3. Maria Antonia Blasco Marhuenda (San Vicente of Raspeig, Alicante,
1965), known as Maria Blasco, is a scientific Spanish woman
specialized in telomeres and teleromase. From June 22, 2011, she
directs in Spain the National Centre of OncologicaI Investigations.
She graduated in 1988 in Biological Sciences for the Autonomous
University of Madrid. She obtained her doctorate in 1993 in
Biochemistry and Molecular Biology under the direction of the
relevant scientist Margarita Salas.
She has been the director of the Programme of Molecular Oncology
and she founded the biotechnology company "Life Length" and she
is also the director of the CNIO. Maria Blasco received, for her
studies on oncology and aging, the prize Körber Europeo of
Science. She was inspired to devote her life to science by Carol
Greider and Elisabeth Blackburn, winners of the Nobel Prize in
2009, who she met while she was working at the Harbor’ Laboratory
of NY.

partir du 22 Juin 2011, elle dirige en Espagne le Centre National
des Investigateurs Oncologicals. Elle est diplômé, en l'an 1.988,
en Sciences Biologiques de l'Université Autonome de Madrid.
Elle obtient le doctorat en 1993 en Biochimie et Biologie
Moléculaire pour la même université sous la direction de
Margarita Salas Falgueras, centre sévère de Biologie
Moléculaire. Elle a été directrice du programme d'oncologie
moléculaire et a fondé la société de biotechnologie Life Length
et elle est aussi la directrice du CNIO. Maria Blasco a reçu, pour
ses études en oncologie et vieillissement, le prix Körber Europeo
of Science. Elle a été inspirée à consacrer sa vie à la science
pour Carol Greider et Elisabeth Blackburn, lauréats du prix
Nobel en 2009 qu'elle a rencontré pendant qu'elle travaillait au
Harbor Laboratoire de New York.

She has worked for two years at Mount Sinai

possible mechanisms that induces diseases

Elena Yubero Serrano, nació en Córdoba el 9 de Julio de 1974.
Es investigadora en el Instituto Maimónides de Investigaciones
Biomedicoas de Córdoba (IMIBIC)
Trabajó durante dos años en el Mount Sinai Hospital (Nueva York) en uno de
los mejores grupos reconocidos a nivel internacional, sobre el estudio de
los posibles mecanismos que inducen enfermedades relacionadas con el
envejecimiento, diabetes y otras enfermedades crónicas.

9. Helena Illnerová Professor Helena Illnerová was born on December 28 of
1937. Her team discovered that the production of
melatonin in the cerebral cortex is controlled by
biological clocks in the brain. Women with low levels of
melatonin are prone to cancer. This hormone helps to
stimulate the immune system.
She is currently a member of the Scientific Council of the
Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic, the
Charles University and two of its faculties, Masaryk
University and the University of South Bohemia, the
Council of FGÚ AV ČR and a member of the National
Museum Council. He is also a member of the European
Research Advisory Board, the European Academy of
Sciences and Arts, and from 2000 to 2004 he was a
member of the Grand Jury of the Descartes EU
Research Prize.

10. Helena Illnerová
La profesora Helena Illnerová nació el 28 de diciembre

Françoise Barré-Sinoussi was born 30
July 1947.
She is a French virologist and Director of
the Regulation of Retroviral Infections
Division (Unité de Régulation des
Infections Rétrovirales) and Professor at
the Institut Pasteur in Paris, France.
Barré-Sinoussi performed some of the
fundamental work in the identification of
the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)
as the cause of AIDS.
She won Nobel Prize in 2008

Barré-Sinoussi shared in 2008 the Nobel Prize in Medicine
with Luc Montagnier for the discovery of HIV, and with
Harald zur Hausen, who discovered the viral cause of
cervical cancer that allowed the development of the HPV
vaccine. Barré-Sinoussi's research quickly focused on a
particular group of viruses, retroviruses. In addition to the
Nobel Prize, Barré-Sinoussi has received the following
awards: Sovac Prize, Körber Prize of the European
Sciences (Prize of the Körber Foundation for the
Promotion of Science in Europe), King Faisal International
Award.

15. Nettie Stevens
Nettie Stevens was born in Vermont in 1861 and she
died in 1912 in Baltimore. Her death prevented her
from winning the Nobel prize and the chair in the Bryn
Mawr college.
She worked in genetic. One of the major scientific
contributions was to discover the X and Y system as a
determinant of sex.
Successfully expanded the fields of embryology and
cytogenetics.

Biruté Marija Filomena Galdikas, OC (born 10 May
1946), is a Lithuanian-Canadian anthropologist,
primatologist, conservationist, ethologist, and author.
She is currently a Professor at Simon Fraser
University. Well known in the field of primatology,
Galdikas is recognized as a leading authority on
orangutans. Prior to her field study of orangutans,
scientists knew little about the species.

Esther Miriam Zimmer Lederberg (1922-2006) was an American
microbiologist, a pioneer in bacterial genetics. Her most notable contributions include:
- The discovery of the bacteriophage λ virus
- The transfer of genes between bacteria by specialized transduction
- The development of the plate replication method for the culture of bacteria and
- The discovery of the plasmid F or fertility factor.
Lederberg also founded and directed the now extinct Plasmid Reference Center at Stanford
University, where she maintained, named and distributed plasmids of many types, including
those with antibiotic resistance, heavy metal resistance, virulence, conjugation, colicins,
transposons, and other unknown factors.

Montalcini
Rita Levi-Montalcini (Turín, 22 de abril de 19091 - Roma, 30 de
diciembre de 2012) fue una científica italiana especializada en
neurología.
Ella descubrió el primer factor de crecimiento conocido, el
factor de crecimiento nervioso, por el cual en 1986 recibió el
Premio Nobel de Fisiología o Medicina compartido con Stanley
Cohen y también recibió en 1987 la Medalla Nacional de
Ciencias, el reconocimiento más alto de la comunidad científica
estadounidense. Al final de la Segunda Guerra Mundial emigró a
los Estados Unidos, donde trabajó en el laboratorio Viktor

30. Rita Levi-Montalcini
Rita Levi-Montalcini (Turín, April 22, 19091 - Rome, December 30, 2012)
was an Italian scientist specializing in neurology.
She discovered the first known growth factor, the nerves growth factor, by which in
1986 she received the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine shared with Stanley Cohen
and also received in 1987 the National Medal of Science, the highest recognition of the
American scientific community. At the end of the Second World War, she emigrated to
the United States, where she worked in the laboratory Viktor Hamburger of the Institute
of Zoology of Washington University in San Luis.
