What caused the war in Iraq? <ul><li>Many events led up to the start of the war in Iraq, but the one event that initially ignited the war was the tragedy of September 11, 2001. On this day, terrorist hijacked two Boeing 747 passenger jets and piloted them into the sides of the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center. </li></ul>

What caused the war in Iraq? <ul><li>On March 19th, 2003, George W. Bush declared war on Iraq. He gave his address he said that: every effort will be made to protect the lives of innocent civilians, the campaign will be “broad and concerted” and will use “decisive force”, he also said that the only outcome that will be accepted is victory, lastly he stated that America’s freedom will be defended and freedom will be brought to others. </li></ul>

What is the War in Iraq? <ul><li>The War in Iraq is an ongoing conflict which began on March 20, 2003 with the invasion of Iraq, led by the United States. </li></ul>

Why the United States declared war on Iraq. <ul><li>President Bush gave congress three reasons to declare war on Iraq. </li></ul><ul><li>Saddam Hussein is our greatest threat. </li></ul><ul><li>Iraq has Weapons of Mass Destruction (WMD) that violated the 1991 agreement to unconditionally give them up. </li></ul><ul><li>To instill democracy in Iraq. </li></ul><ul><li>Although these are the reasons that President Bush gave for going to war, the true reason that people believe that we went to war is for the oil. If the United States lost control over the oil in the Persian Gulf, their position as a dominate world power would be questioned. </li></ul>

What has happened in Iraq? <ul><li>Military forces in Iraq have accomplished many things. The have abolished the Hussein régime, instilled democracy as the new Iraqi government, they have also captured, tried, and convicted Saddam Hussein. He was charged with war crimes and was executed, he was hung. Even though we have accomplished all this, United States military forces are still in Iraq. They are trying to secure oil in the Persian Gulf and rid Iraq of terrorist groups. </li></ul>

Results and Consequences of the War <ul><li>The war in Iraq has been going on for 4 years now. The war has/will have many consequences including: economical consequences, high death tolls, and the destruction of Iraq and the Iraqi culture. The economical consequences are seriously effecting the Iraqi people. Unemployment levels have gone as high as 60%. Reforms have been imposed like an end to fuel, food, and health subsides. The death toll in Iraq is estimated to be about 655,000 people. An astonishing amount for a war that has only lasted 4 years. </li></ul>

Results and Consequences of the War <ul><li>A plan is being discussed about removing troops from Iraq, but has not been decided yet. Many of the other countries involved have already began to pull out of Iraq. No one truly knows how much longer this war will last. </li></ul>
