grid was dubbed the World Game's26
Highest Priority by Dr. R. Buckminster Fuller. The Global Energy Network Institute
(GENI) , which was founded in 1986 by Peter Meisen to investigate the idea of Dr. R.
27
Buckminster Fuller, comes with a mission to accelerate the attainment of optimal,
ecologically sustainable energy solutions in the shortest possible time for the peace,
health and prosperity of all.

Global Goals: Every Achievement Counts (Section 5: Resource Management)
Besides the GENI initiatives, other private collaboration in the emerging tech sector is
also gaining traction in providing a more effective energy distribution system. For
instance, the telecommunications giant Vodafone, which is a global leader in
internet-of-things (IoT) with over 100 million connections worldwide, has partnered with
blockchain startup Energy Web (EWT) to connect "billions" of distributed energy
generating assets via IoT and distributed ledger technology (DLT). At time of writing,
work in progress includes looking at renewable and distributed assets (such as wind
turbines, batteries, heat pumps, solar panels etc) to be integrated with energy grids
safely and efficiently, inspired by the way that telecom operators securely identify mobile
phones using SIM cards for grids to identify and track distributed energy sources.28
There is a need for convergence of multiple sectors in making the energy transition
happen, and it is happening not only within the energy sector itself, but also cross
industries among automotive, telecoms, and even finance. The Honda and General
Motors collaboration in smart grid and electric car research is one of the many ongoing
works which see Blockchain emerges as a potential key to Electric Vehicles stabilizing
power supplies. The concept of Peer-to-Peer Energy trading has also been tested in
29 30
countries like India, Thailand, and Australia, with the backing of Blockchain technology
provided by companies like Power Ledger. It’s just a matter of cross-countries energy
trading to happen over time, as that would remain a geopolitical challenge, not a
technical one.
A global electric energy grid linking the renewable energy resources around the world
should be made the number one priority to solve many of the world's most pressing
problems. This would reduce global pollution, world hunger, population growth, and
increase living standards, international trade, cooperation and world peace. Energy
powers the world.
From early hunting days where human beings seek shelter in caves, to farming era
where communities were built and live in villages alike settings, to modern days
urbanization, we have come a long way in providing a safe place to stay for our peers
and fellow human beings. Safety and stability is what we seek behind the shelters. A
place we call home. While still a lot people may have been left with few or even no

choices when it comes to a staying place, most are blessed enough to have at least the
basics such as a roof over the head and food in the refrigerator.
How do we ensure enough living space for every citizen on this planet? How do we
effectively manage our resources so supply and demand are well balanced? We had
seen enough abandoned real estate development projects and untaken spaces
everywhere yet some are still left living around as tramp.
There was this experience in a small town called Sungai Jawi in Penang, Malaysia,
where a friend of mine shared with me the model how a new housing project just
opposite his village was being developed. It was still an underdeveloped area back
then, nearly 30 years ago. A real estate developer decided to provide a modern,
brick-and-mortar house to the villagers nearby who still lived in wooden houses back
then. The way he was doing the development was to collect enough takers for the new
houses first, before he committed and started the development process, as he built the
houses on a row by row basis, rather than a one time development of a full housing
area comprising a hundred units of houses. As such, the development ensured that only
houses that got confirmed buyers were built over controlled time, and no single
resource was being wasted by building houses and waiting for people to come and buy,
which is way more risky and wasting resources. Build on demand is one way to
effectively manage the construction resources.
Worth noting is the tiny house movement, which inspires many people to live a simple
and minimalist life. It isn't necessarily about sacrifice. One of the big ideas supporting
the tiny house movement is freedom. It’s not just about financial concerns, it’s way
beyond. It involves environmental concerns, and people’s desire for more time. Imagine
the time and resources it takes to manage and maintain a bigger space where only a
few people live in it. Remember that the world has enough for everyone's needs, but not
everyone's greed.
We had been discussing the construction and building side of shelters. What about the
excessive stocks or untaken units we have to date scattered all around the world? It’s
quite similar to the food resources distribution scenario, just that the frequency of
moving is not as fast as what food distribution is, where food is being moved around to
be consumed on a daily basis. Real estates mostly stick to a place, it is people that are
moving in and out.
Applications based on time sharing and resource repurpose concepts have proven to be
one good solution in reactivating idle properties, such as co-working space, room

Global Goals: Every Achievement Counts (Section 5: Resource Management)
sharing, and ride hailing apps. Can we do that to buildings that had been over supplied?
We have seen some efforts trying to convert some of the hotels into old folks homes or
orphanage shelters, those smaller scale operators rather than bigger hotel chains.
Reuse, repurpose is a way out to save underutilized shelters. Policy must be able to
catch up to shorten the time to market when we reallocate the resources to a better use
when things don't go as planned.
Providing resources and solutions for people to live off the grid is an alternative to
urbanization. Note that living off-grid means living autonomously without reliance on a
utility for power. Thus, alternative power options like solar or wind energy might be
required. It may be ideal for rural locations where there is a lack of reliable grid access.
People might find it fancy and interesting to live in places like a tree house, occasionally.
But will they, or you adapt to a longer period living off-the-grid? Live, learn, work, play. It
doesn’t have to be in a highly urbanized cityscape.
Healthcare is not only about healing the sick but also about the well-being of everybody.
While prevention is always better than cure, accidents happen. Somehow,
complementarity of nutrition and pharmacology exists when it comes to healthcare
related matters. We shall be looking at personal points of view and zoom out to the
community or nation-state perspective of how healthcare can be taken care of.
By all means, taking care of ourselves is very helpful in terms of generating wealth to
the society as a whole. Because communities, societies, nation-states, they all are built
upon the smallest unit of a single person. Each and every individual counts in producing
a wealthy nation. Only when the mind and body is both psychologically and physically fit
that a nation can propel and progress peacefully.
If you think wellness is expensive, try illness. You are what you eat. Let the food be thy
medicine rather than let the medicine be thy food. Pay farmers now or pay pharmacists
later. Not only is eating habits important, the daily routine and lifestyle will have an
impact on our health too. We can make time out of our hectic work schedules now to
keep ourselves fit through exercises or wellness workouts, or to have that plenty of time
lying on hospital beds later should something severe happen to our overloaded body.
So, creating awareness and bringing that healthy life practices to the community or
society should be the foundation of providing effective healthcare that would eventually
lead to true wealth creation.

Global Goals: Every Achievement Counts (Section 5: Resource Management)
What should we do if things like a global pandemic outbreak happen? It did happen.
Rest assured it is not the first and it is not going to be the last time as well. Let alone a
great disaster that could wipe out all we had been building throughout the centuries,
always keep the faith and hope, life will find its way. For instance, a search on Google
Sheets case study reveals how a woman at risk for severe illness from COVID-19
mobilized relief from her home. It was an inspiring story of how digitization and the use
of technology empowers people within a community to help each other in time of crisis.
To elaborate further, quoted from the site, the woman, “Erin wanted to connect
volunteers with high-risk people in need. So, aided by three local college students, she
made the website Louisville COVID-19 Match. After volunteers and recipients sign up
on the site, Erin’s team uses Google Sheets to enter information and pair people up
based on ZIP codes.” This is a proof of what resource matching could be like and can
31
be done. Bottom line is, people matter, and anyone can help their community as long as
the correct tools and medium are provided. It doesn’t have to be state of the art
technology, and no need to reinvent the wheel when basic tools are within reach.
We have also seen private initiatives being carried out during the pandemic lockdown
period where people took up volunteerism work doing jobs like spraying disinfectant in
public areas, distributing healthcare necessities to the needy groups etc. Some
professionals in Malaysia had even gone to the effort of setting up a centralised hub
using a website that consolidates Personal Protection Equipments (PPE) requests from
the front-liners fighting pandemic and matching it with the right PPE contributors .
