Chapter 1
THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND
Introduction
Education affects the platform by supporting and challenging students to acquire
the knowledge, skills and attributes needed to effectively achieve in school. Engaging in
this kind of socialization is necessary to have financial stability to cover their expenses
for living and to attain higher quality of learning education. Working while studying which
is the most common type of work, is driven primarily by financial needs, to meet an
immediate or critical need, to cover a shortfall in other forms of students support, to top
up income, to provide a better students experience or to help toward future goals
(Matthew Williams, researcher fellow 2014). As a student, the key to success is
recognizing the importance of time management. According to Ann logsdon (March 11,
2020) Time management can be a challenge when you are juggling work and school.
Whether you are working to put yourself through college or you are someone who is
going back to school to advance your current career, managing time in your
professional and academic life is no easy task. According to Jhoselle Tus 2020,
Academic Performance is dependent on multiple factors, two of which are stress and
motivation. It is an essential aspect for senior high school students as they are nearing
college life and because having better academic performances yield better opportunities
in life. Many researchers focus on working after graduation, but few investigate the
effects of working while in school and university. Tuition and cost associated with
attending college have recently increased in higher education. This has had an impact
on the students especially in grade 12 who are nearly graduating before entering
college life. They are primarily looking for jobs while in school to help offset some of
those costs and daily expenses.
As Students take greater responsibility for managing the processes of applying
their knowledge, they practice and further develop the critical skills and characteristics
that are important for work and daily life in the 21st century. These include organization,
decision-making, collaboration and teamwork, problem-solving, risk-taking, critical
thinking, creativity, adaptability and resilience.
One such program, the National Youth Administration students work program
focused on providing jobs to highschool and college students. Established in 1935, it
was the first federal program to directly aid students. At this time, it was estimated that
between one third and one half of all students were working to earn at least some
expenses.
Working while in school can lead to better labor market outcomes for students
through the accrual of work experience, professional connections, and the development
of soft skills (such as time management, communication skills, and problem-solving)
that contribute to academic and professional success (e.g., Light, 2001) However,
determining the effects of working on academic performance is difficult, as students may
endogenously choose the number of hours to allocate to work and study.
Australian Curriculum: Work Studies engages students in transferring work related
knowledge and understanding to activities that involve the world of work. Students
concentrate on learning and applying the knowledge, understanding and skills they
need to solve a problem or implement a project relevant to work or workplaces. An
organization that provides instruction for teaching students indifferent levels is also
known as School which is an educational institution designed to provide learning spaces
and environment (Horaceman,1976). Different types of students will be encountered in
this organization, there are students who only study and not worrying about financial
problems, and there are students who choose to work while studying. Palawan National
School is the largest campus public school in Puerto Princesa. According to Dania Asis
(2021) Although working as students help you get relevant real-world experience and
crucial soft skills before entering the actual working world while also providing you with
your own source of income, there are also some drawbacks such as disrupted sleep
habits and a high level of stress. If this problem is not resolved, a large number of
working students will be excluded from the real status and opportunities to catch up and
achieve good grades and academic performances. They will not be heard by institutions
or the government about their difficulties and they will be unable to provide financial
assistance and sustenance. Also, individuals in Palawan National School were unable
to inform about rationale of working students’ living conditions, and those with authority
to guide these students were unable sustain and make adjustments toward approaching
and understanding some working students.At the conclusion of our study, we hope to
provide evidence and confirmation of the reasons why students might choose to work
while they are in school. We also hope to provide more information about the
challenges Grade 12 students at Palawan National School faced while balancing their
studies and jobs. To this end, we will collect pertinent data about the challenges that
come with working and studying at the same time and determine whether this
compromises students' academic performance.With growing tuition and living expenses,
many students may find their academic experience to be extremely stressful. According
to Lauren E. Watanabe of UCF in 2005, many students find themselves needing to work
while attempting to attend classes. For those who have goals and are ready to graduate
at the conclusion of the school year, this is a problem. But how can this student fulfill his
or her obligations as a student if they are splitting their time between job and study in
order to support themselves and their families? When it comes to working students'
attitudes toward their academic performances and relationships with others, it is
important to understand and not undervalue them because they may encounter
challenges and difficulties managing their academics and work. Determine the
difficulties and methods used by the working students that have an impact on their
academic performance as well as any potential affection for their chosen position
through this research.Our research contributed to the field of study and provided
information to the population of working students worldwide. The school will be able to
adapt its educational programs to meet the needs of certain students thanks to this
study, which will enhance the working students' school experience overall.
Statement of the Problem
This study aims to determine the Academic Performances of grade 12 students
and the influence of time spent in studying and working at the same time.
Specifically, this study sought answers to the following questions:
1. Do working grade 12 HUMSS students more than or less than 30%?
2. Is there a significant relationship between working while studying and academic
performances of grade 12 HUMSS students of Palawan National School?
Hypothesis
1. Ha: There are more than 30% of working students in HUMSS 12 of
Palawan National School.
