FAST Solutions "All-Inclusivw Guide TO Fastenal's Vending Solutions"

2. A Blueprint for Innovation
a blueprint for innovation
When Bob Kierlin founded Fastenal in 1967, the
plan was to dispense nuts and bolts out of custom
vending machines. The concept proved to be ahead
of its time, but it signaled a spirit of innovation that’s
made Fastenal the industry leader in logistics, VMI –
and now, having come full circle, industrial vending.
Inspired by that same spirit, our FAST Solutions
represent an extremely simple, cost-effective way
to reduce consumption, eliminate inventory and
increase productivity. The key is what we call “The
Machine Behind the Machine” – all of the local
Fastenal people working to keep the machines filled
and running smoothly, so their customers can focus
on their core business.
With thousands of machines in place, and thousands
of Fastenal people servicing them, we’ve come a
long way toward realizing Mr. Kierlin’s vision. The
technology is beyond what anyone could have
imagined in 1967, but in a sense it’s based on
his original blueprint – the same one that’s made
Fastenal the industry’s most innovative supplier for
nearly 45 years and counting.
Bob Kierlin, Fastenal's founder and current chairman of
the board, stands next to a recently built prototype of his
original fastener vending machine concept.

MACHINE THE
THE
HIND BE MACHINE
When you buy or lease a competitive vending machine, you get … a vending machine. But with Fastenal, the machine is just
part of a complete inventory control solution powered by local Fastenal people. Here’s a look at the components that make up
Fastenal’s Machine Behind the Machine.
Local Stores, Local People
With more than 2,600 stores and 9,000 local representatives across North
America, the products, service and support you need are literally right
around the corner. Because we’re local, we can stock the supplies you
need within minutes of your facility and keep just the right amount flowing
to your point of use (something that’s made us the industry leader in VMI
for decades). When stock runs low, your machine sends an automated
notification to the store, and your Fastenal representative drives over to
refill it – a completely paperless, hands-free process that saves you time
and money.
In addition to making sure your machine is always filled, your
local Fastenal rep will work closely with you to oversee a smooth
implementation, offer suggestions to continually optimize your product
mix, handle any issues that may arise, and make sure your vending
program is delivering the business results you want to see.
4
5. Regional Build Centers
The Machine Behind the Machine
Your local store is supported by the nearest of 13 regional FAST Build Centers, each dedicated to building, testing, installing
and servicing machines for local customers. This isn’t some centralized third-party facility – these are local Fastenal
employees who are accountable, dedicated, and motivated to make sure your vending program is a long-term success.
Working within your local Fastenal distribution center, FAST Build Center personnel will custom-configure a machine to
meet your product needs and test those items to make sure they vend reliably, in the amounts you need. They’ll coordinate
installation, deliver your machine on one of our trucks, install it at your desired location, provide on-site training for your
personnel, and quickly handle any needed repairs moving forward. All of these services are provided at no cost to you.
The close relationship between your Fastenal store and the local Build Center eliminates conflicts, barriers and delays,
resulting in a smooth process from signed contract to installation and the kind of service you’ll never get from some third-
party provider located hundreds of miles away.

6. Regional sales Specialists
The machine behind the machine
Our fleet of FAST Solutions display vans allows us to bring the
machines and trained Solutions Specialists to your doorstep for
hands-on demos and in-depth Q&A – at no cost, with no obligation.
A local Solutions Specialist will drive to your site at your convenience,
allowing you and other decision makers to walk out of your front door
and step inside a fully-functional demo environment. Each van is
equipped with live machines as well as a computer system and flat
screen to display how the software works. You’ll operate the machine,
see how the software controls and tracks usage, and gain a solid
understanding of the value proposition and whether it’s a good fit for
your company. It’s an experience that goes well beyond a flyer or a
PowerPoint.
National Distribution & Transportation
An industrial vending machine is useless if it’s not stocked with the supplies
you need, when your people need them. That’s why it’s important to know
that your FAST machine will be backed by Fastenal's industry-leading
distribution system: 2,600+ local stores, serviced by 15 regional distribution
centers, moving millions of products, from thousands of quality-certified
manufacturers, on nearly 6,000 company-owned delivery vehicles – ALL
working to provide the right products, right when and where they're needed.
The benefits to you include vendor consolidation opportunities,
minimal hassles and “emergencies,” reduced freight costs, and
peace of mind knowing that the world’s most efficient industrial
supply chain ends at your point of use.
national Support & Training
Again, our Build Centers provide on-site training when the machine is installed. But if
you need additional help with utilizing the reporting software, we will set up a custom
WebEx training to walk your personnel through the process and answer your questions.
Additional trainings can be provided to meet your needs.
We also operate a 24/7 technical support call center, which your Fastenal rep can call
for immediate troubleshooting support. Our machines are built for simple operation and
powered by web-based software, meaning most issues can be resolved on the spot with
the support of our call center technicians.

