35. A Wife for a Life
Teacher Jeissa
January 30, 2023
Overview of the one act
play by Eugene O’ Neill
36. The play takes place in the
late 1800s in the “Wild West”
of the United States.
There are two main
characters: the older man
and the younger man (Jack).
They have been gold mining
partners for one year exactly.
37. In the opening scene, the old
man receives a message for
his mining partner, Jack (the
younger man).
Jack is not there. Both men
are in business together, so
that old man opens the
message, in case it relates to
their mining work.
38. “I am waiting. Come”
This is what the telegram
that was sent to the young
man says. The old man put
the message in his pocket
and forgot about it.
39. As the play progresses, the
audience learns that the old
man and young man met one
year ago. On that day, the
young man had saved the old
man’s life on a river in a
different gold mining town.
Since then, the two have
worked side-by-side.
40. Early in the act, Jack shows
the old man, gold that has
been found on two separate
parts of their gold mining
operations.
41. The two start to celebrate
their good fortune. The old
man was surprised to hear
that the young man wanted
to give up the gold mining
lifestyle, to be with a woman
that he loves.
42. The two agree that they may
need more workers. Jack
volunteers to go East (New
York) to recruit more
workers. Jack says that is
where his love lives.
The old man starts to ask
Jack about his love interest
and how they met.
43. Jack met Yvette at a mining
camp a couple of years ago in
Peru. She was married to an
older man who was a drunk
and did not pay her much
attention and treated her
poorly. Jack wanted to be
with Yvette. She cared for
Jack as well, but refused to
be unfaithful to her older
husband.
44. Yvette sent a picture to Jack a
year ago. She said that her
husband was convinced that
she was cheating on him, and
that he left on a mission to
find him. Yvette told Jack that
if her husband does not
return in one year, she will
send for Jack (as she can
legally separate from the
husband).
45. The old man realizes that he
gold mined in the same town
in Peru at roughly the same
time. As Jack shares more
details and shows the picture
that he received a year ago,
the old man realizes that
Yvette is his wife.
46. After talking, the old man
agreed that Jack should head
out East (New York) to recruit
more workers for their gold
mining business.
The old man knew that Jack
would be seeing Yvette. The
old man wished Jack the
best, and never admitted to
Jack that she was his wife.
47. The old man reached for his
gun on two occasions. He
never showed Jack his
reaction, or that Yvette was
his wife.
The old man passed along
the message (“I am waiting.
Come.) to Jack. Jack was
extremely happy.
