El Greco: DOMÉNIKOS THEOTOKÓPOULOS (CRETE, 1541 – TOLEDO, 1614) Portrait of An Old Man (so called self-portrait of El Greco), circa 1595–1600, oil on canvas, 52.7 × 46.7 cm, Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York City, U.S. El Greco (&quot;The Greek&quot;, was a painter, sculptor, and architect of the Spanish Renaissance. He usually signed his paintings in Greek letters with his full name, Doménicos Theotokópoulos (Greek: Δομήνικος Θεοτοκόπουλος ), to show his Greek identity sometimes followed by Kres (Cretan).

FACTS: <ul><li>El Greco was born in Crete, at that time part of the Republic of Venice, and the centre of Post-Byzantine art. </li></ul><ul><li>He trained and became a master within that tradition before traveling at 26 to Venice , as other Greek artists had done. </li></ul><ul><li>In 1570 he moved to Rome , where he opened a workshop and executed a series of works. </li></ul><ul><li>In 1577 he moved to Toledo, Spain , where he lived and worked until his death. </li></ul><ul><li>In Toledo, El Greco received several major commissions and produced his best known paintings. </li></ul><ul><li>El Greco is known for : </li></ul><ul><ul><li>elongated figures, </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Use of cool colors (green, blue, gray) </li></ul></ul><ul><li>Some scientists believe that El Greco’s eyesight may have contributed to his style of elongated figures. </li></ul>

It wasn’t liked by the King, and El Greco left Madrid for Toledo. Esta obra fue pintada para el rey Felipe II, con la intención de establecerse en Madrid como pintor de la Corte.