7. the True cost of "free"
The True cost of free
Certain vending providers are touting “free” programs, but that term often glosses over a range of hidden fees that don’t
become apparent until the system is in place. Before you decide on a solution, it’s important to understand these hidden
expenses and ask the right questions.
At Fastenal, your business is too important for us to “nickel and dime” you with hidden fees. That’s why we offer a simple,
straightforward program with no surprises. It’s also why we back our solutions with local, hands-on service and support. Our
Machine Behind the Machine allows us to allows us to absorb virtually all of the costs associated with vending – including the
hidden ones that can make those “free” programs so expensive.

20. cutting tool machines Frequently asked questions
cutting tool machines Frequently asked questions
Is this the right machine for my business?
Fastenal's cutting tool machines are specifically designed for machine shop work cells where BOTH round tools and inserts are
consumed at a high volume. This usually means a manufacturer that produces the same items repetitively within the work cells
supported by the machines.
How many SKUs can be put into a cutting tool machine?
• FAST 2000CT: 18 SKUs with 300 inventory positions. (Insert Capacity - 12 SKUs x 20 per SKU = 480 Individual Part Locations;
Round Tool Capacity - 6 SKUs x 10 per SKU = 60 Individual Part Locations)
• FAST 4000CT: 40 SKUs with 640 inventory positions. (Insert Capacity - 24 SKUs x 20 per SKU = 240 Individual Part Locations;
Round Tool Capacity - 16 SKUs x 10 per SKU = 160 Individual Part Locations)
Does every space in a particular machine need to be filled?
No. Customers frequently decide to make changes as they gain experience with the machine. We do require 85% of the machine's
capacity be filled on the day of install.
Can the machines be altered to add or subtract how many round tools or inserts they dispense?
The machines have defined positions for inserts and round tools which cannot be altered. Since most stores sell more round
tools than inserts, a common question is whether the insert trays can be replaced with round tool trays. The answer is no. Unlike
the FAST 5000, these machines have a defined purpose and cannot be altered. In most cases, the FAST 5000 is a better fit for
customers who want to vend round tools only.
Will products have trouble vending properly?
The cutting tool machine incorporates Verified Vend Technology which checks and verifies the accuracy of each vend. Most of the
locations in these machines are based on product dimensions – it either goes into a Large Stack or a Small Stack. If the machine
is loaded correctly, historical data shows a 99.9% accuracy rate. Fastenal customers dispense many thousands of items every day
without problems.
Who can I talk to about technical questions and Fastenal's cutting tool offerings?
Because selling cutting tools requires a specific knowledge of the products and the industry, Fastenal has local Manufacturing/
Metalworking Specialists who can work directly with you to talk about our products and programs.
Their group email is _mfg_outside_sales@fastenal.com.
What advantages do Fastenal's cutting tool machines have over other machines that dispense
cutting tools?
Because Fastenal's machines are smaller, they can be positioned where the tools are used. This point-of-use access offers several
advantages vs. having a single large, expensive machine in a central location, including reduced travel time and reduced wait
time (because usage is spread over multiple machines). Another benefit is the ability to dispense inserts either one at a time or in
package quantities. This gives our customers total visibility and control of their tool usage.

