The very first teacher to use a
computer in a classroom is Brig. Gen.
Robert F. McDermott. He used games
and simulations to teach astronaut
candidates space physics.
Founding U.S. Air Force Academy
dean of the faculty from 1956 to
1968, McDermott went on to serve as
chairman and chief executive
officer of USAA, for 25 years. He was
one of the first American scholars to

In 1761 the Spanish missions utilized
started what would become the first
municipal water distribution system in
North America—a ditch, a dam, and
ultimately a network of irrigation canals—
aqueducts or “acequias”.
The first canal dug at the San Antonio
Springs was the Alamo Madre in 1745,
and it diverted water from the east side of
the headwaters just below the Springs.
The site is present-day Brackenridge Park
and host to the San Antonio Zoo, Sunken
Garden Theater, Japanese Tea Garden,

children's amusement park.

Fiesta, Battle of the

of the defeat of Santa
Anna at the Battle of San
Jacinto. In 1845 Texas
became an Independent
Republic.
The U.S. Army has maintained a presence in the Alamo City since 1845. During that time, the installation has performed five distinct
and important roles: that of a headquarters, logistical base, mobilization and training site, garrison and provider of medical support. At
first, the Army leased facilities in the City of San Antonio, including the Alamo. In fact, the Army repaired the Alamo structure and added
a roof so it could be used as a headquarters. In 1876, the Army began to move its facilities to the present site of Fort Sam Houston
upon completion of the Quadrangle. The post has since increased in size from the original 92 acres donated to the Army by the city, to
approximately 3,000 acres today.

Karst Aquifer
The Edwards Aquifer is a karst aquifer and is
characterized by the presence of sinkholes, sinking
streams, caves, large springs, and highly productive
water wells. Karst aquifers are considered triple
permeability aquifers - water is contained in the rock
matrix, in fractures and faults, and in caves and
conduits.
Conduits or solution channels within the Aquifer range
from the size of a finger to 10’s of feet in diameter.
The interconnected fractures and conduits in the
Edwards Aquifer accounts for its extremely high
yielding wells and springs.
The San Antonio Segment of the Balcones Fault Zone
Edwards Aquifer (the “Edwards Aquifer” or “Aquifer”) in

THE FUTURE IS HERE
“Tim’s Vermeer follows the meticulous
lengths Jenison goes to in order to realize his
personal dream of recreating Vermeer’s
studio and painting his masterpiece “The
Music Lesson” (1662-1664).
Tim’s Vermeer is a fascinating new
documentary which explores subjects such as
art, technology, and obsession. The film is
directed by Teller, best known as the silent
partner in the illusionist duo Penn and Teller.
Penn Jillette is also featured as a narrator in
the film as well as being instrumental in its
production.” --C.L. Illsley, Art and Technology
