Trying to define “Smart city”
6. Intelligent Services for Digital Cities 2013 - Trento's perspective about "Smart City" - ing. Giacomo Fioroni 6
Smart City is
A developed urban area that creates
sustainable economic development
and high quality of life
by excelling in multiple key areas
7. Intelligent Services for Digital Cities 2013 - Trento's perspective about "Smart City" - ing. Giacomo Fioroni 7
Smart City is... (2)
Excelling in these key areas
can be done
so
through strong
human capital - social capital - ICT infrastructure
8. Intelligent Services for Digital Cities 2013 - Trento's perspective about "Smart City" - ing. Giacomo Fioroni 8
About “ICT infrastracture”: 3 layers
» The technologies transform cities in a living organism
made up of several layers connected among them.
Layer of processing and storage
Layer in contact with territory and citizens
Layer to communicate
9. Intelligent Services for Digital Cities 2013 - Trento's perspective about "Smart City" - ing. Giacomo Fioroni 9
About ICT infrastracture – 3 layers(1)
» The first layer is in contact with territory and its
citizens
» It's made up of frameworks that receive and send data:
» sensors,
» cameras,
» smartphones and mobile devices.
» Represents a new and revolutionary condition that, for
the first time in mankind history, enables high levels of:
» participation
» (and, at the same time, of) control of activities
10. Intelligent Services for Digital Cities 2013 - Trento's perspective about "Smart City" - ing. Giacomo Fioroni 10
About ICT infrastracture – 3 layers(2)
» The second layer is to communicate
» It's a network made up of
» cables
» (and) waves
that allows data circulation.
» Unfortunately Italy has a large delay. (We need to apply all
the actions that the Digital Agenda foresees – but this is a politics
argument...)
» Otherwise Trentino (our territory) is a very good
laboratory with the presence of an excellent network,
(both wired and wireless)
11. Intelligent Services for Digital Cities 2013 - Trento's perspective about "Smart City" - ing. Giacomo Fioroni 11
About “ICT infrastracture”: 3 layers(3)
» The third is the layer of processing and storage
» This layer enables a real time government condition,
thanks also to the extraordinary resources that are
available today in cloud computing.
» About this level it’s necessary to specify:
» the vertical applications, useful for particular services:
» Tele-surveillance
» Traffic
» Environmental monitoring etc....
» the necessary platforms of integration and control
that allow to manage the whole system

More and more Smart: The new
“Collaboration & Sharing” Approach
These elements can bring to
innovative and stimulating
approaches.
32. Intelligent Services for Digital Cities 2013 - Trento's perspective about "Smart City" - ing. Giacomo Fioroni 32
“Collaboration & Sharing” Approach
» Crowdsourcing: a revolution for public notices that enable
unknown populations to participate actively to decisions;
» Citizen sensing: a process that transforms citizens in sensors
for sensible cities;
» Co-design methods: that allow citizens to take part to the
planning of urban spaces and services;
» Gamification: a process that allows to use the videogames
methods to reproduce and simulate the functions of cities and
support decisional processes;
» Co-working: a process that is nearer to workers needs.
33. Intelligent Services for Digital Cities 2013 - Trento's perspective about "Smart City" - ing. Giacomo Fioroni 33
“Collaboration & Sharing” Approach
These new forms of collaboration and sharing – of risks, resources and
financings – let emerge an important factor:
» the third sector (citizens, universities, all of you, etc...) becomes an
important player for Smart City process.
In order to improve governance and cities performances, Mayors and local
authorities:
» have to change their approach
» (and) have to work following the networks logics with a support from
technologies.
Even in this case, thanks to the use of modern technology and the
possibilities offered by networks, citizens can do better than local
administrations if they are missing.
In South America, for example, volunteers paint cycle lanes and crosswalks
that urban planners have forgot.

» A new service (Opendata from the website) in rest format
(experimental):

Ather suggestions and tips: Try to....
Use and Integrate what is already ready
(do not reinvent the wheel)
Ask for if you can't find
(maybe already exist)
Collaborate with the others
(this helps so much)
Share what you develop
(this will exponentially grow your result)
