setting up agriculture based processing industries, mainly for export.
• The term is widely used mainly in India.
• AEZ are to be identified by the State Government.
• Corporate sector with proven credentials would be encouraged to
sponsor new agri export zone.
• APEDA has been nominated as the Nodal Agency to coordinate the
efforts on the part of Central Govt. negotiations.
• Under chapter 16 of Exim Policy 2001, a new concept of Agri
Export Zone (AEZ) has been inserted by Govt. of India on
11.05.2002
• Primary objective of boosting agricultural exports from India.
• The Central Government has sanctioned 60 AEZs comprising about
40 agricultural commodities .
• AEZs is spread across 20 states in the country.
• Government has prepared a five- year road map for increasing agri-
exports by over Rs.2000 crores and in the process cleared five more
agri-export zones entailing a total investment of Rs.239.37 crores.
Services which would be managed and co-ordinated by State
Government/corporate sector and would include provision of pre/post
harvest treatment and operations, plant
protection, processing, packaging, storage and related research &
development etc. APEDA will supplement, within its schemes and
provisions, efforts of State Governments for facilitating such exports.
Units in AEZ would be entitled for all the facilities available for
exports of goods in terms of provisions of the respective schemes.
The Agri Export Zones are notified under Appendix 15 of the
Handbook of Procedures (Vol 1) under the Exim Policy.
The Economic Times
Economic survey 2013: India’s global
ranking for agricultural-exports improves
10th
Need For AEZ
• Lack of adequate storage
facilities.
• Lack of suitable processing.
• Lack of promotion of products.
• Lack of marketing,
• To overcome all this barriers
with the help
of APEDA ,AEZ was launched..
Major Components

region in which these products are grown.
• Adopting an end-to-end approach of integrating the entire process, right
from the stage of production till it reaches the consumption stage.
• Integration of the activities of various agencies connected with the
department of the product.
Anticipated Benefits
• Strengthening of backward linkages with a market oriented
approach.
• Product acceptability and its competitiveness abroad as well as in
the domestic market.
• Value addition to basic agricultural produce.
• Bring down cost of production through economy of scale.
• Better price for agricultural produce.
• Improvement in product quality and packaging.
• Promote trade related research and development.
