Carthage was founded in 813 BC by Queen Elissa and grew to become a wealthy city in the Mediterranean. It engaged in three Punic Wars with Rome between 264 BC and 146 BC. In the first war, Carthage was led by Hannibal and lost control of Sicily. Hannibal then invaded Italy during the second war but failed to defeat Rome. The third war resulted in Rome destroying Carthage completely in 146 BC and making the area a territory of the Roman Empire.
