Hearst that had been written by the Spanish minister at Washington, in which that diplomat expressed contempt for McKinley. </li></ul><ul><li>Another cause was the sinking of the U.S. battleship The Maine in the Havana harbor on February 15, 1898, which killed 260 men. </li></ul><ul><li>Another cause were the eyewitness reports by members of the U.S. Congress on the reconcentrado policy (concentration camp) in Cuba. </li></ul>

The Results and Consequences <ul><li>The Treaty of Paris resulted in the United States gaining control over Guam and Puerto Rico. </li></ul><ul><li>It also resulted in Cuba gaining its independence from Spain. </li></ul><ul><li>The United States also kept control over The Philippines in exchange for twenty million dollars. </li></ul>
