Essay About Being Optimistic
10 Great Tips to Being Optimistic Being optimistic is the main principle for most people. We may
often hear the statement about "be an optimist, not a pessimist!" shouted by people. Sometimes
you do it for yourself too. When facing such a failure or problem, this will not only help to relieve
your heart. Being optimistic will help someone to be healthy in physical and mental. An optimist
will find the best way in any circumstance and hope for every good thing can come to him/her. You
may have gone through thousands of hard times. However, if you are a born optimist then you
will not care of anything destructing you. Moreover, ways of thinking, taking actions, and putting
a decision can create a different result when being optimistic. So far it is easy to be an optimist
but in fact, be an optimist is just a theory. No matter how hard you have tried then still sometimes
you cannot handle your heart and emotion. Some pessimists may say if they cannot deal it like a
magic. You cannot be the pessimist for a whole life. Dream would be just a dream when you do
nothing. So there are many easy ways on how to act like an optimist. These tips will help you to
evoke the optimistic spirit....show more content...
Understand what optimist is The first way is to know what seems to be related to the word of
optimist. The answer is positive. So make friends with the positive. It does not mean you ignore
every difficulty you face actually. It is about finding the positive within an understanding. You need
to believe if there will always an opportunity around the problem to stay in positive thinking.
2.Find positive surrounding It is not only about the inside. It is also about how the outsiders affect
you. Surrounded by positive people will be the best therapy. They will be supportive as well as

It is always hard to say if we can be summed up by a simple assessment. After all, how much can
really be learned about us in ten questions. How much can truly be learned about ones
physiological makeup in a game of ten questions? How can we predict what will motivate us and
our peers? I can however say that I do agree for the most part of the assessment. The only part I
would say the mark was slightly missed on was "Optimism and hope"; while I do tend to try to be
fairly optimistic and hopeful I am truly more of a realist. However based on the couple questions
asked, I rated as very highly optimistic. Optimism is a wonderful quality to have but I do not think
that a business or anything in life can simply hinge on hopes and dreams. The assessment was
based on four parts; Efficacy, Resiliency, Hope and Optimism. I whole heartily agree with my
ratings when it comes to efficacy and resiliency. I truly feel like my ten years in the military
contributed to these characteristics. I will not produce something that would make myself or my
company look bad. I want everything that is produced to be truly among the best. I think the
characteristic I relate to the most and find my strongest would be resiliency. No matter what I
keep going, and no matter how many times I may fail I pick myself up and try harder. We are all
wired differently, the way we work, the way we prioritize, and what we deem as important varies
person to person. Some of us need that reassurance of being told we are doing a good job, while
others only want to get the job done without recognition. So what are ways to motivate us? Do
you go into work every day and strive for the best simply for the warm and fuzzies you feel
inside? Or do you go to work and hustle! Constantly reaching for that promotion? While this does
vary we will discuss a few different ways that will push us in the right direction of success!
Extrinsic motivation! I would have to say this may be the top way to motivate others. Extrinsic
motivation is when you are motivated by a "reward" whether it be monetary such as a bonus or a
raise, praise or some type of prize like time off, a vacation, or an item. I always have pushed myself
to strive for the best, but those projects

Looking at the bright side and noticing what is right as opposed to what is wrong is not normal for
most people. It is commonly thought that being optimistic is not being realistic and even though that
is true for some people, there are ways to be optimistic in a healthy manner that can help one see
life's challenges realistically even when times get tough. Being optimistic is a skill that takes effort
and thought but spending the time to work on cultivating optimism can be life changing. Cultivating
optimism is one of the happiness enhancing strategies that has been shown to increase happiness

This has had an impact on my life growing up because I was bullied for a majority of my life and
going to Disney was the one place where I did not feel judged. I want to be able to spread that
magic and joy to other children, especially those who have similar stories, by making them feel
special and included because I know how life changing that was for me.
The third goal I have is to lead an authentic life with a partner who cares about me and allows me
to be my true self. I believe that in society people work too hard to please others and fit into the
mold of what is viewed as "normal." I know that this lifestyle does not allow for authenticity or
creativity because I have adhered to it for several years and am now starting to face the
consequences of not being my true self around my family and friends. I want to be with someone
who makes me feel celebrated and special for who I am whether it be having funky colored hair,
going to Disney World as an adult, saying sarcastic funny comments, or whatever other aspects make