H0: There is less than 30% of working students in HUMSS 12 of Palawan
National School.
2. Ha: There is a significant relationship between working while studying and
academic performances of grade 12 HUMSS students of Palawan National
School.
H0: There is no significant relationship between working while studying and
academic performances of grade 12 HUMSS students of Palawan National
School.
Significance of the Study
The investigations of the study of Academic Performances of grade 12 HUMSS
students: Influence of time spent in studying and working is deemed significant for the
following:
This study aimed to provide information regarding the relevant reasons behind
students' ability to cope with their studies for academic performances while working as
well as to benefit not only these students but everyone who is related to them by
enlightening them on how they can better treat or understand working students.
For the residents of Grade 12 students of palawan national school, lot of educational
institutions for every students especially for senior high school and college was
established and created to support their learning system that is why this research is
significant for this community for them to use this study as a reference or basis in
understanding information on how the number of time did grade 12 HUMSS students
spent in studying and working affect their academic performances. The results will
enable the community to spread awareness on recognizing the school life for working
students and how they will be a good influence and motivation for them to remain
studying for their academics.
For the Palawan National School Community. These institutions for educating
different levels of students will be enlightened on ways to help and understand the
coping mechanism of working grade 12 HUMSS students toward their academic
performances and give them a basis in order to establish different programs or teaching
strategies to bridge the learning and help the working students if deemed necessary.
For the Researchers. They may use this study as a source of research literature when
they conduct their studies related to the topic about the learning system of working
students and how it may affect their academic performance. They can extend the scope
of the present investigation to formulate a more generalized conclusion.
For the Future Researchers. The results of this research may be a basis of further
studies and can be used as related literature for their future study related to the present
research.
Scope and Delimitation
This study is delimited on the following:
Problem. This study is entitled "Academic Performances of Grade 12 HUMSS
students: Influence of time spent in studying and working of Palawan
National School"
It aims to determine the influence of time spent in studying and working of grade 12
students towards their academic performances. The researcher could gather reliable
data by the descriptive survey and could evaluate the center of the study by those data
collected.
The study is delimited only for grade 12 HUMSS students and not be generalize to other
populations of other students who only focusing on their Academics Performances”
Locale. This study will be conducted in Palawan National School H Mendoza street
Barangay Manggahan Puerto Princesa Citv
The map of Puerto Princesa City, Palawan National school is presented below.

Time Frame. The study started on September 26, 2022 and will end in June 2022.
Participants. The participants in the study are Grade 12 students under HUMSS
Academic strand who will be the basis of the researcher in conducting the study.

Chapter 1 THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND Introduction Education affects the platform by supporting and challenging students to acquire the knowledge, skills and attributes needed to effectively achieve in school. Engaging in this kind of socialization is necessary to have financial stability to cover their expenses for living and to attain higher quality of learning education. Working while studying which is the most common type of work, is driven primarily by financial needs, to meet an immediate or critical need, to cover a shortfall in other forms of students support, to top up income, to provide a better students experience or to help toward future goals (Matthew Williams, researcher fellow 2014). As a student, the key to success is recognizing the importance of time management. According to Ann logsdon (March 11, 2020) Time management can be a challenge when you are juggling work and school. Whether you are working to put yourself through college or you are someone who is going back to school to advance your current career, managing time in your professional and academic life is no easy task. According to Jhoselle Tus 2020, Academic Performance is dependent on multiple factors, two of which are stress and motivation. It is an essential aspect for senior high school students as they are nearing college life and because having better academic performances yield better opportunities in life. Many researchers focus on working after graduation, but few investigate the effects of working while in school and university. Tuition and cost associated with attending college have recently increased in higher education. This has had an impact on the students especially in grade 12 who are nearly graduating before entering college life. They are primarily looking for jobs while in school to help offset some of those costs and daily expenses.

