Solvay (Belgium) completes acquisition of Bayer’s global seed coatings business
Solvay and Bayer announced the successful closing of Solvay's previously announced
acquisition of Bayer’s global coatings business, with facilities in Méréville, France, and
tolling operations in the U.S. and Brazil. The business is recognized globally for seed coating
and seed enhancement products such as Peridiam, fluency powders, Certop, Pro-Ized
Pigment, and Talkum, and its research and development capabilities for on-seed
formulations. The Méréville facility's entire product portfolio, R&D projects and the
business line's international tolling operations are now fully transferred to Solvay. The
Méréville facility has 36 permanent employees and conducts industry-leading research and
development of application technologies for seeds, such as seed coating and filming
processes, representing around 20% of the site’s activity, while the remaining 80% is
dedicated to research and formulation of aqueous solutions called film-coaters. The film
coaters developed at the Méréville site are exported and used in 35 countries all over the
world. Seed coatings can best be understood as the “glue” that allows any seed treatment
product to bind to the actual seed. In combination, the active ingredient that is coated on the
seed helps to protect seeds against insects and diseases that could prevent the seed from
germinating or growing. Seed treatments are especially important for field crop seeds such
as wheat, rapeseed, maize, sunflower, rice and soya, and vegetable seeds such as beetroot.
Executive Commentary
“This acquisition continues Solvay's strategy to strengthen our range of sustainable,
bio-based solutions for agricultural customers, fully aligned to our G.R.O.W. strategy,”
commented president of Solvay's Novecare business unit. “We are proud to welcome the
legacy Bayer SeedGrowth coatings team to our Solvay agricultural specialties family.”

Alstom (France) presents the world's first hydrogen passenger train in
Poland
For any queries, Please write to marketing@itshades.com
25
Solution Description
The Coradia iLint, world's first hydrogen fuel cell passenger train, manufactured by Alstom, world leader in green and smart mobility, has made
its debut on the Railway Research Institute's test track in Żmigród, near Wrocław in Poland. Over two days, Alstom teams are presenting the train
to a variety of local stakeholders, including regional operators, transport authorities, government decision-makers and leading media, in order to
highlight the potential of the Coradia iLint for sustainable transport in Poland. The showcase comes in the wake of the announcement of Poland’s
National Recovery Plan, which includes provisions for the introduction of thirty low-emission trains for Polish regional operators by 2026. Alstom
Coradia iLint is the world’s first and only operational passenger train powered by hydrogen fuel cells. This completely emission-free train is quiet
and emits only water vapor and condensation. The train features several different innovations: clean energy conversion and efficient energy supply
and storage system combined with intelligent energy management. Designed specifically for use on non-electrified lines, it enables clean,
sustainable train operations. The world's first hydrogen train was built by Alstom in Salzgitter, Germany whereas body shells are produced at
Alstom Konstal site in Katowice, Poland. The train is based on the service-proven diesel train family Coradia Lint. Replacing the diesel traction
by fuel cell technology allows completely clean train operation with a performance matching that of regular Coradia Lint diesel multiple units,
which means these trains can operate the same timetable as the diesel ones.

Arkema (France) launches a new renewable pvdf grade for batteries
For any queries, Please write to marketing@itshades.com
26
Solution Description
Kynar® CTO PVDF grades using the mass balance approach under the ISCC+ certification process will be produced firstly in Arkema’s
Pierre-Bénite plant in France for its European customers, focusing initially on grades specifically targeted for the lithium-ion battery market.
This patent pending technology allows a climate change impact reduction of almost 20% of the Kynar® PVDF binder (expressed in kg eq.
CO2/kg, according to the ISO14040 standard) while reducing dependence on upstream crude oil consumption. The crude tall oil used in
upstream feedstock production is a residue of the Kraft process of wood pulp manufacture. The new Kynar® CTO grades are certified to be
compliant with industry leading responsible forestry standards. They do not result in deforestation, and there is no direct competition with
food crops. In a second phase, the production of this range of sustainable PVDF grades will be extended to each of Arkema’s global PVDF
manufacturing sites and will be made available to all traditional PVDF markets and applications. Furthermore, Arkema has already announced
a project in the United States to produce PVDF grades using fluorine derived as a co-product from the agrochemical industry, thus requiring
no dedicated fluorspar mining. These grades are expected to be commercialized by mid-2022. Kynar® CTO grades will be offered as
functionally identical alternatives to Arkema’s flagship binder grades, Kynar® HSV900 and Kynar® HSV1810.