While creating these goals for myself I was able to think about more cohesive steps that will lead
me in the right direction towards achieving them. In order to become a successful journalist, I plan to

Chasing optimism in the face of challenges is a requirement that humans must conform to in order
to live a fulfilled life. Studies prove that optimists tend to be healthier through the hardships they
face no matter how severe. Even when in the face of challenges, being optimistic will lead you to
be more successful in every aspect. Not only will you be healthier, being optimistic leads to great
achievements in life. It also guides you to have better character. This essay will outline why you

Well, there are many ways, but it isn't easy. I like to think of it like a game of tag. You are "it" and
optimism is the one you're trying to "tag." However it isn't easy like a game of tag. Instead it is in
the face of challenges. This is just like if you're playing the game, but being watched very closely
and you can't mess up at all. It would be much harder to play tag when you're being watched just
like in any other circumstances. The challenges would be just like the "watcher," they are the
reason why it is that much harder to chase optimism just like winning in the game of tag. However,
you have to get past the barrier that is holding you back. Don't let the challenges ever overcome
you in life. If you always chase optimism in the face of challenges,a fulfilled life is guaranteed to

Throughout history great minds have wondered how individuals differed, and why they acted in
particular ways. Traits are defined as non–ending dimensions of personality on which people vary
(Carver, C., & Scheier M. 2012). Once traits were established they were researched and investigated
for their own unique and credible differences from other traits. One interesting trait that has been
extensively researched is optimism. From the great lyrical workings of Voltaire, whose stances were
those of fact and intellectualized conclusions, to the life changing writings of Eleanor Porter,
optimism as a trait was a unique and complex concept. In Voltaire's writings there were glimpses of
"non–rational thoughts among rational arguments" (Rockett, K....show more content...
The point of the novel is not the game but the ability of someone to forever change their way of
thinking after reading the book and perhaps playing the game in real life situations. These have deep
connecting with optimism and the power to change negative thoughts into positive ones. {Alice

definitions set by other psychologists must be stated.
Definitions and Real World Examples
"A useful definition of optimism was offered by anthropologist (Peterson, C. (2000). Lionel Tiger
(1979): "a mood or attitude associated with an expectation about the social or material future one
which the evaluator regards as socially desirable to his [or her] advantage, or for his [or her]
pleasure". The basic stance of Lionel Tiger's definition of optimism is that there is no single or
objective optimism at least not as characterized by its content (Tiger, L. 1993). What the
individual deems desirable it what optimism is considered to be. Lionel goes on to explain how
"Emotional Flavor" must be included in the context, and real world examples must also be
considered, such as how an individual was feeling on any particular day, or how pessimistic that
might be as a person (Tiger, L. 1993). An example listed by Lionel in the real world is two college
roommates. One roommate is more emotionally

Theories of optimism include dispositional models, and models of explanatory style. Methods to
measure optimism have been developed within both theoretical systems, such as various forms of
the Life Orientation Test, for the original definition of optimism, or the Attributional Style
Questionnaire designed to test optimism in terms of explanatory style.
Variation in optimism andpessimism is somewhat heritable[2] and reflects biological trait systems to
some degree.[3] It is also influenced by environmental factors, including family environment,[2] with
some suggesting it can be learned.[4] Optimism may also be linked to health.[5]

The residents living on the "agency" floor were gathered together and addressed by the staff. They
were told they were expected to take full responsibility for themselves; they should make sure they
had everything they needed and should make plans for how they want to spend their time. In
addition, each resident was given a gift – a potted green plant for their room, which was to be their
sole responsibility. The residents on the "no– agency" floor were also gathered together. However, in
contrast to the "agency" group they were told the staff would take wonderful care of them. They
did not need to lift a finger. They too were given a green plant for their room, but were told the
staff would water it. There was no real difference in the residents' reality on the two floors; a person
living on the "no– agency" floor could, if they wanted, water their plant at any time and make as
many decisions for themselves as their friend on the "agency" floor. However, their perception of
their own agency was different–and as a result, their actions were different; they were less likely to