As Students take greater responsibility for managing the processes of applying their knowledge, they practice and further develop the critical skills and characteristics that are important for work and daily life in the 21st century. These include organization, decision-making, collaboration and teamwork, problem-solving, risk-taking, critical thinking, creativity, adaptability and resilience. One such program, the National Youth Administration students work program focused on providing jobs to highschool and college students. Established in 1935, it was the first federal program to directly aid students. At this time, it was estimated that between one third and one half of all students were working to earn at least some expenses. Working while in school can lead to better labor market outcomes for students through the accrual of work experience, professional connections, and the development of soft skills (such as time management, communication skills, and problem-solving) that contribute to academic and professional success (e.g., Light, 2001) However, determining the effects of working on academic performance is difficult, as students may endogenously choose the number of hours to allocate to work and study. Australian Curriculum: Work Studies engages students in transferring work related knowledge and understanding to activities that involve the world of work. Students concentrate on learning and applying the knowledge, understanding and skills they need to solve a problem or implement a project relevant to work or workplaces. An organization that provides instruction for teaching students indifferent levels is also
  • 3. known as School which is an educational institution designed to provide learning spaces and environment (Horaceman,1976). Different types of students will be encountered in this organization, there are students who only study and not worrying about financial problems, and there are students who choose to work while studying. Palawan National School is the largest campus public school in Puerto Princesa. According to Dania Asis (2021) Although working as students help you get relevant real-world experience and crucial soft skills before entering the actual working world while also providing you with your own source of income, there are also some drawbacks such as disrupted sleep habits and a high level of stress. If this problem is not resolved, a large number of working students will be excluded from the real status and opportunities to catch up and achieve good grades and academic performances. They will not be heard by institutions or the government about their difficulties and they will be unable to provide financial assistance and sustenance. Also, individuals in Palawan National School were unable to inform about rationale of working students’ living conditions, and those with authority to guide these students were unable sustain and make adjustments toward approaching and understanding some working students.At the conclusion of our study, we hope to provide evidence and confirmation of the reasons why students might choose to work while they are in school. We also hope to provide more information about the challenges Grade 12 students at Palawan National School faced while balancing their studies and jobs. To this end, we will collect pertinent data about the challenges that come with working and studying at the same time and determine whether this compromises students' academic performance.With growing tuition and living expenses, many students may find their academic experience to be extremely stressful. According
  • 4. to Lauren E. Watanabe of UCF in 2005, many students find themselves needing to work while attempting to attend classes. For those who have goals and are ready to graduate at the conclusion of the school year, this is a problem. But how can this student fulfill his or her obligations as a student if they are splitting their time between job and study in order to support themselves and their families? When it comes to working students' attitudes toward their academic performances and relationships with others, it is important to understand and not undervalue them because they may encounter challenges and difficulties managing their academics and work. Determine the difficulties and methods used by the working students that have an impact on their academic performance as well as any potential affection for their chosen position through this research.Our research contributed to the field of study and provided information to the population of working students worldwide. The school will be able to adapt its educational programs to meet the needs of certain students thanks to this study, which will enhance the working students' school experience overall. Statement of the Problem This study aims to determine the Academic Performances of grade 12 students and the influence of time spent in studying and working at the same time. Specifically, this study sought answers to the following questions: 1. Do working grade 12 HUMSS students more than or less than 30%? 2. Is there a significant relationship between working while studying and academic performances of grade 12 HUMSS students of Palawan National School?
  • 5. Hypothesis 1. Ha: There are more than 30% of working students in HUMSS 12 of Palawan National School. H0: There is less than 30% of working students in HUMSS 12 of Palawan National School. 2. Ha: There is a significant relationship between working while studying and academic performances of grade 12 HUMSS students of Palawan National School. H0: There is no significant relationship between working while studying and academic performances of grade 12 HUMSS students of Palawan National School. Significance of the Study The investigations of the study of Academic Performances of grade 12 HUMSS students: Influence of time spent in studying and working is deemed significant for the following: This study aimed to provide information regarding the relevant reasons behind students' ability to cope with their studies for academic performances while working as well as to benefit not only these students but everyone who is related to them by enlightening them on how they can better treat or understand working students. For the residents of Grade 12 students of palawan national school, lot of educational institutions for every students especially for senior high school and college was established and created to support their learning system that is why this research is significant for this community for them to use this study as a reference or basis in understanding information on how the number of time did grade 12 HUMSS students spent in studying and working affect their academic performances. The results will
  • 6. enable the community to spread awareness on recognizing the school life for working students and how they will be a good influence and motivation for them to remain studying for their academics. For the Palawan National School Community. These institutions for educating different levels of students will be enlightened on ways to help and understand the coping mechanism of working grade 12 HUMSS students toward their academic performances and give them a basis in order to establish different programs or teaching strategies to bridge the learning and help the working students if deemed necessary. For the Researchers. They may use this study as a source of research literature when they conduct their studies related to the topic about the learning system of working students and how it may affect their academic performance. They can extend the scope of the present investigation to formulate a more generalized conclusion. For the Future Researchers. The results of this research may be a basis of further studies and can be used as related literature for their future study related to the present research. Scope and Delimitation This study is delimited on the following: Problem. This study is entitled "Academic Performances of Grade 12 HUMSS students: Influence of time spent in studying and working of Palawan National School" It aims to determine the influence of time spent in studying and working of grade 12 students towards their academic performances. The researcher could gather reliable data by the descriptive survey and could evaluate the center of the study by those data collected.
  • 7. The study is delimited only for grade 12 HUMSS students and not be generalize to other populations of other students who only focusing on their Academics Performances” Locale. This study will be conducted in Palawan National School H Mendoza street Barangay Manggahan Puerto Princesa Citv The map of Puerto Princesa City, Palawan National school is presented below. Figure 1.Map of Palawan National School H. Mendoza street Barangay Manggahan, Puerto Princesa City, Palawan Time Frame. The study started on September 26, 2022 and will end in June 2022. Participants. The participants in the study are Grade 12 students under HUMSS Academic strand who will be the basis of the researcher in conducting the study.
