Bissaya Barreto

2. BIOGRAPHY
 Fernando Baeta Bissaya Barreto Rosa
was born in Castanheira de Pêra, on
October 29th 1886.
 He was a Professor of Medicine at the
University of Coimbra and a politician.
 He boosted sanatoriums, leprosaria, child
homes, shelters for the elderly, motherly
institutes, economic neighborhoods. He led a
campaign against tuberculosis, leprosy and madness.
 He died in Lisbon on September 16th 1974.

3. Work
 Bissaya Barreto wrote many books about Medicine
such as:
 The sun in surgery.’ Coimbra University
Press, 1915.
 ‘The teaching of surgery and surgical pathology in
Coimbra’. Coimbra, 1922.
 He also wrote lots of articles for magazines.

4. “Portugal dos Pequenitos”is a
learning-through-play park basically
intended for children, conceived by
Bissaya Barreto and designed by the
architect Cassiano Branco.
The park belongs to the Bissaya
Barreto Foundation since 1959.
Portugal dos Pequenitos is the
living image of the Portuguese way of
thinking and of being all over the
world and an historical
and pedagogical remark of many
generations.
