Quick and simple ways to utilise i pads in lessons

  1. 1. Some Quick and simple ways to utilise iPads in lessons http://carteripads.wordpress.com http://humanitiesast.wordpress.com
  2. 2. Aim of the presentation To provide some practical ways to build the use of iPads into lessons with minimal preparation!
  3. 3. Common concerns • Not all students bring them. • Can be a disruptive influence. • I haven’t got time to prepare the resources needed. • I don’t know enough about iPads to use them.
  4. 4. Some answers? • Plan opportunities for using in groups rather than assuming all have one. • The more you use, the more likely they are to bring. • Operate a ‘face up’ and ‘face down’ approach – create a routine. • Choose one app or idea per term. Don’t try and do everything (marginal gains). • Try and use for small tasks initially – little and often eg a starter, a plenary, an extension task for AG&T students.
  5. 5. Three to take away & use (with minimal preparation) • x3 Starter ideas • x3 Plenary ideas • x3 Extension ideas for AG&T students
  6. 6. Lesson starter #1 ‘Say what you see’ • Show the class an image related to the lesson. • Students have to take photo with their iPad and annotate with a description as if trying to describe to someone who can’t see it. • Can use ‘Skitch’ app for this. (should have recently been added to your iPad)
  7. 7. Example Made using Skitch app
  8. 8. Lesson starter #2 What’s going on? • Show the class a thought provoking image related to the lesson. • Students have to take photo with their iPad and annotate with questions that the image poses • Can use ‘Balloon + stickies’ app for this (should have recently been added to your iPad)
  9. 9. Example Made using Balloon+ stickies app
  10. 10. Lesson starter #3 Sharp starter • Something that means you do not have to say anything for first five minutes of a lesson. • Students scan QR code on the classroom door as they enter which takes them to a resource, article, quiz or video clip as a stimulus.
  11. 11. Example – Year 8. Your starter for today
  12. 12. Make a QR code • Choose a webpage you want students to use. • Paste the address into one of these websites: http://www.qrstuff.com/ or https://www.the-qrcode-generator.com/ • Save/Download the QR code image • It can now be printed or saved to lesson presentation. • Students can then scan using any free QR code reader app
  13. 13. Lesson plenary #1 Using ‘ShowMe’ app to identify and define key terms • Teacher shouts out a letter, student has to respond with keyword from topic. Student then chooses another student to explain meaning or relevance.
  14. 14. Lesson plenary #2 Using ‘WordClouds’ app to sum up most important parts of the learning in the lesson • Students add words from the lesson • Duplicate words more often if more important element of the lesson – as this will make the word larger in the cloud • Show and explain choices to partner or teacher or class via Airplay
  15. 15. Lesson plenary #3 Review the learning using kahoot* * a bit more preparation may be needed if not using one already in the library. • It allows you to create quizzes, discussion questions and surveys so that you can recap learning with students and review their progress in a fun way. • My bluffers guide here: https://carteripads.wordpress.com/2014/12/11/app-of-the-week-7-kahoot-a
  16. 16. AG&T Extension ideas #1 QR code extension wall/sheet • Selection of websites to extend learning. • Quizzes from internet that students can play. • Video clips that can be watched to cement understanding. • Build up through the term. Add one per week.
  17. 17. AG&T Extension ideas #2 Freeze frame video • Take a series of pictures to summarise the learning from the lesson. • Import into ‘Explain Everything’ app* and record an audio summary with each picture/image. • Save as a video. My bluffers guide here: https://carteripads.wordpress.com/2015/01/11/app-of-the-week-8-explain- everything-a-bluffers-guide/ *Should already be on your iPad
  18. 18. AG&T Extension ideas #3 Tweet it. • Summarise the learning today in 120 characters.. EXACTLY. No more and no less! • This website allows them to tweet without using twitter itself! http://www.ictcomputerscience.org/