32
Would resource matching platforms be a viable solution for global resource
management especially during a global disaster?
What if it were to be done on a nation-state level where the purpose is to help those
who can’t even afford a decent living, such as those living under the poverty line during
normal periods? A Conditional Cash Transfer mechanism might be the answer. This
would involve technological implementation alongside policy adjustment. ABCDE The
World on a national level. Sufficient data related to healthcare must be effectively
collected first so that a bird eye’s view can be done to identify the challenges and bring
out the possible solutions.

Global Goals: Every Achievement Counts (Section 5: Resource Management)
Keeping people safe, alive and healthy every day, everywhere, in all sorts of conditions
is definitely not an easy task to accomplish. Initiatives such as the one by UNICEF to
make sure more of the world’s children are fed, vaccinated, educated and protected
through influencing laws, policies and customs to help protect children, can be further
studied and scaled to include more vulnerable groups.33
With the advancement of technologies, creation of entertaining products in the form of
writings, audio and visual presentation have become easier and more accessible to the
people. Technology empowers people with more freedom to express their thoughts and
showcase their creativity, and to reach out further in the marketplace. From the early
days of the internet where bloggers still rule the digital realm with articles filled only with
words and perhaps some photos, we have seen how the digital media took a leap in
today’s world filled with Youtubers who produce their own videos, Key Opinion Leaders
(KOL), social media influencers etc that is creating more and more varieties for the
industry. A blossoming scene in the entertainment landscape.
Again, it’s not going to be only human vs human with the help of technology, but it could
be human vs machine, or even machine vs machine in the very near future in this
entertainment space, similar to what we brought up earlier in the discussion of cyber
security related matters. The rise of the virtual kings and queens of social media,
computer generated influencer, singer and model, are "real" and are making a wave into
the industry. Now everybody can become a producer, broadcaster, a socmed
34
influencer, a person behind a deep fake character, and some of these “everybody” may
be a “virtual somebody”. What is real? How do you define real?
At this point of time, deep fake technology is picking up in momentum and it seems that
everybody not only be able to become a producer, but also with accessibility to make
deep fake videos now. The illustration by a computer scientist, Supasorn

modeling to create photorealistic fake videos of people synced to audio . The
36
astonishing talk and tech demo should lead us to think further about both the ethical
implications and the creative possibilities of this tech, and the steps that ought to be
taken to fight against its misuse. That's one of the reasons why we put in the Ethics
element as we explore the ABCDE The World movement earlier. How would, or should
people deal with fake videos, where famous people say things they've never said in real
life?
This brings us to another area of entertainment, things like esports, second life,
augmented reality and virtual reality etc. So, are we really in a game we call life that is
actually a creation of a higher intelligence that we will only find out the real answer once
we leave this world as we know it? Whatever it may be, keep the faith, stay strong, life
goes on. The whole thing about this life that we were blessed with could be the biggest
entertainment of all. We only die once, we live everyday! Be grateful and enjoy along
the way. Work hard, play harder, as they said.
We are seeing not only the efficiency in production of media, but also the speed and
scope where information spreads. In the early days, record companies sold singers
albums where there were normally one or two hit songs alongside other not so famous
songs in one Laser Disc (LD), cassette, or Compact Disc (CD) format as technology
progressed. This scenario might be hard to visualize for new generations as they grew
up over the cloud environment. Songs, MTVs, movie clips etc entertainment products
are being distributed over the digital world, in downloadable format and on-demand
basis. As such, there is no need to produce what seems to be less quality products just
to fully utilize the quota of a career medium, such as the cassette or CD. Let alone the
die hard fans, how many people really remember all the 100 songs by a singer sold
over 10 albums? Many of us would more than agree that the compilation album of a
singer’s all time hit song is worth more than the single piece album that comes with one
hit song and nine other songs that we seldom listen to.
The point here is with on-demand models and borderless reachout, the whole
entertainment industry can become more productive and effective as only quality
products will be given the attention and acknowledgement they deserve through open,
transparent, and competitive market force. Entertainers such as singers can produce a
single masterpiece and make it a global hit, while consumers will not be given additional
items (such as the other nine songs that come with a single album in the olden days)

anymore other than the art products they want to have. On-demand, over the air,

A Post-Scarcity Society
What powers the green energy? It doesn’t make sense if the source of so-called clean
energy still comes from the existing power generator that is not environmentally friendly.
If we can harness tech for massive efficiency then we are closer to that reality. Just
imagine really cheap renewable energy driving down the cost of everything, and
efficient distribution of wealth through emerging technologies.
We are most likely the generation blessed enough to witness a new monetary system in
our life span, though not that of a money-less society as portrayed in Star Trek: First
Contact (1996) yet during our time.
A new kind of trust will be implemented, as we are moving towards a moneyless society.
Our upcoming generations shall see a
moneylessfuture.
Captain Jean-Luc Picard: The economics of the future are somewhat different. You
see, money doesn't exist in the 24th century.
Lily Sloane: No money? You mean, you don't get paid?

our lives. We work to better ourselves and the rest of humanity. Actually, we're all like
yourself and Dr. Cochrane.

Global Goals: Every Achievement Counts (Section 5: Resource Management)

  • 1. GLOBAL GOALS Every Achievement Counts Social, Economic, Environment Development SECTION 5: RESOURCE MANAGEMENT
  • 2. Global Goals: Every Achievement Counts (Section 5: Resource Management) Section 5: Resource Management We have an abundance stream of resources available to sustain our living. It is how we organize and distribute these resources that matters. ABCDE The World is the way moving forward. In brief, ABCDE is building an AI driven, Blockchain based Cognitive resources management system powered by Data, Ethically. To enable and ensure shared prosperity, true wealth must be produced in the first place. Without resources, there can’t be distribution. Taking care of people should be the priority in cities preservation and development. In this section, we shall explore the availability of technology, the creation and distribution of true wealth, and the options we have marching towards our future. ● ABCDE The World? ● True Wealth: Food, Education, Energy, Shelter, Healthcare, Entertainment ● A Post-Scarcity Society http://www.thesdgs2030.com © 2020 BSYS Solution (M) Sdn Bhd. • 3. Global Goals: Every Achievement Counts (Section 5: Resource Management) “The world has enough for everyone's need, but not enough for everyone's greed.” ~ Mahatma Gandhi There had never been problems with the resources. The problems lie within distribution. How do we prove that statement? Can we have a systematic approach in building a better resource management system that is more transparent, fair and inclusive? The logic is simple. If the system is perfect, why do we still have poverty and hunger issues to be solved? Would someday in the future our great great grandchildren look back and wonder how their ancestors, us, even allow things such as poverty exist in our time? I had the chance to travel North and South throughout a private highway due to work arrangements. There is this stretch that spans some one kilometer along the journey that caught my attention. One the left side of that part of the highway, it is a very huge piece of land being installed with solar panels. One the right side, it is a very huge piece of land being turned into a housing area. The interesting part is, both developments started almost the same time, and it seems both projects occupy similar size of land, on the opposite side, looking at each other. What flashed through my mind was that wouldn’t it be better if both projects were to collaborate and work together where the solar panels could indeed be installed at the rooftop of those homes in the housing area, where energy is being provided on a self-sustain basis with potential to do trade on the surplus, if any. By having such an arrangement, we now free up a piece of land (that was originally being used just to install solar panels on the ground) as we moved the solar panels from the ground to the rooftops. This piece of land might be turned into another useful development such as for agriculture and food security purposes. “ABCDE The World” could be the answer where an AI driven, Blockchain based Cognitive resource management powered by Data, Ethically is to be developed and implemented into future cities, in six key areas where true wealth has always been produced - food, energy, education, shelter, healthcare, entertainment, as we strategically put people, process, and technology in place. “You never change things by fighting against the existing reality. To change something, build a new model that makes the old model obsolete.” ~ Buckminster Fuller http://www.thesdgs2030.com © 2020 BSYS Solution (M) Sdn Bhd. All Rights Reserved.