21. fast 10000sl SERIES SM
Fast 10000SL series
Benefits compared to traditional industrial vending solutions:
SM
More SKUs
Multiple sensor-driven cabinets, shelves, compartments, counters and bins enable the machines to accommodate a much greater
number of SKUs. The range of available sensor-based measurement technologies further widens the variety of the products that
can be vended.
Greater Product Density
The design of the new systems makes more products available in less space, minimizing the "cost per bin."
Faster, Simpler Transactions
With traditional industrial vending machines, users enter pre-selections via the user interface and wait for the machine to
dispense. This process is dramatically streamlined with the FAST 10000SL. After being authenticated and granted access to the
cabinet, the user simply takes the desired item(s) directly from the machine. The embedded sensors automatically capture the
details of the transaction and update the inventory in the system on a real-time basis. This automated process provides users with
more visibility of the items and more comfort in making selections. It also increases the efficiency and speed of user transactions.
It is amazingly easy to use.
Easier Inventory Control and Management (Faster Re-stocking)
The new hardware design requires less special packaging, while making it faster and easier to load and dispense products. It will
greatly streamline the inventory management process and require significantly less time to maintain and replenish.
Multiple Customer Choices
A FAST 10000SL cabinet is composed of modules that contain positions with sensors for individual SKUs. The modules are
interchangeable, making it easy to configure the unit to meet each customers’ application requirements. The capabilities
presented in the different models (single-door cabinet, cabinet-drawer hybrid, and sensor-driven lockers) make multiple choices
available for customers.

Restocking and storage design ensures “first in, first out” dispensing orders for all selections. Adjustable back panels secure the
storage of the drinks in different sizes, making it convenient to restock and easy to dispense.
Setting bottle vending can be easily configured in the Service Mode.
• Bottle setting is normally used with single-depth loading of bottles. This setting allows the product cradle to continue
rotating a few more seconds so that it is positioned closer to the loading zone, reducing the customer’s waiting time when
the product cradle is activated for the next vend.
The impact sensor-driven delivery system ensures successful vending of the selected product and accurately monitors each
transaction. The drop sensor on the delivery chute detects whether a product has been vended after a selection is made. The
controller board located on the back of the main door controls the drop sensor sensitivity.
The cabinet is refrigerated to keep the drinks cold for better enjoyment. The desired temperate set point, range and scale can all
be easily configured in the Service Mode. The refrigeration unit is a hermetically sealed and completely self-contained modular
unit charged with ozone-friendly R-134a refrigerant. The complete refrigeration unit can be removed if there is a service problem.

Technology overview
1. Technologies and System Requirements for the FAST SolutionsSM Vending Machines
FAST Solution machines are Internet appliances that integrate the best available vending technology and secure Internet
technology. To operate, they only require a 110V AC power connection and an ethernet connection. They use an embedded
operating system on the controller board and do not require any software installation. They can be installed inside a company
local area network behind the firewall or anywhere that has a connection to the Internet. FAST machines communicate to a
remote web server via port 80 or port 8576 requests. The communication from a FAST machine to the web server is designed
to be outbound only. Machines, devices or computers cannot establish a connection to FAST Solutions directly. The machines
use either static IP or DHCP client.ts.

Fast 5000 Router Web Server
Web Server
Data generated by the machine is transmitted via a secured tunnel through the Internet to the web server. Only outbound requests are initiated from the machine.
No device, machine or computer can establish a connection to the machine. The web server only listens to port 80 or port 8576 requests.
3. FAST Solution Machines Communicate with the Web Server through a Secured Tunnel
The machines communicate with the web server over TCP/IP through a secured data tunnel. All transactions between the
machine and the web server are encrypted. When a machine is connected with the Internet, the machine will automatically
register itself to the web server. The machine will not be allowed to handle transactions until it is provisioned by an authorized
administrator from the web site using a special tool. The web server will establish a unique identity for each machine. All
vending transactions are logged in a SQL database. Each machine will check in with the web server every 30 minutes to
report that it is still operating correctly. Each transaction generated by the machine is approximately 2k bits. The network
traffic generated by the machines is relatively small and should not interfere the performance of a local area network.

