  1. 1. BY CELIA CARRANZA AND LARA SÁNCHEZ. 1º ESO 2012-13. IES FRAY PEDRO DE URBINA
  2. 2. Biography of Hades • He had at his side "Persephone", no less cruel. She was abducted by Hades in the plains of Sicily, was his niece. • When Heracles descended to the underworld, Hades wanted to prevent the entry into his kingdom and faced him, but Hades was wounded by an arrow in the shoulder and the god had to be taken quickly to Olympus, where Peon ("god of heal") applied a miraculous balm and the wound healed quickly.
  3. 3. The reason for his name • For many people, simply to say his name was terrible, so they used euphemisms. Precious minerals came from the depths of the Earth (the underworld governed by Hades), it was considered that had control of minerals. So it was called: `` Πλουτων Plouton'' (related to wealth).
  4. 4. FAMILY • Hades was the son of Titan Cronos, god of time, and Rhea, the goddess of the earth. • His brothers were: Poseidon, god of the sea, and Zeus, the god of gods, sky and thunder.
  5. 5. Kingdom of Hades • His kingdom was that of the dead. In Greek mythology it was the entrance to the underworld, located at Avernus (a crater near Cumae).
  6. 6. History of the Underworld • For the Hellenes, the dead entered the underworld by crossing the Acheron River, pointed by Charon. They had to pay an obolus (small coin to be put in the mouth of the deceased). The poor without family and friends were meeting for a hundred years on near the bank of the river. • The Greeks offered the possibility for the deceased to return to the upper world to pursue those who had not given a proper funeral. The other side of the river was guarded by Cerberus, the three-headed dog of Hades.
