1. OUTDOOR ADVENTURE
VIDEO PROJECT
Ivan L. Bartha, Coordinator for Experiential Programs
Evan Parkhouse, Rental Center Student Manager
2. PROJECT
Outdoor adventure is defined by those
immersed in the activity. Adventure for some,
might not be adventure for others and vice
versa. We propose that some of the most
powerful experiences can be shared by those
engaged in the activity. The Outdoor Adventure
Video Project is a deliberate effort by SCSU
Outdoor Endeavors to encourage students,
faculty and staff to capture and share their
adventures through digital multimedia
technology.
In order to effectively encourage and promote
participation, we are requesting digital
camcorder technology that provides high
quality footage, but also is durable enough to
provide years of service.
3. WHY BOTHER?
The technology can be expensive or not be
able to endure outdoor conditions (price vs.
durability)
Students embark on unique journeys which
they document already (social networking)
Let’s help them learn more about available
technology and allow them use of good
equipment (education)
Access to good equipment promotes good
techniques in documenting and sharing
adventure (mission)
4. CONTRASTS
VIO 1.5 $649.95
Super durable & likely to outlast any
comparable device
Waterproof, shockproof and easily maintained
Compatible with an array of outdoor activities
that would damage other cameras
Mount kits can be adapted for a multitude of
applications including kayaking, skiing or
snowboarding
SD technology
Currently used by UW Stout Adventures
5. CONTRASTS PT. 2
Kodak Playsport HD $149
Relatively inexpensive and easy to use right
out of the box
Water resistant and compatible with
activities where moisture is a potential
problem
Point, shoot & play interface is familiar for
most people
SD Technology
Currently used by Ithaca College in their
immersion semester Outdoor Leadership
Program
6. LOGISTICS
Free use for all students
Secure storage in the Student Recreation
Center
SCSU Outdoor Endeavors will check
equipment out/in using the current rental
system
Reservations would be available for
projects or scheduled trips
We would encourage students to share
their adventure videos either directly or
indirectly
7. GPS EDUCATION &
GEOCACHING PROJECT
Ivan L. Bartha, Coordinator for Experiential Programs
Evan Parkhouse, Rental Center Student Manager
8. PROJECT
While there is a strong presence of
GPS use in academic programs at
SCSU, there is virtually no presence of
GPS education or geocaching activities
outside of the classroom setting. The
growth of geocaching as a recreational
activity has increased dramatically over
the last 5 years. The Minnesota DNR
has geocache sites throughout the state
park system along with hundreds of
geocache sites locally.
SCSU Outdoor Endeavors would like
to take a lead as the provider of GPS
education and geocaching as a
recreation activity.
9. WHY BOTHER?
Because of the upfront cost of GPS units, the
cost of participation may be prohibitive
The activity has wide appeal regionally with
formal and informal participation offered
locally, regionally and nationally
Student led initiatives help promote use of
technology in the outdoors and the
development of lifelong recreation
The development of a strong education
component opens up opportunities for
students to connect through a common
interest and activity
Helps create an interest in the campus and
surrounding areas through creative
exploration and skill development
10. GARMIN GPS UNITS
Three models selected based on features,
costs and interface options
All models utilize mapping technology and are
geocache compatible right out of the box
There will be added savings of more GPS units
w/requested funds or initial savings through
wholesale pricing options
Multiple use applications would expand use
beyond geocaching and increase utilization
The requested number of units will
accommodate up to 18 participants in events
or instructional programs
Currently used by multiple university outdoor
recreation and academic programs
11. LOGISTICS
Establish 5-6 geocaches on campus with a
strong SCSU identity
Conduct a fall and spring geocaching clinics at
no cost for SCSU students
Conduct a fall and spring GPS educational
workshops at no cost for SCSU students
Free rental use for all students
Secure storage and inventory in the Student
Recreation Center
SCSU Outdoor Endeavors will check
equipment out/in using the current rental
system
12. INTEGRATED SATELLITE
TRACKING PROJECT
Ivan L. Bartha, Coordinator for Experiential Programs
Evan Parkhouse, Rental Center Student Manager
13. PROJECT
The availability of GPS tracking
technology has never been more
affordable or accessible. Through the
use of GPS tracking technology groups
traveling in remote locations can
summon help if necessary along with
offering remote group tracking on
Google Maps from any computer. The
possibilities with this technology are
very intriguing.
SCSU Outdoor Endeavors would like
to take a lead in utilizing this
technology and identifying future
applications for campus.
14. WHY BOTHER?
The technology is very affordable, but it is not used beyond the end
consumer market or as an educational tool
While cellular technology has its advantages, there are few places on
earth that are not in line of sight for satellite tracking
The SPOT Messenger is a simple unit that is easy to use and can
provide information about location, periodic check in messages or
requests for assistance if necessary
By utilizing the tracking feature, student group locations can be
identified, real-time, on an embedded map on the SCSU website
Creates an opportunity for the family, friends and SCSU administration
to follow a group as they travel in wilderness locations
15.
16. LOGISTICS
Utilize the SPOT messenger & tracking
service on 5 student trips
Host an embedded map for each trip that will
track the groups route
Publish press releases and notifications that
will generate traffic to the embedded map
Solicit feedback through an online forum,
adjacent to the map, on the usefulness of the
information
Develop a conference presentation proposal
that showcases the use & benefits of the
satellite tracking technology
SCSU Outdoor Endeavors would be
responsible for setting up tracking service,
storing and training students on the use of the
SPOT messenger unit.