32. Frequently asked questions
Frequently asked questions
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the best way to identify which parts to put into a FAST machine?
The short answer is: any items you want control over, including mission-critical, high-dollar, and high usage consumables.
Will products have trouble vending properly?
Fastenal tests and certifies each product for vending to ensure reliability. All FAST Solutions equipment incorporates patented
Verified Vend™ technology, which checks and verifies the accuracy of each vend. If the machine is loaded correctly, you will enjoy
99.99% trouble-free vending.
Why will certain items not dispense from the FAST 5000/3000 machines?
Due to size, shape, packaging, or other concerns, certain items will not dispense reliably from the FAST 5000/3000. These items
are well suited for our locker systems.
What are the functions of the FAST Locker units?
The FAST Locker units are designed to provide controlled access to larger products and/or items that need to be checked in and
out. Here’s a look at the different functions supported by the FAST Locker technology:
Single Item Dispense - 100% secure. There is one item in the locker at a time, and one item is dispensed at a time. Our
consignment plan can be used in these situations.
Multi-Item Dispense - Multiple quantities of the same item are placed in a single locker location, and the worker is trusted
to take only one per transaction. Because this function is less secure, no consignment option is available.
Check-In / Check-Out - The locker unit is programmed for check-in/check-out features. For example, workers can check
out tools, use them, bring them back, and check the tools back in. This option allows for competitors’ product to be stored in
the locker units.
Will Call or Drop Box - The locker location is used as a secure will call area, or drop box, for product delivery by the
Fastenal rep. The system can be secured so that only the person who placed the order can open the cabinet to “take delivery.”
Does the machine know if an item stored in a locker unit needs to be locked down for a period of
time in order for a part to be recharged?
Yes, an indication can be made within the software so that a locker cannot be accessed for a specific period of time while a part is
recharging.
Can a FAST machine limit the number of items an employee can dispense in a given time period?
Yes, the machines can restrict the number of certain items an employee can access within specified time periods - e.g., per hour,
per shift, per day, per year, etc.
32
33. Frequently Asked Questions cont.
Frequently asked questions
Can I control which items my employees have access to with a FAST machine?
Yes, “allocation codes” can be used to control access. An allocation code is a rule that applies to all employees in a particular
group. For example, you can apply a rule so that everyone who is a member of the production department can vend one pair
of gloves per day. Allocation codes can also be used to track cost by department, work orders, job numbers and other process
variables.
How many codes can be entered at the time of dispense?
The FAST 5000 has the ability to accept the following information:
1. Employee ID (or employee code) and PIN number. The display on the machine is limited to 64 digits.
2. Up to six allocation codes - for example, department, job number, or location. Each code can be up to 20 digits long.
How many items can an employee vend at once?
You can specify how many products an employee can vend following each “swipe,” with a limit of 10 vends per swipe. However,
the helix will always spin one time per selection, dispensing a single item or package. So, for example, if a user wants three items,
three items, he or she must vend that position three times in order to dispense those products.
How does the billing work?
There are two types of bills a FAST program customer will receive:
1) FAST Program Fees (i.e., the software hosting fee), which will be billed out of Fastenal headquarters.
2) Product Billing - The servicing Fastenal store will bill for the products consumed. Stores have access to weekly customer
usage out of the FAST machines and invoice for those transactions accordingly.
How does the vending machine replenishment work?
The system uses “min,” “max” and “critical” inventory levels to notify the local Fastenal store when items need to be replenished.
When an item falls below the min level, the Fastenal store receives an email and/or text notification. The Fastenal representative
then logs into the software and runs a replenishment report to view any “below min” inventory required to bring the machine back
to a full state.
Can the machine be put in dusty environments?
FAST machines come equipped with an industrial-grade seal around the door designed to keep out small particles. Site personnel
should clean the glass and wipe the key pad and trays every few weeks. Some types of readers do not operate well in extremely
dusty environments. In these situations, it is recommended that the machine be set up for keypad (rather than ID card scan)
operation.
Can the FAST 5000 be utilized outdoors?
Yes, FAST 5000 machines are often installed at construction sites and other outdoor environments. However, the machine must
be protected on three sides with an overhang. Products that cannot be exposed to temperature/humidity changes should not be
placed in machines stationed outdoors.
What is the suggested temperature range for the machines?
The standard FAST 5000 and Auto Lockers are designed to operate in a temperature range between 55 and 130 degrees
Fahrenheit. LED lights can be installed (at an additional cost), in which case the range can drop as low as 0 degrees Fahrenheit.
What languages are supported by the machine?
The software is in English, but the machine can support English, Spanish and French. Users can select a language within the
software for each employee so that users see the appropriate language displayed on the machine when vending.
