History
Establishment of a university for the armed forces educational and training
institutes was a long felt need. National security, war strategy, medical,
engineering and technology related to higher studies are in high demand at
present. To keep pace and to be at par with the fast developing world, the
national higher studies, research enabling modern knowledge and creating

scope for education and studies are the obligations to be fulfilled. In order to
expand and integrate the existing educational and training institutes of the
armed forces, they were needed to be brought under a single umbrella or
authority. Thereby, the establishment of "Bangladesh University of
Professionals," (BUP) took place in that process and came in to being as 31st
public university of Bangladesh on 05 June 2008. BUP is a unique public
university run by the armed forces with upholding the motto "EXCELLENCE
THROUGH KNOWLEDGE". The youngest university is confident in furthering
the knowledge in the field of national security, technology and modern science
to achieve the desired human resources development of the country.

Used 5s quality tools
At BUP Operating activities
S1: Sort
▪ Place “Red tag” for categorization of items to identify unnecessary items
in BUP.
▪ Move unnecessary items of BUP to central stored area.
▪ Free up valuable BUP’s floor space and classroom.
▪ Finding abnormality of equipment and tools of BUP such as projectors,
table, chairs white board.

S2: Set
▪ Labeling, numbering, zoning of BUP’s each element for clear
identification. Classrooms, tables, chairs, projectors and others
necessary item should be numbering.
▪ Set necessary items matching with each floor, classroom and equipment
to minimize unnecessary movement and transportation. As a result, we
can easily identify which floor’s chair or projector this is.
▪ BUP needed file number for easy finding.
S3: Shine
▪ Daily sweeping and mopping of floor, bathroom, corridor, classroom,
office room of BUP.
▪ Regular cleaning and maintenance of tables, chairs, projectors, white
board, air-condition of BUP.
▪ Periodical check for changes in equipment and the service area such as:
BUP’s water purifier, microphone and computer needed to
maintenance. It helps operating classes without any disturbance.

▪ IPC activities such as hand hygiene, waste segregation is also part of
shine. So, BUP need to provide hand sanitizer, handwash, tissue paper,
white board wiper and hygienic water.
S4: Standardize
▪ BUP need to provide a general guideline for the teachers and students.
▪ BUP have a rules and regulation policy that need to follow all officers,
faculty members and students.
▪ BUP need to provide a checklist to regulate students and faculties.
▪ BUP has to develop a reporting policy to evaluate faculty and admin.
▪ BUP need to follow a supply chain policy to fulfill the equipment
needed.
▪ It needed to standardized common symbols.

S5: Sustain
▪ Regular progress reporting of BUPs teacher, students and others
employees.
▪ Refresher training activities of BUPs faculty and employees.
▪ Periodical evaluation of 5S activities with proper advices for
continuation and further improvements of BUP members.
▪ Appreciation, recognition and awarding on good 5S activities of BUP
employees.
▪ BUP has to remain using 5S corner, new letters, good practice sheet etc.
In the conclusion BUP can generate more idea, ensure clean environment,
make effective operation activities, ensure good combination of insides and
outsides, ensure discipline within university and finally create a good image of
BUP by following 5s. So, it is an important tool for creating efficient operation
activities.
