Journal Prompt: Describing the Holidays in Second Person
“You avoid the big presents, because you know it’s usually something
incredibly tiny. So you go for a smallish sized box with green striped
wrapping that crinkled when you picked it up. As you unwrap it, your
heart sinks because you know this is not your kind of present. It’s a Swiss
Army Emergency Radio. You try to act excited, but your smile fades as the
game goes on and no one steals from you. Out of pity for your poor
choice of gifts, your dad decides to steal from you.”
Journal Prompts: Describing the Room of A Faded Movie Star
“The doorknob was a bit sticky; it took a good amount of
strength to open it. Probably because it hasn’t been opened in 60
some-odd years. As cracked open, I flipped on the lights. A dim
glow added little to the dark atmosphere, but it helped me make
things out. The first I smelled was the smell of mothballs and
decaying paper. A grand-looking bed had been strangely placed in
the exact center of the room. There were old, faded, and yellow
movie posters that curled off the off-pink walls. A classic
Hollywood-style mirror was to the right of the enormous bed.”

I Think it’s important for people to speak their minds because
people can stand out from the rest because of their opinions.

“I never fully realized the appalling disadvantages of a cinder environment till one day
the gang to which I belonged found itself engaged in a war with the white boys who lived
beyond the tracks. As usual we laid down our cinder barrage, thinking that this would wipe
the white boys out. But they replied with a steady bombardment of broken bottles. We
doubled our cinder barrage, but they hid behind trees, hedges, and the sloping embankments
of their lawns. Having no such fortifications, we retreated to the brick pillars of our homes.
During the retreat a broken milk bottle caught me behind the ear, opening a deep gash which
bled profusely. The sight of blood pouring over my face completely demoralized our ranks.
My fellow-combatants left me standing paralyzed in the center of the yard, and scurried for
their homes. A kind neighbor saw me and rushed me to a doctor, who took three stitches in
my neck.” (Richard Wright, The Ethics Of Living Jim Crow, American Studies at the
University of Virginia)
“A new thing in costume appears -- the flaring hoopskirt, for example -- and the
passers-by are shocked, and the irreverent laugh. Six months later everybody is
reconciled; the fashion has established itself; it is admired, now, and no one
laughs. Public opinion resented it before, public opinion accepts it now, and is
happy in it. Why? Was the resentment reasoned out? Was the acceptance
reasoned out? No. The instinct that moves to conformity did the work. It is our
nature to conform; it is a force which not many can successfully resist.” (Mark
Twain, Corn Pone Opinions, paulgraham.com)
