- So what we see happening is that the world of technology is changing. It's a huge trend. The pendulum is shifting to a new paradigm and new strategic opportunity. - HP StorageWorks SAN Solutions HP Confidential Lets examine the first problem, and that is that there are new requirements placed on storage by server virtualization. The main reason that storage is affected is that many virtual server implementations is the VMs reside on shared storage such as a SAN. You are sold a solution that meets today’s storage and performance needs. That may work initially, but over time as business needs dictate, new applications may need to come online. It’s so simple to spin up new VMs, that it VM Sprawl. Virtual Sprawl: Although your servers may have the resources to create them, the storage that was meant to adequately run 50 VMs is not built to run 75. When capacity and performance issues are no longer tolerable, traditional storage solutions often require expensive upgrades. Expensive add-on features: Server virtualization features that provide high availability, disaster recovery and cloning require advanced storage features to make them work. If the storage company can even offer them, they usually cost plenty. Management complexities: If you think managing one SAN can be daunting enough, imagine managing three or four! Many SANs have very limited scalability, and when they hit there limits you need to buy new SAN that is managed separately, which just makes more work for you.

- Now with VAAI, the data movement is optimized within the SAN Hence, there is minimal CPU and Network Overhead Resulting in a Quicker migration. So what took 30 minutes to 2.5 hrs to migration 100GB VM, now the same task can be completed in 5-10 minutes… P4000 is different from other architectures that do VAAI because storage system is a controller and every time you scale the P4000 SAN it’s VAAI offload abilities scale with it.