  • 4. Global Goals: Every Achievement Counts (Section 5: Resource Management) This ABCDE The World is not a new or wild idea anymore as Toyota is showing the world a living laboratory, a prototype town of the future through its Woven City initiative. The commercial introduction is quite enticing, and there is definitely something for everyone to look upon on the speech delivered by Toyota’s President and CEO Akio Toyoda during CES 2020 . 1 We live in a world with abundant resources. It could be the system, the methods or the tools that are limiting our access to these resources. Take the music industry as an example. Throughout time, people produce music and songs, all over the world. Yet, the delivery medium took quite a transformational journey over a period of time to reach here today, as shown below: Cassette -> CD -> DVD -> USB Drive -> Cloud Storage Sharing economy, such as the AirBnB or OYO model when it comes to shelter, Uber, Grab, or GoJek when it comes to transportation, Freelancer.com or Guru.com when it comes to human resources, had proof that with the help of technology, it is not only be able to shorten a product or a service’s time to market and widen its reach out, but also possible to reorganize social resources that are either idle or to be wasted into a more effective usage. ABCDE The World? Emerging tech plays a vital role in shaping our future. Each and every single technology has its niche to assist us in building a better world. No single tech works alone and only by knitting relevant and related technologies together properly that we are able to augment the future we ought to have. Nonetheless, to make things simpler and easier to be comprehended by the masses, four key technology clusters strongly built on a single base have been identified and should be made into a collective global movement that we coined ABCDE The World. Using the phrase “ABCDE The World” or hashtag “#ABCDETheWorld” is to simplify what could have been a very complicated process and complex integration in augmenting the desirable future the majority of us would like to have. Having a short 1 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NME7pGh-7rk http://www.thesdgs2030.com © 2020 BSYS Solution (M) Sdn Bhd. All Rights Reserved.
  • 5. Global Goals: Every Achievement Counts (Section 5: Resource Management) and precise movement call to action can ensure easy comprehension of the idea for the masses. The reason behind is that in terms of literacy, most people who speak or use English would have known all the alphabets from A to Z, at least the first few of them if not all 26 alphabets, just like how we all started our numeracy with 123. The tagline could reach out to children young enough who had just started to learn the alphabets. The initial four letters of “ABCDE” in the phrase represents the technology or ideas behind each word. A for Artificial Intelligence, B for Blockchain, C for Connectivity, and D for Data. The E for Ethics puts the human touch and morality to the tagline. Without ethics, things may go the unwanted path, especially when it purely involves math and logic. However, it is quite debatable on the flexibility or the room for choices to be made. Note also the wider scope that Connectivity brings. It is a larger set of technology or concept which is more inclusive than to merely use any tech vocabulary that starts with the capital C. For instance, keywords such as Cloud Computing or Cybersecurity can be architected as a subset of Connectivity. The Internet of Things (IoT), and the Internet of Everything by themselves have the main purpose of actualizing connectivity. Let’s get into each and every alphabet of the phrase in detail, as what is being illustrated in Image 5.1. Image 5.1 ABCDE The World http://www.thesdgs2030.com © 2020 BSYS Solution (M) Sdn Bhd. • 6. Global Goals: Every Achievement Counts (Section 5: Resource Management) A for Artificial Intelligence (AI). While many may have their own sets of definition for AI, it is a field of computer science that puts intelligence into machines. AI provides speed, enables the information processing scale and depth. To illustrate, let’s use fact finding as an example. If we were given a task to find out how many times the word “data” is being used in a 200 pages physical book, it is achievable even without a computer. It is just a matter of time for us to complete the task. Digitization turns that printed book into a softcopy, and the “find and replace” feature in any standard editorial software or “find” feature in any standard reading software that comes with it accomplishes the task in split second. What if the number of books that is in our research bucket comes in hundreds, even thousands? And the type of research material not only comes in terms of text format, but also in the form of images, audio, and even video files? To take it further beyond extracting information (data mining), analysing and understanding those information, thus taking appropriate reactions based on what is being presented and understood is another challenge. AI assists us in achieving that. It complements us in terms of speed, accuracy and efficiency. As long as energy is supplied, AI doesn’t get tired or bored, as human beings do, and most likely will. B for Blockchain, a technology that promises transparency, traceability, and immutability. The key is decentralization and security, besides privacy and empowerment. In a way, blockchain technology solved the digital dilemma of issuing digital money. Prior to the existence of Blockchain as we know it, it is difficult to have a perfect digital money due to the characteristic of digital content which is easy to duplicate, in mass volume, with identical quality in split second. Thus, the first killer app we see in this space is the cryptocurrency we all know as bitcoin. However, this is just the tip of the iceberg. There is more to the technology. Blockchain facilitate the transfer of value. There is a saying that what the World Wide Web did to the media industry is what blockchain technology is going to do to the banking or finance industry as we know it. What problems are blockchain solving? The first killer apps it brings is digital currency, which is also known as cryptocurrency. The technology promises a better financial ecosystem through a more inclusive, fairer ecosystem, as it brings banking to the unbanked and underbanked. The first widely known blockchain application - Bitcoin - is http://www.thesdgs2030.com © 2020 BSYS Solution (M) Sdn Bhd. All Rights Reserved.