Speech On Optimism
Jon Jusufi 8th grade
Sir Winston Churchill once said: " A pessimist sees the difficulty in every opportunity; an optimist
sees the opportunity in every difficulty."
If I think I cannot do something, after a while I will not be capable of doing it. And vice versa if I
truly believe that I can do something, I will try my best to do it. And this is not only about
actions we are capable of doing or not. Most importantly, it is about what we think we are. If you are
an optimist you love your life and think of yourself and the others around you as great people. If you
are a pessimist you do not really care about who you are and you do not give your life a meaning.
Optimism makes us have dreams. Those dreams eventually turn into goals and to accomplish those
goals we get perseverant, we care about the people around us and we try to live a healthy live.
Optimism leads to perseverance. If we really believe that what we think is right, optimism us

It is in human nature to work and live together with other people and to give a part of ourselves to
the others around us. Optimism is very important here because an optimist tries to make the
world a better place by making the people better people. Optimists help everyone in their
community as much as they can in every possible way. Sometimes people just need to hear some
good words and that is what optimists are great at. You have probably heard the story about the
one bad apple that turned all the good apples bad. Optimism is the exact opposite because one
optimist has the power to make all the people around him or her to see life from a positive point of
view. This is one of my favorite things about optimism because optimists do not only help
themselves, they help the world. And by helping the world they help themselves because the people
that you once helped will help you achieve your

Optimism
Optimism is a mental attitude or world view that interprets situations and events as being best
(optimized), meaning that in some way for factors that may not be fully comprehended, the present
moment is in an optimum state. The concept is typically extended to include the attitude of hope for
future conditions unfolding as optimal as well. The more broad concept of optimism is the
understanding that all of nature, past, present and future, operates by laws of optimization along the
lines of Hamilton's principle of optimization in the realm of physics. This understanding, although
criticized by counter views such as pessimism, idealism and realism, leads to a state of mind that

He hoped that society would eventually reach the state where calm reason would replace all violence
and force, that mind could eventually make matter subservient to it, and that intelligence could
discover the secret of immortality. Much of this philosophy is exemplified in the Houyhnhnms of
Jonathan Swift's Gulliver's Travels.
Panglossianism
The term "panglossianism" describes baseless optimism of the sort exemplified by the beliefs of
Pangloss from Voltaire's Candide, which are the opposite of his fellow traveller Martin's pessimism
and emphasis on free will. The phrase "panglossian pessimism" has been used to describe the
pessimistic position that, since this is the best of all possible worlds, it is impossible for anything to
get any better.
The panglossian paradigm is a term coined by Stephen Jay Gould and Richard Lewontin to refer to
the notion that everything has specifically adapted to suit specific purposes. Instead, they argue,
accidents and exaptation (the use of old features for new purposes) play an important role in the
process of evolution. Some other scientists however argue the implication that many (or most)
adaptionists are panglossians is a straw man.

The Characteristics Of Optimism
Optimism is defined as the tendency or disposition to look on the more favourable sites of events or
conditions and to expect the most favourable outcome. Optimists expect good things to happen to
them (Carver, Scheier & Segerstrom, 2010). Thus, optimism focuses on expectancies for the future.
Optimism is a trait by which it is relatively stable over time. The trait of optimism is heritable but
environmental factors in childhood play a role as well (Carver, et. al., 2010). In particular, the
presence of parental warmth and financial security is a predictor of optimism later in life.
The anticipation of good things happening leads to more favourable behaviour and has a positive
impact on people's lives (Carver, et. al., 2010). This is because optimists confront problems in a
more healthy way, they cope better with adversity and they have different resources, both social and
socioeconomic. Optimism has an influence on the feelings of people when they come across
problems. Because optimistic people expect good things to happen, even in bad times, they will
experience relatively positive feelings when they encounter problems. Optimists also cope with

Writing about one's possible self is a way to evoke writing about one's goals in life. Possible
selves are the ideas a person has about what they might become, what they would like to become
and what they are afraid of becoming in the future (Markus & Nurius, 1986). Possible selves create
a conceptual link between cognition and motivation. This is because possible selves are the thoughts
a person has about oneself in the future and these thoughts lead to or encourage certain behaviour to
reach this picture someone has about oneself. Possible selves are very useful because they provide
insight in future behaviour and about the current view some has about oneself (Markus & Nurius,

Essay on Optimism and Personality Trait
Optimism could be considered a condition of the mind that makes one believe that the best things
will always happen to them. A common idiom used to illustrate optimism versus pessimism is a
glass with water at the halfway point, where the optimist is said to see the glass as half full, but the
pessimist sees the glass as half empty. Optimists tend to see adversity as temporary; more
specifically they view the obstacle as limited to the situation and not generalized.

