Editor's Notes

  1. What words come to mind when you see this picture? Go ahead – shout them out. I heard: Interacting with a cleared landscape can feel like this.
  2. What words come to mind here? I heard: The thing about a jungle-like environment is that I may not see a clear path but I see something and that can be satisficing as ??? Would say.
  3. So, through experience or education, I learn to navigate the jungle by climbing the nearest tree and this is both helpful and potentially harmful because ecologists know that a microclimate can be found in the canopy – temperatures vary The conditions here are unique, , I may be over or under dressed, confronted by fauna that live only here, it may be raining here when the forest floor was dry. In any case I am ill-prepared. I hope that these pictures helped you feel a bit for our library users as they navigate their information landscapes. In the next slide, I use the words of Dr. Annmarie Lloyd (who is speaking in another room – so if you are bored, I will understand if you decamp to hear her expert talk). I think of her as one of the philosophers of IL. I have admired her work for many years.
  4. Landscapes of information – libraries are still those manicured (curated, organized, trimmed, tagged) landscapes but the Internet is another landscape Social networks are another landscape Friends, family, colleagues - the world of human contacts has been the most important landscape in the past. Do we know that it still is or has social media supplanted it for some? Literacies of information - This has been librarian’s primary concern, of course. We have called it primarily information literacy but we know that part of the Literacies are Digital literacy - how to use a mouse but also how to do that on different devices (not throwing up my hands when confronted with an Apple product) Media literacy Media Information Literacy – Unesco Modalities What are these – Epistemic – how we assign authority; Physical – can we perform the actions needed (digital literacy); Social – how have we been raised; how have we been educated in school; what do our friends know?
  5. In general, Seniors did better than other groups on dispositions, except for Tolerance of Ambiguity. The differences are not significant but worth watching.
  6. The numbers in the two groups preclude comment on any differences found
  7. Is home schooling a phenomenon here in Britain? I thought that it might be a more significant presence in North Carolina but it wasn’t. Middle college and early college are programs where students take college classes while still in high school.