  • 7. Global Goals: Every Achievement Counts (Section 5: Resource Management) the starting point to provide an alternative to the fiat-based financial system. Bitcoin is the proof of concept for what is believed to be the internet of money. While we have yet to see a major adoption for blockchain technology in 2020, the shift is happening as Millennials and Generation Z are taking control of what they’re doing . 2 There are three major shifts that will lead to worldwide blockchain adoption, which include: ● a shift from the mere physical world to a hybrid world where physical world and digital space co-exist and somehow interlinked, ● a shift away from centralized governing bodies to a more people-centric, community based governance system, and ● a shift from the centralized financial system into a decentralized economy. These shifts are reshaping our world, in which individuals are empowered to control their own future, not having to rely on a centralized third party. Take note that Blockchain is only the tip of the iceberg. If you just look at the application of money, you’re missing the point. There are more possibilities and wonders we can do with the technology, and the solutions will ripple out to other sectors that are beyond finance. Quoted from Andreas Antonopoulos speech in September 2016, “You can take the language, the building blocks of this platform and use them to construct other languages that communicate value. Tokens. Reward points. Brand loyalty coins. Some will have economic use, some will simply be expressions of loyalty, affiliation, they will represent items in the physical world. The title for a house. The controlling key for a car that can be transferred from one owner to another, and five seconds later that owner can step into the car and drive away, because the car can validate the new standard of ownership. We cannot yet imagine what applications we’re going to build around this.”3 If history were to repeat itself, Blockchain phenomena is one of such events that we witnessed happened in such a short period. It is likened to the internet, all over again. Smart money is just the beginning, there are things like smart contracts, smart energy, 4 smart assets etc coming into the picture of our daily life. One of the solutions blockchain 4 https://www.slideshare.net/howtze/blockchain-insider-chapter-3-smart-money 3 Transcript at https://steemit.com/bitcoin/@raybrown/introduction-to-bitcoin-sept-2016-speech-by-andreas-antonopoulos 2 Today’s Shifting Gears Driving Tomorrow’s Mass Crypto Adoption https://cointelegraph.com/news/todays-shifting-gears-driving-tomorrows-mass-crypto-adoption http://www.thesdgs2030.com © 2020 BSYS Solution (M) Sdn Bhd. • 8. Global Goals: Every Achievement Counts (Section 5: Resource Management) technology is bringing is the introduction of non-fungible tokens which could change the way we own things . 5 An item that is fungible is interchangeable with another identical item. For instance, the one dollar notes are all worth the same. However, the non-fungible works differently in a way where identifying information is embedded, making each non-fungible item completely unique. Think of it like the air ticket or movie pass, though the general information could be the same, the seat number for each ticket is different. Thus, non-fungible tokens are ideal for recording and storing the ownership of digital items that could be of value, such as arts, collectibles etc. In other words, non-fungible tokens have been revolutionizing the ownership of tokenized intellectual property and real estates. Blockchain technology provides a new way of creating, storing, and even transferring of Digital IDs. Yet, the technology is still at the infancy stage and has quite some challenges to overcome though it had been known to the people since nearly 10 years ago. These would not only be a technology problem where innovation and interoperability is still much needed, but also a problem in governance, data ownership and commercial business models in terms of how they incentivize ecosystem stakeholders to collaborate with each other. As written by Bart Wyatt in his Cointelegraph’s column, “Blockchain can bring transparency, security, new incentive models and ownership of data to the world at a time when these traits are desperately needed. That promise will be difficult to achieve until blockchains can communicate and cooperate with each other. To achieve this, developers, companies and hobbyists alike must be able to leverage every platform without being locked into one simply because the platform developers are not working together.”6 While some schools of thoughts would intentionally separate blockchain into the technology and the financial part, they are somehow interrelated. By default, in the case of bitcoin, both characteristics exist in one single entity. The programmable money part of it is what makes this technology interesting and promising in solving the sustainable development challenges. We will look into this when we go further into the Cryptocurrency discussion shortly in upcoming paragraphs. Prior to that, we need to look into the bigger C first. 6 Why Interoperability Is the Key to Future Innovation and Adoption https://cointelegraph.com/news/why-interoperability-is-the-key-to-future-innovation-and-adoption 5 Nonfungible Tokens Could Change the Way We Own Things https://cointelegraph.com/news/nonfungible-tokens-could-change-the-way-we-own-things http://www.thesdgs2030.com © 2020 BSYS Solution (M) Sdn Bhd. • 9. Global Goals: Every Achievement Counts (Section 5: Resource Management) There is a limitation for us human beings in extracting information from a vast amount of input and multiple streams of sources. While AI is good at processing the data, and Blockchain ensures integrity, how would the gathering of data from sources be done? A well connected computer system will definitely help. This brings us to C for Connectivity. It was appropriated from a few words starting with the capital C as we simplified the suggested movement to ABCDE The World. We found a common characteristic when we talk about Cloud Computing, Cyber security, Cryptocurrency, Capitalism where all of them coincidently facilitate connections. Remember that content + connection in the previous chapter? This will be a more advanced and complex development compared to simply media perspective. Let’s start with Cloud Computing. Digitization is about moving the paper based info into the digital world, or computerization as we called it. It is simple and straightforward, converting whatever in the real world into the digital form so it can be managed and processed in a more effective way. Digital transformation is about how organizations work as they move into the virtual world. Forget about the standalone PC or supercomputer, the pre-internet era. Everything is being connected and the number of nodes is growing exponentially as we pass the tipping point with the Internet of Things. And now, the Internet of Everything. Online, on cloud, on chain. Getting online is just the beginning of being connected. Online could be as simple as having a peer to peer connection for conversation or for the transfer of value. For example, the use of instant messaging to keep in touch or a peer-to-peer digital currency wallet to transfer money between two parties. Getting online has happened since the beginning of the internet. In the early days of hosting files on a remote computer, it could be only a single server or a setup with one server and a few redundant servers at a remote site for access over the internet. There might be different types of servers setup for different services, such as web server, file server, database server etc. A hosting service might consist of several server functionalities sold in a package deal. As technology advances, we now have cloud computing, which is the on-demand availability of computer system resources, especially data storage and computing power, without direct active management by the user. On-demand availability without direct active management by the user makes computer system resource management much easier and more effective. http://www.thesdgs2030.com © 2020 BSYS Solution (M) Sdn Bhd. • 10. Global Goals: Every Achievement Counts (Section 5: Resource Management) From a technical point of view, cloud computing is the practice of using a network of remote servers hosted on the Internet to store, manage, and process data . It is the 7 delivery of computing services—including servers, storage, databases, networking, software, analytics, and intelligence—over the Internet (“the cloud”) to offer faster innovation, flexible resources, and economies of scale . Rather than a fixed quota of 8 resource allocation, there is a flexibility in allocating related resources among users, upon on-demand and availability basis. From the business perspective, you typically pay only for cloud services that you use, thus helping you to lower your operating costs, run your infrastructure more efficiently, and scale as your business needs change. The obvious difference between conventional hosting model and cloud computing is the monthly or annual subscription model versus the pay as you use model. Similar to that of electricity or water usage billing. Some buffers in the budgeting might be required in such an arrangement as the figures fluctuate over time. While cloud computing works in a more centralized mode, most of the blockchain works in a decentralized model based on Satoshi Nakamoto’s initial idea of coming up with a decentralized form of digital money. Bitcoin, the first known blockchain to the mass, is designed to be A Peer-to-Peer Electronic Cash System , which works on a 9 decentralized network. Thus, there is this phrase on chain. Whether it is on cloud or on chain, from a data perspective, it is still a way to keep records and info. The idea is to better manage our data resources, securely. In terms of cyber security, 24/7 connection brings 24/7 security risk. That’s a package deal. A strong, stable and secure connection is important because it can provide real-time analytics which in turn enables real-time security. The need to protect people and assets has never been greater, especially given the pandemic outbreak in 2020 as an early warning towards the unknown future. Besides the traditional