Optimism can be a powerful tool to motivate people to do things that we might have reservations
about. Humans have the intellectual power to look ahead and anticipate any likely outcomes. In
our everyday lives we take on numerous tasks a throughout our live whether it is studying for
finals, starting a new project at work or starting a new diet. An article by Annie Paul in Psychology
Today gave the example of how even an ordinary effort like going on a diet can benefit from dose
of optimism. A review of dieting studies show that more than two–thirds of dieters gain back more
weight than they initially thought. With such a grim outlook on dieting, optimism gives people the
much needed motivation to believe that their goal is achievable (Paul 2011). If you stopped and
took a minute to think about how much work you had to put in or how much of a risk you could be
taking, you might never even make the attempt. Optimism has such a commanding force that it has
the ability to convince you that things will work out just long enough to take the step forward and
make an effort to accomplish that task. For example, a student in medical school will put a
tremendous amount

Characteristics Of Optimism And Pessimism
Optimism and pessimism are personality traits relevant in the lives of every individual. Research of
the two is an escalating field; there have been more analyses on the effects of it in the last seven
years than in the previous twenty. Martin Seligman is known as the father of positive psychology
and believes optimism is seen as reacting to problems with a sense of confidence and strong personal
ability. Particularly, optimists think negative events are momentary and controllable. On the other
hand, pessimists focus on negativity and the darker aspects of a situation. They have expectations for
negative results, and tend to lack hope for the future. Optimism and pessimism aren't always clear in
every person; they are a continuum–a person...show more content...
It was also reported that the males had an inverse correlation between dispositional optimism and the
risk of cardiovascular death. The psychologist Schulz found that high scores on pessimism in the
LOT expressively projected premature death in young patients with breast cancer. Among patients
with neck or head cancer, optimists manifested significantly greater survival a year after diagnosis
when compared to pessimists. Optimism is linked with healthier physical well being compared to
pessimism. On the other hand, pessimism is correlated with excessive somatic complaints.
Studies by Seligman have suggested an inverse correlation between optimism and depressive
symptoms and suicidal ideation. Optimism helps individuals cope with hardships. According to
Good Therapy, pessimism has been tied to anxiety, stress, depression, and other mental health issues.
A pessimist is more likely to feel sad or anxious because they concentrate on negative outcomes.
However, a negative attitude does not automatically lead to the progression of mental health issues.
Defensive pessimism explains how negativity can benefit an individual. People who are defensively
pessimistic contemplate what might go wrong, allowing them to investigate their possible reactions
to the negative event. This goes against the stereotype of pessimists becoming angry when
undesirable situations occur–they can use their personality to

Essay on Dispositional Optimism
Behaviorism is an essential part of our daily lives since it reflects how we learn and deal with
varying circumstances. Schacter, Gilbert and Wegner (2011) states that behaviorism restricts
psychologists to focus purely on observable behavior; it rejects the emphasis of the conscious and
unconscious mind (p. 16). Ivan Pavlov, who was a Russian physiologist, discovered this concept
when he researched the role that saliva played on digestion. In his experiment, he gave the dogs'
meat powder to see how they would salivate to it. After a while, he noticed that the dogs' salivated
even before he gave them food; if the dogs' saw the white lab coat, put in the harness, hear the

F. Skinner furthered the behaviorist perspective and came across a new different type of learning:
operant conditioning, this new type of learning tells us that we learn best through the consequences
of our behaviors (p. 277).
Dispositional optimism is my choice of behavior for this assignment because it mirrors my
personal perspective, motivating me to investigate further on why I engage in this action
frequently, and the possible outcomes of this behavior. Dispositional optimism by definition is a
general expectation that more good things than bad will occur. Optimistic behavior can give
people positive insights, therefore making life struggles easier to bear. This paper will focus on
my research findings and my own experiences in regards to optimistic behavior. Nothing precedes
my optimistic behavior. There are no patterns that I have noticed with its occurrence, it occurs
sporadically. Nevertheless, I have noticed that this behavior normally occurs when I feel like I have
no choice but to be optimistic. Sometimes, I feel like I am obligated to be the optimistic person in
the group.
I really cannot pin point when this behavior started. I guess it all began when I saw my biological
parents fighting violently. I recall them screaming at each other fiercely, one of them stepped on my
toes, my father following my mother yelling at her, my mother yelling back at my father, and out of
nowhere there was a "boom," and that was it. With all the commotion