Motorola (USA) Solutions Introduces Concealed Weapon Detection Solution
to Alert Security Teams of Hidden Weapons
For any queries, Please write to marketing@itshades.com
36
Solution Description
Motorola Solutions announced the newest addition to its video security and analytics portfolio, Concealed Weapon Detection (CWD), through an
agreement with Evolv Technologies, Inc. The scanning solution uses advanced sensors and artificial intelligence to detect a wide range of
concealed weapons and threats, such as firearms, metallic weapons and improvised explosive devices, on a visitor entering a premises. The
introduction of this technology is a part of Motorola Solutions’ongoing commitment to the innovation and integration of security technologies that
help organizations increase safety. The solution is designed to allow up to 3600 visitors to walk through one of the scanning systems per hour
without having to conduct pat downs or empty pockets as the technology can distinguish between personal items and weapons. If a threat is
detected, an alert is displayed on an Express tablet showing the location of the potential threat on the person’s body, or in their bag, to security
operators. Alerts are sent directly to Motorola Solutions’ video management system, Avigilon Control Center (ACC), which automatically notifies
and shares live video with the facility’s security team so they have precise awareness of the situation and can support an immediate response. In
addition, the sensitivity levels on the CWD solution can be adjusted to align with the safety needs of a facility based on their anticipated
threat-scenarios. This capability allows for the technology to identify and flag new threat profiles over time, and enables security personnel to
manage data and insights that help to provide a safe and positive experience for visitors and staff.

Solvay (Belgium) launches its first partially bio-based textile yarn
For any queries, Please write to marketing@itshades.com
39
Solution Description
Solvay is globally launching Bio Amni®, the first partially bio-based polyamide textile yarn developed by the company. It is a polyamide 5.6,
which is produced entirely at the company's textile industrial unit in Brazil. The development of Bio Amni® follows the growing global trend in
demand for more sustainable textile products, especially bio-based materials. Solvay's research and innovation teams worked on the creation of
the product for two years. The textile sector currently faces three main challenges in relation to the environment and sustainability: resources, the
production process, and disposal. Solvay already has developed sustainable alternatives in the production process, using cleaner energy sources,
closed water circuits, and zero effluent emissions at its industrial unit in Brazil, as well as more biodegradable products to support more sustainable
disposal. With Bio Amni®, Solvay is now offering its first partially bio-based textile yarn, further expanding on its diverse portfolio of sustainable
products. With the launch of Bio Amni®, sustainable textiles will now account for 30 percent of Solvay's global polyamide portfolio, a figure
which the group expects to reach 50 percent in the next three years. Bio Amni® is just the latest of Solvay's innovations for the global textile
market. In 2020, as a quick response to COVID-19, the company launched Amni® Virus-Bac OFF, a functional polyamide that inhibits
contamination between textiles and users, preventing the fabric transmitting viruses, including coronaviruses, and bacteria.