server hacking and other internet security breach activities, facility and security staff are facing new mandates - such as preventing crowding, controlling building access, and conducting 9 https://bitcoin.org/bitcoin.pdf 8 https://azure.microsoft.com/en-us/overview/what-is-cloud-computing/ 7 https://www.dictionary.com/browse/cloud-computing http://www.thesdgs2030.com © 2020 BSYS Solution (M) Sdn Bhd. • 11. Global Goals: Every Achievement Counts (Section 5: Resource Management) health screenings . Everybody must equip themselves with sufficient tech knowledge to 10 catch up with the global progress. It is worth noting that cyber security has much to do with human behavior as well. Small little things like having a strong password, do not disclose too much personal information in digital open space (just like how people will not disclose too much privacy in the real world’s public area), be very well aware of the digital footprint etc. will have big impact or consequences to the data privacy or digital assets that are supposed to be well kept and protected. Stay safe, stay strong and be very alert, just as how you fight a pandemic or virus threat. The cyber security threat is always there. It exists 24/7 as long as you are on the grid. As we enlarge the scope to a smart city which involves daily routine of the people, cyber security will become even more important and crucial as we are not only talking about data breach but also hijacking of remote control devices that could be fatal to human life. Imagine a future city where vehicles are highly connected and transporting people daily within the city. What may happen if any of the vehicles, or even a single crucial component of a vehicle being compromised? The system must be well protected and smart enough to identify not only threat, but ideally potential threat so appropriate measures or relevant reactions could be carried out before accidents happen. If you happen to have a platform that guarantees certain trust functions, one very useful application for that is to build a currency, and a payment network. This brought us to cryptocurrency, a programmable money. The biggest breakthrough going on chain is the ability to program our money. Money can now have more functionalities rather than being just a medium of transfer, a store of value, or a unit of accounting. "We are seeing the digital world come at us more quickly than we could have imagined – and UNICEF must be able to use all of the tools of this new world to help children today and tomorrow. The transfer of these funds – to eight companies in seven countries around the world – took less than 20 minutes and cost us less than $20. Almost instant global movement of value, fees of less than 0.00009% of the total amount transferred, and real-time transparency for our donors and supporters are the types of tools we are excited about.” - Chris Fabian, UNICEF Ventures co-lead . 11 11 https://cointelegraph.com/news/unicef-cryptocurrency-fund-makes-its-largest-ever-investment 10 https://www.insight.tech/smart-cities-public-sector/real-time-analytics-drives-real-time-security http://www.thesdgs2030.com © 2020 BSYS Solution (M) Sdn Bhd. • 12. Global Goals: Every Achievement Counts (Section 5: Resource Management) Looking at the maturity of Bitcoin and other major cryptocurrencies, central banks and governments around the world are playing the catch up game. Majority of the conventional financial system powers are formulating the Central Bank-issued Digital Currency (CBDC), a tamed beast to the benefits of the power house, to ensure system security and stability for the stakeholders. What the people innovate, the states eventually appropriates. Can money function more than just money? Indeed, it can and it will, because we now have programmable money. Money can put on different hats and function accordingly, based on the environment they are in, or the situation they are put into. The question should not be whether I am allowed to do it or not, but rather how can I make this happen. It is good that we have the direction of coming up with a technical and policy framework for programmable money first. Implementation wise, it is do-able technically due to its programmable nature. Take the analogy of a simplified illustration of daily life of a working male adult: Early morning as he steps into the office, he will play the role as an employee of the company, where his action will be bound by company rules and (common) work culture. After office hours, as he transits back from work to home, he would be bound by social etiquette and city rules along the way. At home, he could be playing the role of a husband, and a father to his children, where family values play the major factor defining the activities he could be carrying.12 Money as we know it is evolving. It now can be something smarter as we put life into it. Rather than just a piece of paper or a string of numbers to facilitate trades, the functionality of being the medium of exchange can now be enhanced and upgraded machines or software alike form, because it can be programmed. That is going to be very enticing and exciting. D for Data. We have heard enough of the phrase “Data is new oil”. What’s the difference between Data and crude oil as we know it? We can look at it from a few perspectives - the form they exist, the way they were being produced, the quantity and the market value. 12 https://www.slideshare.net/howtze/blockchain-insider-chapter-3-smart-money http://www.thesdgs2030.com © 2020 BSYS Solution (M) Sdn Bhd. All Rights Reserved.
  • 13. Global Goals: Every Achievement Counts (Section 5: Resource Management) First of all, crude oil is physical. We can see it, touch it, and use it in the real world. Data in the digital format is not touchable, and they exist only in the virtual world. The only way we “see” the data is through the display screen of devices such as a desktop, a mobile phone or future smart devices. Secondly, it may take up to millions of years in order for crude oil to be formed. It may take quite some time to find, extract and process the commodity so that it can be consumed finally at the consumer end. The creation of digital content may happen in just a click, such as pressing the button on our smart phone to take a beautiful photo. As such, it is easy to come to the point that crude oil will become less and less as we consume due to the long formation period and fast consumption speed. But data is only going to be more and more due to the easy creation and not much storage space and housekeeping needed. Let’s take a simple challenge here, can you maintain the number of photos in your mobile phone for a long period without transferring them out to another storage area? What about the daily messages that happen over your communication apps? Are you going to delete off everything on a daily or periodic basis? So, based on supply and demand theory, and the market mechanism as we know it, the price of crude oil may be fluctuating over time, but data would be relatively cheap compared to crude oil. Take note that relatively cheap is only from the production perspective, which doesn’t equate to no value. Table below summarizes the points as discussed thus far: Table 5.1 Crude Oil VS Data Crude Oil Data (Digital) Appearance Physical Virtual Formation Millions of year Fast, can be split second Scarcity Reduced in quantity as consumed Ever increasing in size Price Fluctuates Relatively cheap There must be some meaning behind when people say “Data is new oil”. It is the value data may generate and provide. Digitization is just the first step towards transformation. It has to be complemented by other related and relevant business processes. Only when the conversion of written data into digital format and a certain level of business http://www.thesdgs2030.com © 2020 BSYS Solution (M) Sdn Bhd. All Rights Reserved.
  • 14. Global Goals: Every Achievement Counts (Section 5: Resource Management) process being revamped and enhanced, a digital transformation can be actualized and efficiency can be scaled. Data is valuable in the sense that it does not only provide information, but valuable insights. When data is properly managed and processed, it gives us more untold, hidden messages behind the figures. Data also can be used as a form of currency. It can be a medium of exchange. This is not something new. For instance, the free use of social media is being paid by the privacy and information created by the users who took up the “free lunch”. Remember the golden advice of “sometimes the most expensive thing comes under the wrapping of a free tag”. You might not be paying in terms of monetary deal, but you could be paying with something else rather than money. This may cost more, when you give it a deeper thought. In summary, data provides us not only informational value but also transactional value. Something that couldn’t be reached using the conventional approach. "If preservation of humanity is the objective, the existence of pure human race is not compulsory. After all, humanity is illusive. it is not biologically bound either. Humanity can exist in machines." ~ Max Tegmark 13 E for Ethics . According to Max Tegmark in his book “Life 3.0, Being Human In The Age 14 of Artificial Intelligence”, three most likely future that we might anticipate as we keep improving our AI would be: 15 ● The existence of “Friendly AI” where we live well with it, or ● AIs perceived as worthy “descendants,” replacing us and sharing our values etc., or ● Worst, where AIs become conquerors. 15 Page 46, Figure 1.6: Which AI questions are interesting depends on how advanced AI gets and which branch our future takes. 