Why Is Being Optimistic Essay
Being "optimistic" is to have confidence in having a successful future. A future that is going to fill
every goal we have ever dreamed of achieving, conquering our greatest fears, and accomplishing the
un–accomplishable. "Everything will be okay in the end," and "Do not worry, it will all fall into
place eventually," are things we say to ourselves almost constantly. Why does everything only have
to be "okay" later on in life? We should not just be optimistic about the future; we need to aspire to
be optimistic about the present.
As privileged as most of us are, we tend to take things for granted far too often. Maybe we get
everything we want right when we wish for it and that one time we do not, we have a fit. Instead
of losing control and having a fit, we should automatically be able to look at everything else we
have that is superior in our lives, even if it is not material, and be glad with it. For instance,...show

Pessimism is lacking confidence in ones future, and expecting the worst possible outcome. Until
recently scientists believed one was either an optimist or a pessimist and one person could not
simply be both; a pessimist on some occasion and an optimist on another. Now, we know that it is
a completely possible circumstance which we see every day in our own lives. It is also known that
being an optimist is the most strived for way of life, but some cannot overcome seeing the worst
case scenario.
When I first heard of this essay contest I had really thought about whether I was an optimist or

10 Tips for Cultivating Optimism

  • 1. Essay About Being Optimistic 10 Great Tips to Being Optimistic Being optimistic is the main principle for most people. We may often hear the statement about "be an optimist, not a pessimist!" shouted by people. Sometimes you do it for yourself too. When facing such a failure or problem, this will not only help to relieve your heart. Being optimistic will help someone to be healthy in physical and mental. An optimist will find the best way in any circumstance and hope for every good thing can come to him/her. You may have gone through thousands of hard times. However, if you are a born optimist then you will not care of anything destructing you. Moreover, ways of thinking, taking actions, and putting a decision can create a different result when being optimistic. So far it is easy to be an optimist but in fact, be an optimist is just a theory. No matter how hard you have tried then still sometimes you cannot handle your heart and emotion. Some pessimists may say if they cannot deal it like a magic. You cannot be the pessimist for a whole life. Dream would be just a dream when you do nothing. So there are many easy ways on how to act like an optimist. These tips will help you to evoke the optimistic spirit....show more content... Understand what optimist is The first way is to know what seems to be related to the word of optimist. The answer is positive. So make friends with the positive. It does not mean you ignore every difficulty you face actually. It is about finding the positive within an understanding. You need to believe if there will always an opportunity around the problem to stay in positive thinking. 2.Find positive surrounding It is not only about the inside. It is also about how the outsiders affect you. Surrounded by positive people will be the best therapy. They will be supportive as well as giving you more Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 2. It is always hard to say if we can be summed up by a simple assessment. After all, how much can really be learned about us in ten questions. How much can truly be learned about ones physiological makeup in a game of ten questions? How can we predict what will motivate us and our peers? I can however say that I do agree for the most part of the assessment. The only part I would say the mark was slightly missed on was "Optimism and hope"; while I do tend to try to be fairly optimistic and hopeful I am truly more of a realist. However based on the couple questions asked, I rated as very highly optimistic. Optimism is a wonderful quality to have but I do not think that a business or anything in life can simply hinge on hopes and dreams. The assessment was based on four parts; Efficacy, Resiliency, Hope and Optimism. I whole heartily agree with my ratings when it comes to efficacy and resiliency. I truly feel like my ten years in the military contributed to these characteristics. I will not produce something that would make myself or my company look bad. I want everything that is produced to be truly among the best. I think the characteristic I relate to the most and find my strongest would be resiliency. No matter what I keep going, and no matter how many times I may fail I pick myself up and try harder. We are all wired differently, the way we work, the way we prioritize, and what we deem as important varies person to person. Some of us need that reassurance of being told we are doing a good job, while others only want to get the job done without recognition. So what are ways to motivate us? Do you go into work every day and strive for the best simply for the warm and fuzzies you feel inside? Or do you go to work and hustle! Constantly reaching for that promotion? While this does vary we will discuss a few different ways that will push us in the right direction of success! Extrinsic motivation! I would have to say this may be the top way to motivate others. Extrinsic motivation is when you are motivated by a "reward" whether it be monetary