SELF LEARNING ACTIVITY - ASSESSMENT OF LEARNING
ASSIGNMENT SET NO. 1
TOPIC CHARACTERISTICS/
DEFINITION/ DISCUSSION
REFLECTION REFERENCES
1.What is Assessment? an integral part of instruction, as it
determines whether or not the goals
of education are being met.
Assessment affects decisions about
grades, placement, advancement,
instructional needs, curriculum, and,
in some cases, funding. Assessment
inspire us to ask these hard questions:
"Are we teaching what we think we
are teaching?" "Are students learning
what they are supposed to be
learning?" "Is there a way to teach
the subject better, thereby promoting
better learning?"
Assessment is a key component of
learning because it helps students
learn. When students are able to
see how they are doing in a class,
they are able to determine whether
or not they understand course
material.
It can also help motivate students.
If students know they are doing
poorly, they may begin to work
harder and think of alternatives on
how to cope with the difficulties.

2.What is Assessment of;
Learning?
refers to strategies designed to
confirm what students know,
demonstrate whether or not they have
met curriculum outcomes or the
goals of their individualized
programs, or to certify proficiency
and make decisions about students’
future programs or placements. It is
designed to provide evidence of
achievement to parents, other
educators, the students themselves,
and sometimes to outside groups
It is really important to be able to
establish a well-defined assessment
tool suitable and will cater diverse
type of learners. With this
educators will be able to adjust
objectives and expectations based
on the learning competencies set by
the department.

.mb.ca/k12/assess/ro

3. What are the importance
of assessment of learning in
the teaching and learning
process?
Assessment plays a major role in how
students learn, their motivation to
learn, and how teachers teach.
Assessment is used for various
purposes.
 Assessment for learning: where
assessment helps teachers gain
insight into what students
understand in order to plan and
guide instruction, and provide
helpful feedback to students.
 Assessment as learning: where
students develop an awareness of
how they learn and use that
awareness to adjust and advance
their learning, taking an increased
responsibility for their learning.
As teachers and students work
towards the achievement of
curriculum outcomes, assessment
plays a constant role in informing
instruction, guiding the student’s
next steps, and checking progress
and achievement. Teachers use
many different processes and
strategies for classroom
assessment, and adapt them to suit
the assessment purpose and needs
of individual students.
https://www.edu.gov
.mb.ca/k12/assess/ro
le.html
 Assessment of learning: where
assessment informs students,
teachers and parents, as well as the
broader educational community, of
achievement at a certain point in
time in order to celebrate success,
plan interventions and support
continued progress.
4. DEFINE THE
FOLLOWING:
a. Test a form of assessment and refers
to procedures used to measure a
learners' learning at a specific point
in time and often involves collecting
information in numerical form. ...
Assessment covers a broader range
of procedures than testing and
includes both formal and informal
measures.
Educators must be aware of the
different forms of Test in order to
cater the diverse set of learners.
Rubrics of the test should be
evident and the constructions of
the test should always be standard
https://www.profess
orjackrichards.com/
difference-between-
testing-and-
assessment
b. Measurement the term used to describe the
assignment of a number to a given
assessment. The number can be a raw
score or a score based on a normal
distribution curve. The process of
quantifying this number is separate
from using this information to
evaluate student outcomes and
achievement.
Accurately measuring student
progress with reliable assessments
and then evaluating the
information to make instruction
more efficient, effective and
interesting is what must do.
Educators who are willing to make
thoughtful and intentional changes
in instruction based on more than

and more highly motivated
students.
c. Assessment the process of documenting, usually
in measurable terms, knowledge,
skills, attitudes and beliefs. 
Assessment in education is the
process of gathering, interpreting,
recording & using information about
pupils’ responses to an educational
task.
Assessments help teachers to not
only identify and monitor
learners’ strengths, weaknesses,
learning and progress but also help
them to better plan and conduct
instruction.
(Harlen, Gipps,
Broadfoot, Nuttal,
1992)
d. Evaluation is concerned with a whole range of
issues in and beyond education;
lessons, programs, and skills can be
evaluated. It produce a global view of
achievements usually based on many
different types of information such as
observation of lessons, test scores,
assessment reports, course
documents or interviews with
students and teachers.
A well-planned and carefully
executed evaluation will reap
more benefits for all stakeholders
than an evaluation that is thrown
together hastily and
retrospectively. Though you may
feel that you lack the time,
resources, and expertise to carry
out an evaluation, learning about
evaluation early-on and planning
carefully will help you navigate
the process

e. Traditional Assessment evaluates the learning and retaining
capacity of a child. It analyses how
much of the provided material or
syllabus has been acquired by the
student. It also helps educators or
teachers to compare the
performances of different students.
Traditional assessment methods
have the disadvantage of lacking
real-world context. Students
answer questions one by one
without the need to apply long-
term critical reasoning skills. They
also lack chances to demonstrate
their reasoning skills despite a
lack of knowledge about a
question's specific subject matter
https://www.ecolegl
obale.com/blog/tradi
tional-assessment-
vs-alternative-
assessment/
f. Alternative Assessment is a student-centered approach and it
focuses on the level of the
application of knowledge and skills
to real life, taking the individual
features of the students into
consideration.
alternative assessment enables
students to further develop their
skills and abilities. Furthermore it
provides chances for teachers to
see the levels of students’ gained
skills and abilities, and also the
limits of these skills and
abilities—all during instructional
processes.

studies. B. Tay, &

g. Authentic Assessment the idea of using creative learning
experiences to test students' skills
and knowledge in realistic situations.
Authentic assessment measures
students' success in a way that's
relevant to the skills required of them
once they've finished your course or
degree program.
As an educator goal of authentic
assessment is to enhance the
learning process and help students
gain knowledge while completing
tasks that are beneficial to their
“real-world” experiences.

5. What are the purpose of
Classroom Assessment?
is both a teaching approach and a set
of techniques? The approach is that
the more you know about what and
how students are learning, the better
you can plan learning activities to
structure your teaching. The
techniques are mostly simple, non-
graded, anonymous, in-class
activities that give both you and
your students useful feedback on the
teaching-learning process.
As teachers, we have to monitor
the progress our students make
each day, week, quarter and year.
Classroom assessments are one of
the most crucial educational tools
for teachers. When assessments
are properly developed and
interpreted, they can help
teachers better understand their
students learning progress and
needs, by providing the resources
to collect evidence that indicates

uny.edu/academicas

what information their students
know and what skills they can
perform. Assessments help
teachers to not only identify and
monitor learners’ strengths,
weaknesses, learning and
progress but also help them to
better plan and conduct
instruction. For these reasons,
ongoing classroom assessment is
the glue that binds teaching and
learning together and allows
educators to monitor their
efficacy and student learning.
6. Compare and Contrast
Measurement and
Evaluation?
Measurement and evaluation are
processes that are used to provide
information about a person or object
and their performance. ...
Measurement is all about the
numbers and being able to quantify
the performance or the abilities.
Evaluation assists with using the data
and information to judge success or
failure.
The qualities are measured in the
evaluation as a whole. In
measurement, the qualities are
measured as separate units.