14 https://venturebeat.com/2020/05/06/how-microsoft-openai-and-oecd-are-putting-ai-ethics-principles-into-p ractice/ 13 Life 3.0 Being Human In The Age of Artificial Intelligence, Max Tegmark http://www.thesdgs2030.com © 2020 BSYS Solution (M) Sdn Bhd. Conversation with wise people and experienced experts also give me lots of great and valuable input on my works. Image above just to show how things had always been there waiting for us to think, relate and come out with that “aha!” moment, or eureka, so to speak. It was a morning thought that somehow sparked into my mind how ABCDE The World can be further detailed. These books had always been with me for quite some time.Yet it took me quite a while to see how they relate in what I am up to, and want to be part of. While Life 3.0 on AI, The Age of Cryptocurrency on Blockchain, and Reinventing Capitalism in the Age of Big Data is quite straightforward for what they meant, the Chinese reference, an introductory to the I Ching or Yi Jing, is leading to another vast http://www.thesdgs2030.com © 2020 BSYS Solution (M) Sdn Bhd. The I Ching or Yi Jing, which is usually translated as Book of Changes or Classic of Changes, is an ancient Chinese divination text and among the oldest of the Chinese classics . There is 16 definitely a universe of wisdom in this classic masterpiece, and the book shown in the image is only the door opening part leading into that vast, mysterious world, which might have all the answers we had always been looking for. Putting these four books together, the first puzzle seems complete. The power to relate plays an important role here. It is how tech and the human interaction is finally woven 17 into a stable existence that matters, of which we shall explore further in the next two chapters in this section. Dealing with AI will be one of the most interesting conversations of our time. The threat of Cyber warfare has become more challenging than ever before. Instead of human vs human, we now also face scenarios where human vs computer, and even computer vs computer. While technology brings efficiency, it’s a double edge sword. History proves that tools have always been mis-used for purposes out of their original intention. Since we are the first creator of advanced computer systems, it is really up to us to set things right in the very beginning, as much as we can, before it goes out of control. The phrase first creator is being used here because there is no guarantee that super smart machines will someday be able to produce a more advanced breed of lifeform on this planet. Welcome to the most important conversation of our time. Being a science stream student exposed to Physics, Biology, Chemistry, and Add Maths, then graduated as a Computer Engineer where the final year thesis is a primitive Enterprise Resource Planning System written in Java Language (with help from brilliant coursemates), it is still quite challenging to understand what was written in the book by Max Tegmark. Yet, this has been one of the most interesting books to be explored to date. What can be controlled, is ought to be controlled, and will be controlled. To build a powerful AI system, emulate our brain, and don't forget the Ethics part of it. 17 http://socialenterpriseguide.com/the-power-to-relate/ 16 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/I_Ching http://www.thesdgs2030.com © 2020 BSYS Solution (M) Sdn Bhd. • 17. Global Goals: Every Achievement Counts (Section 5: Resource Management) True Wealth: Food, Education, Energy, Shelter, Healthcare, Entertainment Livelihood of human beings are centered around six core categories. Civilization starts when we stop moving, from nomad to settlement. We need a place to shelter so we can keep living and progress forward with our achievements. Food is the non-negotiable survival need as it powers our biological appearance. Without health, everything else is meaningless. Energy powers up most of the facilities and utilities we need. Education makes us literate and enables legacy for continual survival of human beings as a species on this planet. Last but not least, entertainment puts a balance into our life. Proper work and rest routine to keep us afresh. Taking the first letter from each category, we got F.E.E.S.H.E. which produces true wealth. What is wealth? How do you define wealth? From a very personal perspective, it could be a measure of a person's ability to survive so many days forward. How many days can you survive without any income from now onwards? Many people and businesses had been given the test on this during the pandemic lockdown in 2020. From a higher perspective, wealth is the product of energy times intelligence: energy turned into artifacts that advantage human life. Whatever the mind can perceive and believe, it can be achieved. “I find man utterly unaware of what his wealth is or his fundamental capability is. He says time and again, "We can't afford it." For instance, we are saying now that we can't afford to do anything about pollution but after the costs of not doing something about pollution have multiplied many fold beyond what it would cost to correct it now, we will spend many fold what it would cost us now to correct it.” ~ R. Buckminster Fuller Controlled time is our true wealth. When leaders realize that automation can multiply man's wealth far more rapidly than it is multiplying at present and that automation will leave all men free to search and research, we will have met a tipping point in our collaborative human progress, to excel further into a more promising future to all mankind. The focus should not be to increase jobs, but to multiply the wealth and to expand the numbers benefited by the wealth at the swiftest possible rate. It doesn't take a computer to tell you that it will save both the Universe and humanity trillions of dollars a day to pay them handsomely to stay at home.” ~ R. Buckminster Fuller This leads to the idea of Universal Basic Income (UBI), a guaranteed payment for the people to provide enough to cover the basic cost of living. We explored UBI as we discussed it in the Sustainable Development section. Now, let’s explore the areas where true wealth can be produced, so that we have enough to provide, regardless of situation. What does produce true wealth? Food, Education, Energy, Shelter, Healthcare, Entertainment. Image 5.3 True Wealth “Give them food and entertainment, and there won’t be riot.” Food, and perhaps entertainment, the most immediate or base requirements of a populace, had been very important in the political context. • 19. Global Goals: Every Achievement Counts (Section 5: Resource Management) the most important concerns and priority to any government and community in the world. In some countries, during the pandemic lock down, we had seen how some food resources, especially fruits and vegetables in certain areas needed to be destroyed or thrown away due to transportation issues, such as roadblocks or confinements. While in certain areas far away from these food sources, there had been dire needs just to feed the ones who suddenly fell into a shortage of consumable food, caused by the same logistic challenges. To ensure a sustainable food supply and closing the gap of food production and distribution between rural and urban areas, specifically crowded cities, we had seen technologies which include but not limited to vertical farming or urban farming etc being implemented in places such as rooftops and usable areas of high rise buildings. New technologies such as IoT and automation brought by Industrial Revolution 4.0 (IR4) have made food production and distribution more timely and efficient as well. Food chains, from farm to table, from production to processing, from distribution to consumers, have not only been made more transparent, but also fairer in terms of revenue and profit distribution thanks to traceability and transparency that technology brings. The supply chain and distribution channels of food is important as it affects the healthiness and well-being of the consumers. True wealth from the food perspective should not be limited to the monetary or economic perspective of it, but also the social side and environmental impact of it. As we produce our food, are we giving enough attention to preserve the environment while making rooms for food production? Are we handling well any harmful particles as we process our food, as far as the factory end and as close as our kitchen? With more than a quarter of a billion people potentially at the brink of starvation, swift action needs to be taken to provide food and humanitarian relief to the most at-risk regions. The challenge has been well addressed in United Nations Sustainable 19 Development Goals 2, where zero hunger has been set as the ultimate aim to feed the people around the world. A profound change of the global food and agriculture system is needed if we are to nourish the entire world citizens. 19 https://www.un.org/sustainabledevelopment/hunger/ http://www.thesdgs2030.com © 2020 BSYS Solution (M) Sdn Bhd. • 20. Global Goals: Every Achievement Counts (Section 5: Resource Management) Food security through the increasing agricultural productivity and sustainable food production are crucial not only to help alleviate the perils of hunger, but also to ensure global stability. Shared prosperity should start from food, the very essential biological needs of every human being. "Yesterday I was clever, so I wanted to change the world. Today I am wise, so I am changing myself." ~ Rumi. For things to change, first I must change. When I change, the world changes. You can't change what's going on around you until you start changing what's going on within you. Change doesn't happen by chance, it happens by choices we make. In order for better choices be made, seeding through education is one proven method since our existence as a species on this planet. “Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.” ~ Nelson Mandela Obtaining a quality education is the foundation to creating sustainable development, because education enables upward socioeconomic mobility and is a key to escaping poverty. In addition to improving quality of life, access to inclusive education can help equip locals with the tools required to develop innovative solutions to the world’s greatest problems. However, quality and inclusive education come with a price tag. 20 “If you think education is expensive, try ignorance.” ~ Derek Bok One way to have education resources intact is the wise, optimized or perhaps the recycle use of related materials. For instance, the case where garbage collectors open a library with abandoned books in Ankara, Turkey. As reported by CNN, the garbage men gathered forsaken books for months and put it into a library meant only for employees and their families. Residents began donating books directly as word of the collection spread. When the collection grew and interest spread throughout the community, the library was eventually opened to the public.21 21 