such as a bonus or a raise, praise or some type of prize like time off, a vacation, or an item. I always have pushed myself to strive for the best, but those projects Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 3. Persuasive Essay On Optimism Looking at the bright side and noticing what is right as opposed to what is wrong is not normal for most people. It is commonly thought that being optimistic is not being realistic and even though that is true for some people, there are ways to be optimistic in a healthy manner that can help one see life's challenges realistically even when times get tough. Being optimistic is a skill that takes effort and thought but spending the time to work on cultivating optimism can be life changing. Cultivating optimism is one of the happiness enhancing strategies that has been shown to increase happiness levels and positive thoughts about the future, which is the concept which I experimented with when I conducted the Best Possible Selves activity....show more content... This has had an impact on my life growing up because I was bullied for a majority of my life and going to Disney was the one place where I did not feel judged. I want to be able to spread that magic and joy to other children, especially those who have similar stories, by making them feel special and included because I know how life changing that was for me. The third goal I have is to lead an authentic life with a partner who cares about me and allows me to be my true self. I believe that in society people work too hard to please others and fit into the mold of what is viewed as "normal." I know that this lifestyle does not allow for authenticity or creativity because I have adhered to it for several years and am now starting to face the consequences of not being my true self around my family and friends. I want to be with someone who makes me feel celebrated and special for who I am whether it be having funky colored hair, going to Disney World as an adult, saying sarcastic funny comments, or whatever other aspects make up my being. While creating these goals for myself I was able to think about more cohesive steps that will lead me in the right direction towards achieving them. • 4. Optimism Research Papers Chasing optimism in the face of challenges is a requirement that humans must conform to in order to live a fulfilled life. Studies prove that optimists tend to be healthier through the hardships they face no matter how severe. Even when in the face of challenges, being optimistic will lead you to be more successful in every aspect. Not only will you be healthier, being optimistic leads to great achievements in life. It also guides you to have better character. This essay will outline why you must always chase optimism even in challenges' face. According to a study conducted by Rochester University,"Optimism had a remarkable impact on physical health." In their study, they tested all kinds of health problems from heart disease to pain...show more content... Well, there are many ways, but it isn't easy. I like to think of it like a game of tag. You are "it" and optimism is the one you're trying to "tag." However it isn't easy like a game of tag. Instead it is in the face of challenges. This is just like if you're playing the game, but being watched very closely and you can't mess up at all. It would be much harder to play tag when you're being watched just like in any other circumstances. The challenges would be just like the "watcher," they are the reason why it is that much harder to chase optimism just like winning in the game of tag. However, you have to get past the barrier that is holding you back. Don't let the challenges ever overcome you in life. If you always chase optimism in the face of challenges,a fulfilled life is guaranteed to Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 5. Throughout history great minds have wondered how individuals differed, and why they acted in particular ways. Traits are defined as non–ending dimensions of personality on which people vary (Carver, C., & Scheier M. 2012). Once traits were established they were researched and investigated for their own unique and credible differences from other traits. One interesting trait that has been extensively researched is optimism. From the great lyrical workings of Voltaire, whose stances were those of fact and intellectualized conclusions, to the life changing writings of Eleanor Porter, optimism as a trait was a unique and complex concept. In Voltaire's writings there were glimpses of "non–rational thoughts among rational arguments" (Rockett, K....show more content... The point of the novel is not the game but the ability of someone to forever change their way of thinking after reading the book and perhaps playing the game in real life situations. These have deep connecting with optimism and the power to change negative thoughts into positive ones. {Alice Mills"} While discovering the first writers to discuss or form the workings of optimism, the concrete definitions set by other psychologists must be stated. Definitions and Real World Examples "A useful definition of optimism was offered by anthropologist (Peterson, C. (2000). Lionel Tiger (1979): "a mood or attitude associated with an expectation about the social or material future one which the evaluator regards as socially desirable to his [or her] advantage, or for his [or her] pleasure". The basic stance of Lionel Tiger's definition of optimism is that there is no single or objective optimism at least not as characterized by its content (Tiger, L. 1993). What the individual deems desirable it what optimism is considered to be. Lionel goes on to explain how "Emotional Flavor" must be included in the context, and real world examples must also be considered, such as how an individual was feeling on any particular day, or how pessimistic that might be as a person (Tiger, L. 1993). Methods to measure optimism have been developed within both theoretical systems, such as various forms of the Life Orientation Test, for the original definition of optimism, or the Attributional Style Questionnaire designed to test optimism in terms of explanatory style. Variation in optimism andpessimism is somewhat heritable[2] and reflects biological trait systems to some degree.