Johnson Matthey have been awarded the RSC’s 2021 Dalton Division Horizon prize for their collaboration with bp to create bp-JM
Fischer-Tropsch Technology – a renewable route to sustainable aviation fuels created from household waste. The waste, which would
otherwise be sent to landfill and decompose to form methane, will first be separated from any recyclable items before being converted
to syngas and used to make sustainable aviation fuel, which burns cleaner and with fewer particles. The team developed a new
catalyst formation – using concepts from fundamental inorganic chemistry, optimising cobalt dispersion and molecular interactions
– as well as a new carrier for the catalyst that increases its surface area and removes the heat given off during the reaction. The fuel
will initially be deployed by Fulcrum BioEnergy in Nevada in 2021. Once operational, the plant – the first of its kind in the US – is
expected to convert approximately 175,000 tons of household waste into approximately 11 million gallons of fuel each year – the
equivalent of fuel needed for more than 180 transatlantic return flights. It is a vital step in the transition to low carbon fuels in the
aviation industry – one of the most challenging sectors to adapt due to the energy density needed in aircraft.

This patent pending technology allows a climate change impact reduction of almost 20% of the Kynar® PVDF binder (expressed in kg eq. CO2/kg, according to the ISO14040 standard) while reducing dependence on upstream crude oil consumption. The crude tall oil used in upstream feedstock production is a residue of the Kraft process of wood pulp manufacture. The new Kynar® CTO grades are certified to be compliant with industry leading responsible forestry standards. They do not result in deforestation, and there is no direct competition with food crops. In a second phase, the production of this range of sustainable PVDF grades will be extended to each of Arkema’s global PVDF manufacturing sites and will be made available to all traditional PVDF markets and applications. Furthermore, Arkema has already announced a project in the United States to produce PVDF grades using fluorine derived as a co-product from the agrochemical industry, thus requiring no dedicated fluorspar mining. These grades are expected to be commercialized by mid-2022. The scanning solution uses advanced sensors and artificial intelligence to detect a wide range of concealed weapons and threats, such as firearms, metallic weapons and improvised explosive devices, on a visitor entering a premises. The introduction of this technology is a part of Motorola Solutions’ongoing commitment to the innovation and integration of security technologies that help organizations increase safety. The solution is designed to allow up to 3600 visitors to walk through one of the scanning systems per hour without having to conduct pat downs or empty pockets as the technology can distinguish between personal items and weapons. If a threat is detected, an alert is displayed on an Express tablet showing the location of the potential threat on the person’s body, or in their bag, to security operators. Alerts are sent directly to Motorola Solutions’ video management system, Avigilon Control Center (ACC), which automatically notifies and shares live video with the facility’s security team so they have precise awareness of the situation and can support an immediate response. In addition, the sensitivity levels on the CWD solution can be adjusted to align with the safety needs of a facility based on their anticipated threat-scenarios. This capability allows for the technology to identify and flag new threat profiles over time, and enables security personnel to manage data and insights that help to provide a safe and positive experience for visitors and staff.

R & R Updates IT Shades Engage & Enable Johnson Matthey (UK) and bp technology enabling waste to be converted into sustainable fuels scoops top prize For any queries, Please write to marketing@itshades.com 49 Johnson Matthey have been awarded the RSC’s 2021 Dalton Division Horizon prize for their collaboration with bp to create bp-JM Fischer-Tropsch Technology – a renewable route to sustainable aviation fuels created from household waste. The waste, which would otherwise be sent to landfill and decompose to form methane, will first be separated from any recyclable items before being converted to syngas and used to make sustainable aviation fuel, which burns cleaner and with fewer particles. The team developed a new catalyst formation – using concepts from fundamental inorganic chemistry, optimising cobalt dispersion and molecular interactions – as well as a new carrier for the catalyst that increases its surface area and removes the heat given off during the reaction. The fuel will initially be deployed by Fulcrum BioEnergy in Nevada in 2021. Once operational, the plant – the first of its kind in the US – is expected to convert approximately 175,000 tons of household waste into approximately 11 million gallons of fuel each year – the equivalent of fuel needed for more than 180 transatlantic return flights. It is a vital step in the transition to low carbon fuels in the aviation industry – one of the most challenging sectors to adapt due to the energy density needed in aircraft. R&R Description