https://edition.cnn.com/2018/01/15/europe/garbage-collectors-open-library-with-abandoned-books/index.h tml 20 https://www.un.org/sustainabledevelopment/education/ http://www.thesdgs2030.com © 2020 BSYS Solution (M) Sdn Bhd. • 21. Global Goals: Every Achievement Counts (Section 5: Resource Management) Above is just one of many examples of how we never lack resources but the problem with the distribution of it. Most of the resources we are blessed with were abandoned or forsaken, while they could and should be put to better use. We need more people like the garbage collectors in Turkey around the world to have that awareness and who are willing to take the initiatives to better allocate our resources. From resources to beneficiaries, inclusive education is something not to be ignored. Goal 4 of the SDGs is set to ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all. Education is the foundation of a child’s 22 future and it can take any form, be it through the traditional method that human beings had been using for centuries, a systematic classroom style or self-learning through an educational platform in the digital world etc, as long as the purpose is achieved. Every child deserves a chance to an education to reach their fullest potential.23 "Educating the mind without educating the heart is no education at all." ~ Aristotle Education should not be focused only on living skills. While it is important to know the basics as in read, write, and calculate, it is also important to have the balance from the psychological and soul searching part of it. Personally, I think it is safe to say that our existence is not of any coincidence. While many may have believed that we are left with no options if things were predestined, how sure we are that these are not the choices we made prior to us taking the human form and exist in this world as we know and aware of? Skillsets and mindsets are both equally important. “If you want to find the secrets of the universe, think in terms of energy, frequency and vibration.” ~ Nikola Tesla Nikola Tesla, known for his idea of free electricity for all, stated that all people everywhere should have free energy sources; electric power is everywhere, present in unlimited quantities, and can drive the world's machinery without the need for coal, oil, or gas. Reality is, it could be easier said than done. Just like E equals to MC square, energy takes the path from one form to another, yet it doesn’t appear or vanish just like that. Costs involved in setting up our energy sources. Even to transform the free solar from the sun into usable electricity that powers our daily life involves costings such as 23 https://unicef.my/donations/a-fair-chance 22 https://www.globalgoals.org/4-quality-education http://www.thesdgs2030.com © 2020 BSYS Solution (M) Sdn Bhd. If you are getting anything for free, it might be just that you are not paying it directly, but somehow it gets paid indirectly. Someone has to foot the bill someday somehow. When economic values exist in something that is needed and essential to our daily life, wealth can be produced. Take the case of direct sunlight as not just an energy source, but how wealth can be generated through the indirect use of it. The “garden city” is a vision that was introduced on 11 May 1967 by then Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew to transform Singapore into a city with abundant lush greenery and a clean environment in order to make life more pleasant for the people. Singapore has 24 no natural resources to fall back on, nor nature wonders that can make it a natural tourism spot like most of it surrounding countries. There is a story behind this development. It was in 1972 that the tourism board sent a report to the then Prime Minister of Singapore stating that besides sunlight throughout the year, nothing was there in the small island country that was able to turn it into a tourism hotspot. Of which, the president replied, “What else do you need? It’s the sunlight! Sunlight is all we need!” As long as the sun still shines, rest assured energy will always be around. And when 25 you start to count your blessings, miracles happen. “Be careful not to let the things that you don't have to blindfold you from noticing all the blessings in your life.” ~ Edmond Mbiaka The point to ponder here is that we have an abundance stream of resources available to sustain our living. It is how we organize and distribute these resources that matters. In terms of energy, the Global Energy Grid is one of the most exciting and laudable initiatives to be further explored. Global Energy Grid was dubbed the World Game's26 Highest Priority by Dr. R. Buckminster Fuller. The Global Energy Network Institute (GENI) , which was founded in 1986 by Peter Meisen to investigate the idea of Dr. R. 27 Buckminster Fuller, comes with a mission to accelerate the attainment of optimal, ecologically sustainable energy solutions in the shortest possible time for the peace, health and prosperity of all. 27 http://www.geni.org/index.html 26 https://www.bfi.org/about-fuller/big-ideas/world-game 25 https://www.jianshu.com/p/5097c869244e 24 http://eresources.nlb.gov.sg/history/events/a7fac49f-9c96-4030-8709-ce160c58d15c#1 http://www.thesdgs2030.com © 2020 BSYS Solution (M) Sdn Bhd. • 23. Global Goals: Every Achievement Counts (Section 5: Resource Management) Besides the GENI initiatives, other private collaboration in the emerging tech sector is also gaining traction in providing a more effective energy distribution system. For instance, the telecommunications giant Vodafone, which is a global leader in internet-of-things (IoT) with over 100 million connections worldwide, has partnered with blockchain startup Energy Web (EWT) to connect "billions" of distributed energy generating assets via IoT and distributed ledger technology (DLT). At time of writing, work in progress includes looking at renewable and distributed assets (such as wind turbines, batteries, heat pumps, solar panels etc) to be integrated with energy grids safely and efficiently, inspired by the way that telecom operators securely identify mobile phones using SIM cards for grids to identify and track distributed energy sources.28 There is a need for convergence of multiple sectors in making the energy transition happen, and it is happening not only within the energy sector itself, but also cross industries among automotive, telecoms, and even finance. The Honda and General Motors collaboration in smart grid and electric car research is one of the many ongoing works which see Blockchain emerges as a potential key to Electric Vehicles stabilizing power supplies. The concept of Peer-to-Peer Energy trading has also been tested in 29 30 countries like India, Thailand, and Australia, with the backing of Blockchain technology provided by companies like Power Ledger. It’s just a matter of cross-countries energy trading to happen over time, as that would remain a geopolitical challenge, not a technical one. A global electric energy grid linking the renewable energy resources around the world should be made the number one priority to solve many of the world's most pressing problems. This would reduce global pollution, world hunger, population growth, and increase living standards, international trade, cooperation and world peace. Energy powers the world. From early hunting days where human beings seek shelter in caves, to farming era where communities were built and live in villages alike settings, to modern days urbanization, we have come a long way in providing a safe place to stay for our peers and fellow human beings. Safety and stability is what we seek behind the shelters. A place we call home. • 24. Global Goals: Every Achievement Counts (Section 5: Resource Management) choices when it comes to a staying place, most are blessed enough to have at least the basics such as a roof over the head and food in the refrigerator. How do we ensure enough living space for every citizen on this planet? How do we effectively manage our resources so supply and demand are well balanced? We had seen enough abandoned real estate development projects and untaken spaces everywhere yet some are still left living around as tramp. There was this experience in a small town called Sungai Jawi in Penang, Malaysia, where a friend of mine shared with me the model how a new housing project just opposite his village was being developed. It was still an underdeveloped area back then, nearly 30 years ago. A real estate developer decided to provide a modern, brick-and-mortar house to the villagers nearby who still lived in wooden houses back then. The way he was doing the development was to collect enough takers for the new houses first, before he committed and started the development process, as he built the houses on a row by row basis, rather than a one time development of a full housing area comprising a hundred units of houses. As such, the development ensured that only houses that got confirmed buyers were built over controlled time, and no single resource was being wasted by building houses and waiting for people to come and buy, which is way more risky and wasting resources. Build on demand is one way to effectively manage the construction resources. Worth noting is the tiny house movement, which inspires many people to live a simple and minimalist life. It isn't necessarily about sacrifice. One of the big ideas supporting the tiny house movement is freedom. It’s not just about financial concerns, it’s way beyond. It involves environmental concerns, and people’s desire for more time. Imagine the time and resources it takes to manage and maintain a bigger space where only a few people live in it. Remember that the world has enough for everyone's needs, but not everyone's greed. We had been discussing the construction and building side of shelters. What about the excessive stocks or untaken units we have to date scattered all around the world? It’s quite similar to the food resources distribution scenario, just that the frequency of moving is not as fast as what food distribution is, where food is being moved around to be consumed on a daily basis. Real estates mostly stick to a place, it is people that are moving in and out. Applications based on time sharing and resource repurpose concepts have proven to be one good solution in reactivating idle properties, such