[3] It is also influenced by environmental factors, including family environment,[2] with some suggesting it can be learned.[4] Optimism may also be linked to health.[5] Removing Control "In reality, it was a control issue: Whenever I got outside my comfort zone, I just felt like...show more content... The residents living on the "agency" floor were gathered together and addressed by the staff. They were told they were expected to take full responsibility for themselves; they should make sure they had everything they needed and should make plans for how they want to spend their time. In addition, each resident was given a gift – a potted green plant for their room, which was to be their sole responsibility. The residents on the "no– agency" floor were also gathered together. However, in contrast to the "agency" group they were told the staff would take wonderful care of them. They did not need to lift a finger. They too were given a green plant for their room, but were told the staff would water it. There was no real difference in the residents' reality on the two floors; a person living on the "no– agency" floor could, if they wanted, water their plant at any time and make as many decisions for themselves as their friend on the "agency" floor. • 7. Speech On Optimism Jon Jusufi 8th grade Sir Winston Churchill once said: " A pessimist sees the difficulty in every opportunity; an optimist sees the opportunity in every difficulty." If I think I cannot do something, after a while I will not be capable of doing it. And vice versa if I truly believe that I can do something, I will try my best to do it. And this is not only about actions we are capable of doing or not. Most importantly, it is about what we think we are. If you are an optimist you love your life and think of yourself and the others around you as great people. If you are a pessimist you do not really care about who you are and you do not give your life a meaning. Optimism makes us have dreams. Those dreams eventually turn into goals and to accomplish those goals we get perseverant, we care about the people around us and we try to live a healthy live. Optimism leads to perseverance. It is in human nature to work and live together with other people and to give a part of ourselves to the others around us. Optimism is very important here because an optimist tries to make the world a better place by making the people better people. Optimists help everyone in their community as much as they can in every possible way. Sometimes people just need to hear some good words and that is what optimists are great at. You have probably heard the story about the one bad apple that turned all the good apples bad. Optimism is the exact opposite because one optimist has the power to make all the people around him or her to see life from a positive point of view. This is one of my favorite things about optimism because optimists do not only help themselves, they help the world. And by helping the world they help themselves because the people that you once helped will help you achieve your Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 8. Optimism ––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––– Optimism Optimism is a mental attitude or world view that interprets situations and events as being best (optimized), meaning that in some way for factors that may not be fully comprehended, the present moment is in an optimum state. The concept is typically extended to include the attitude of hope for future conditions unfolding as optimal as well. The more broad concept of optimism is the understanding that all of nature, past, present and future, operates by laws of optimization along the lines of Hamilton's principle of optimization in the realm of physics. This understanding, although criticized by counter views such as pessimism, idealism and realism, leads to a state of mind that ...show more content... He hoped that society would eventually reach the state where calm reason would replace all violence and force, that mind could eventually make matter subservient to it, and that intelligence could discover the secret of immortality. Much of this philosophy is exemplified in the Houyhnhnms of Jonathan Swift's Gulliver's Travels. Panglossianism The term "panglossianism" describes baseless optimism of the sort exemplified by the beliefs of Pangloss from Voltaire's Candide, which are the opposite of his fellow traveller Martin's pessimism and emphasis on free will. The phrase "panglossian pessimism" has been used to describe the pessimistic position that, since this is the best of all possible worlds, it is impossible for anything to get any better. The panglossian paradigm is a term coined by Stephen Jay Gould and Richard Lewontin to refer to the notion that everything has specifically adapted to suit