Office Equipment Competitive Intelligence Case
1. Case Story
Electronics—Office Equipment
2007
Competitive Intelligence
European Headquarter Operations of Global Electronics Manufacturer
Client
Not being able to respond rapidly to ever-shifting 'street pricing' of
competitor's products and services leading to a loss of revenue and
market share. The absence of good market intelligence was making it
difficult for the European marketing function to set strategies.
Problem
To build a portal with the capacity to record and manage street
pricing data, calculate average across speed ranges and then
automatically deliver online reports and graphing.
Solution
www.encanvas.com
(1) To continue to use spreadsheets and manual graphing.
(2) To develop a business case for an internal development (which
would have been difficult due to the unknown business benefits and
current load on the IT function).
Options
“It's the first time we have been able to see a holistic view of street
pricing across our region. The simplicity of presentation provided
by the graphing capabilities has helped us to identify trends that we
otherwise would have found difficult to see given the limitations of
spreadsheets.”

“Our senior managers now have access to the
landscape of street pricing across our region.

A database and portal was architected providing three layers of
user authority taking into account the differing information needs
of administrators, head office marketing and regional sales
organizations. Reports and charts were then developed in
consultation with the project manager and user community.
Application
The building of this application took 12 man-hours and the iterative
'perfecting' process took 1 week.