as co-working space, room http://www.thesdgs2030.com © 2020 BSYS Solution (M) Sdn Bhd. We have seen some efforts trying to convert some of the hotels into old folks homes or orphanage shelters, those smaller scale operators rather than bigger hotel chains. Reuse, repurpose is a way out to save underutilized shelters. Policy must be able to catch up to shorten the time to market when we reallocate the resources to a better use when things don't go as planned. Providing resources and solutions for people to live off the grid is an alternative to urbanization. Note that living off-grid means living autonomously without reliance on a utility for power. Thus, alternative power options like solar or wind energy might be required. It may be ideal for rural locations where there is a lack of reliable grid access. People might find it fancy and interesting to live in places like a tree house, occasionally. But will they, or you adapt to a longer period living off-the-grid? Live, learn, work, play. It doesn’t have to be in a highly urbanized cityscape. Healthcare is not only about healing the sick but also about the well-being of everybody. While prevention is always better than cure, accidents happen. Somehow, complementarity of nutrition and pharmacology exists when it comes to healthcare related matters. We shall be looking at personal points of view and zoom out to the community or nation-state perspective of how healthcare can be taken care of. By all means, taking care of ourselves is very helpful in terms of generating wealth to the society as a whole. Because communities, societies, nation-states, they all are built upon the smallest unit of a single person. Each and every individual counts in producing a wealthy nation. Only when the mind and body is both psychologically and physically fit that a nation can propel and progress peacefully. If you think wellness is expensive, try illness. You are what you eat. Let the food be thy medicine rather than let the medicine be thy food. Pay farmers now or pay pharmacists later. Not only is eating habits important, the daily routine and lifestyle will have an impact on our health too. We can make time out of our hectic work schedules now to keep ourselves fit through exercises or wellness workouts, or to have that plenty of time lying on hospital beds later should something severe happen to our overloaded body. So, creating awareness and bringing that healthy life practices to the community or society should be the foundation of providing effective healthcare that would eventually lead to true wealth creation. http://www.thesdgs2030.com © 2020 BSYS Solution (M) Sdn Bhd. • 26. Global Goals: Every Achievement Counts (Section 5: Resource Management) What should we do if things like a global pandemic outbreak happen? It did happen. Rest assured it is not the first and it is not going to be the last time as well. Let alone a great disaster that could wipe out all we had been building throughout the centuries, always keep the faith and hope, life will find its way. For instance, a search on Google Sheets case study reveals how a woman at risk for severe illness from COVID-19 mobilized relief from her home. It was an inspiring story of how digitization and the use of technology empowers people within a community to help each other in time of crisis. To elaborate further, quoted from the site, the woman, “Erin wanted to connect volunteers with high-risk people in need. So, aided by three local college students, she made the website Louisville COVID-19 Match. After volunteers and recipients sign up on the site, Erin’s team uses Google Sheets to enter information and pair people up based on ZIP codes.” This is a proof of what resource matching could be like and can 31 be done. Bottom line is, people matter, and anyone can help their community as long as the correct tools and medium are provided. It doesn’t have to be state of the art technology, and no need to reinvent the wheel when basic tools are within reach. We have also seen private initiatives being carried out during the pandemic lockdown period where people took up volunteerism work doing jobs like spraying disinfectant in public areas, distributing healthcare necessities to the needy groups etc. Some professionals in Malaysia had even gone to the effort of setting up a centralised hub using a website that consolidates Personal Protection Equipments (PPE) requests from the front-liners fighting pandemic and matching it with the right PPE contributors . 32 Would resource matching platforms be a viable solution for global resource management especially during a global disaster? What if it were to be done on a nation-state level where the purpose is to help those who can’t even afford a decent living, such as those living under the poverty line during normal periods? A Conditional Cash Transfer mechanism might be the answer. This would involve technological implementation alongside policy adjustment. ABCDE The World on a national level. Sufficient data related to healthcare must be effectively collected first so that a bird eye’s view can be done to identify the challenges and bring out the possible solutions. “When health is absent, wisdom cannot reveal itself, art cannot manifest, strength cannot fight, wealth becomes useless, and intelligence cannot be applied.” ~ Herophilus 32 https://myppehub.com/ 31 https://about.google/stories/erin-hinson-louisville-coronavirus-relief/ http://www.thesdgs2030.com © 2020 BSYS Solution (M) Sdn Bhd. • 27. Global Goals: Every Achievement Counts (Section 5: Resource Management) Keeping people safe, alive and healthy every day, everywhere, in all sorts of conditions is definitely not an easy task to accomplish. Initiatives such as the one by UNICEF to make sure more of the world’s children are fed, vaccinated, educated and protected through influencing laws, policies and customs to help protect children, can be further studied and scaled to include more vulnerable groups.33 With the advancement of technologies, creation of entertaining products in the form of writings, audio and visual presentation have become easier and more accessible to the people. Technology empowers people with more freedom to express their thoughts and showcase their creativity, and to reach out further in the marketplace. From the early days of the internet where bloggers still rule the digital realm with articles filled only with words and perhaps some photos, we have seen how the digital media took a leap in today’s world filled with Youtubers who produce their own videos, Key Opinion Leaders (KOL), social media influencers etc that is creating more and more varieties for the industry. A blossoming scene in the entertainment landscape. Again, it’s not going to be only human vs human with the help of technology, but it could be human vs machine, or even machine vs machine in the very near future in this entertainment space, similar to what we brought up earlier in the discussion of cyber security related matters. The rise of the virtual kings and queens of social media, computer generated influencer, singer and model, are "real" and are making a wave into the industry. Now everybody can become a producer, broadcaster, a socmed 34 influencer, a person behind a deep fake character, and some of these “everybody” may be a “virtual somebody”. What is real? How do you define real? At this point of time, deep fake technology is picking up in momentum and it seems that everybody not only be able to become a producer, but also with accessibility to make deep fake videos now. The 36 astonishing talk and tech demo should lead us to think further about both the ethical implications and the creative possibilities of this tech, and the steps that ought to be taken to fight against its misuse. That's one of the reasons why we put in the Ethics element as we explore the ABCDE The World movement earlier. How would, or should people deal with fake videos, where famous people say things they've never said in real life? This brings us to another area of entertainment, things like esports, second life, augmented reality and virtual reality etc. So, are we really in a game we call life that is actually a creation of a higher intelligence that we will only find out the real answer once we leave this world as we know it? Whatever it may be, keep the faith, stay strong, life goes on. The whole thing about this life that we were blessed with could be the biggest entertainment of all. We only die once, we live everyday! Be grateful and enjoy along the way. Work hard, play harder, as they said. We are seeing not only the efficiency in production of media, but also the speed and scope where information spreads. In the early days, record companies sold singers albums where there were normally one or two hit songs alongside other not so famous songs in one Laser Disc (LD), cassette, or Compact Disc (CD) format as technology progressed. This scenario might be hard to visualize for new generations as they grew up over the cloud environment. Songs, MTVs, movie clips etc entertainment products are being distributed over the digital world, in downloadable format and on-demand basis. As such, there is no need to produce what seems to be less quality products just to fully utilize the quota of a career medium, such as the cassette or CD. Let alone the die hard fans, how many people really remember all the 100 songs by a singer sold over 10 albums? Many of us would more than agree that the compilation album of a singer’s all time hit song is worth more than the single piece album that comes with one hit song and nine other songs that we seldom listen to. The point here is with on-demand models and borderless reachout, the whole entertainment industry can become more productive and effective as only quality products will be given the attention and acknowledgement they deserve through open, transparent, and competitive market force. Entertainers such as singers can produce a single masterpiece and make it a global hit, while consumers will not be given additional items (such as the other nine songs that come with a single album in the olden days) 36 Fake videos of real people — and how to spot them https://www.ted.com/talks/supasorn_suwajanakorn_fake_videos_of_real_people_and_how_to_spot_them http://www.thesdgs2030.com © 2020 BSYS Solution (M) Sdn Bhd.
