Assigned as Questlon 10 | A particular atam happens to have electron energy levels at these
energies:-2.0 ev,-4.2 ev, and-6.7 ey, With these energy levels, whlich of the following photon
energies would we expect to observe from a gas tube that contained excited versions of these
atoms? Select all that apply. Multiple answers: You can select more than one option A 2.0 ev
OF6.2 ev OG 6.7e O H 8.7 e 12.9 ev
Solution
Ans
The atoms have electron energy levels : - 2.0 eV(highest excited state) > - 4.2eV > - 6.7 eV
(lowest state)
When electrons jumps from higher excited states to lower states, they emit photons
Now electron can jump from
1) -2.0 eV to -4.2 eV giving away a photon of energy E = - 2.0 - (- 4.2) = 2.2 eV
2) -2.0 eV to -6.7 eV giving away a photon of energy E = - 2.0 - (- 6.7) = 4.7 eV (maximum
energy)
3) -4.2 eV to -6.7 eV state with a photon of energy E = (- 4.2) - ( - 6.7) = 2.5 eV