specific purposes. Instead, they argue, accidents and exaptation (the use of old features for new purposes) play an important role in the process of evolution. Some other scientists however argue the implication that many (or most) adaptionists are panglossians is a straw man. Why People Believe Weird Things: Pseudoscience, Superstition, and Other Confusions of Our Time Michael Shermer relates Frank J. • 9. The Characteristics Of Optimism Optimism is defined as the tendency or disposition to look on the more favourable sites of events or conditions and to expect the most favourable outcome. Optimists expect good things to happen to them (Carver, Scheier & Segerstrom, 2010). Thus, optimism focuses on expectancies for the future. Optimism is a trait by which it is relatively stable over time. The trait of optimism is heritable but environmental factors in childhood play a role as well (Carver, et. al., 2010). In particular, the presence of parental warmth and financial security is a predictor of optimism later in life. The anticipation of good things happening leads to more favourable behaviour and has a positive impact on people's lives (Carver, et. al., 2010). This is because optimists confront problems in a more healthy way, they cope better with adversity and they have different resources, both social and socioeconomic. Optimism has an influence on the feelings of people when they come across problems. Because optimistic people expect good things to happen, even in bad times, they will experience relatively positive feelings when they encounter problems. Possible selves are the ideas a person has about what they might become, what they would like to become and what they are afraid of becoming in the future (Markus & Nurius, 1986). Possible selves create a conceptual link between cognition and motivation. This is because possible selves are the thoughts a person has about oneself in the future and these thoughts lead to or encourage certain behaviour to reach this picture someone has about oneself. • 10. Essay on Optimism and Personality Trait Optimism could be considered a condition of the mind that makes one believe that the best things will always happen to them. A common idiom used to illustrate optimism versus pessimism is a glass with water at the halfway point, where the optimist is said to see the glass as half full, but the pessimist sees the glass as half empty. Optimists tend to see adversity as temporary; more specifically they view the obstacle as limited to the situation and not generalized. 1) How does the personality trait develop in humans? Where does it appear to come from? Parents also reinforce optimism and perseverance by encouraging their children to deal with any type of obstacle in a positive way. Life is full of hurdles but it's the way we deal with these difficulties that shape our expectations of things. 2) What purpose or function does the trait appear to serve? (20 pts) Optimism can be a powerful tool to motivate people to do things that we might have reservations about. Humans have the intellectual power to look ahead and anticipate any likely outcomes. In our everyday lives we take on numerous tasks a throughout our live whether it is studying for finals, starting a new project at work or starting a new diet. An article by Annie Paul in Psychology Today gave the example of how even an ordinary effort like going on a diet can benefit from dose of optimism. A review of dieting studies show that more than two–thirds of dieters gain back more weight than they initially thought. With such a grim outlook on dieting, optimism gives people the much needed motivation to believe that their goal is achievable (Paul 2011). If you stopped and took a minute to think about how much work you had to put in or how much of a risk you could be taking, you might never even make the attempt. Optimism has such a commanding force that it has the ability to convince you that things will work out just long enough to take the step forward and make an effort to accomplish that task. • 12. Characteristics Of Optimism And Pessimism Optimism and pessimism are personality traits relevant in the lives of every individual. Research of the two is an escalating field; there have been more analyses on the effects of it in the last seven years than in the previous twenty. Martin Seligman is known as the father of positive psychology and believes optimism is seen as reacting to problems with a sense of confidence and strong personal ability. Particularly, optimists think negative events are momentary and controllable. On the other hand, pessimists focus on negativity and the darker aspects of a situation. They have expectations for negative results, and tend to lack hope for the future. Optimism and pessimism aren't always clear in every person; they are a continuum–a person...show more content... Nevertheless, I have noticed that this behavior normally occurs when I feel like I have no choice but to be optimistic. Sometimes, I feel like I am obligated to be the optimistic person in the group. I really cannot pin point when this behavior started. I guess it all began when I saw my biological parents fighting violently. I recall them screaming at each other fiercely, one of them stepped on my toes, my father following my mother yelling at her, my mother yelling back at my father, and out of nowhere there was a "boom," and that was it. A future that is going to fill every goal we have ever dreamed of achieving, conquering our greatest fears, and accomplishing the un–accomplishable.
