Galatians 2:16-21
by Jim Bradshaw
Sunday Morning, July 28, 2013
2. Made Righteous by Faith
Gal 2:16 NKJV knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the
law but by faith in Jesus Christ, even we have believed in Christ Jesus,
that we might be justified by faith in Christ and not by the works of the
law; for by the works of the law no flesh shall be justified.
Gal 2:21 NKJV I do not set aside the grace of God; for if righteousness
comes through the law, then Christ died in vain."
If we could be made righteous by following a
list of Do’s and Don’ts then Christ would have
died on the Cross for no purpose
Eph 2:8 NKJV For by grace you have been saved through
faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God,
3. Made Righteous by Faith
Rom 5:6-11 NKJV For when we were still without strength, in due time
Christ died for the ungodly. (7) For scarcely for a righteous man will
one die; yet perhaps for a good man someone would even dare to die.
(8) But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we
were still sinners, Christ died for us. (9) Much more then, having now
been justified by His blood, we shall be saved from wrath through Him.
(10) For if when we were enemies we were reconciled to God through
the death of His Son, much more, having been reconciled, we shall be
saved by His life. (11) And not only that, but we also rejoice in God
through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received the
reconciliation.
4. Made Righteous by Faith
Gal 3:23-25 KJV But before faith came, we were kept under the
law, shut up unto the faith which should afterwards be revealed. (24)
Wherefore the law was our schoolmaster to bring us unto Christ, that we
might be justified by faith. (25) But after that faith is come, we are no
longer under a schoolmaster.
Justified
Basically it means: Just-if-I’d-never sinned.
Dikaloō – literally means to be righteous;
ME rightwise – i.e. right before God.
5. Made Righteous by Faith
Is it faith “in” or faith “of” Jesus Christ (It makes a difference, James 2:19)
Gal 2:16 KJV Knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the
law, but by the faith of Jesus Christ, even we have believed in Jesus
Christ, that we might be justified by the faith of Christ, and not by the
works of the law: for by the works of the law shall no flesh be justified.
Rom 3:21-26 KJV But now the righteousness of God without the law is
manifested, being witnessed by the law and the prophets; (22) Even the
righteousness of God which is by faith of Jesus Christ unto all and upon all
them that believe: for there is no difference: (23) For all have sinned, and
come short of the glory of God; (24) Being justified freely by his grace
through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus: (25) Whom God hath set forth
to be a propitiation through faith in his blood, to declare his righteousness for
the remission of sins that are past, through the forbearance of God; (26) To
declare, I say, at this time his righteousness: that he might be just, and the
justifier of him which believeth in Jesus.
6. Made Righteous by Faith
Is it faith “in” or faith “of” Jesus Christ (It makes a difference)
Gal 2:16 KJV Knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the
law, but by the faith of Jesus Christ, even we have believed in Jesus
Christ, that we might be justified by the faith of Christ, and not by the
works of the law: for by the works of the law shall no flesh be justified.
Pisteōs Iēsou Christou – is “faith of Jesus Christ.”
Jud 1:3 KJV Beloved, when I gave all diligence to write unto you of the
common salvation, it was needful for me to write unto you, and exhort
you that ye should earnestly contend for the faith which was once
delivered unto the saints.
7. Gal 2:17-18 NKJV "But if, while we seek to be justified by Christ, we
ourselves also are found sinners, is Christ therefore a minister of sin?
Certainly not! (18) For if I build again those things which I destroyed, I
make myself a transgressor.
We cannot be Righteous and keep on Sinning Read 1 John 1:7-9
1Jn 5:18 ESV We know that everyone who has been born of God does
not keep on sinning (PAI), but he who was born of God protects him, and
the evil one does not touch him.
8. Gal 2:17-18 NKJV "But if, while we seek to be justified by Christ, we
ourselves also are found sinners, is Christ therefore a minister of sin?
Certainly not! (18) For if I build again those things which I destroyed, I
make myself a transgressor.
We cannot regain what we destroy If we live in sin we tear down our
house with God, a house that cannot
be built back by ourselves; Rom. 3:10
Act 8:21-22 NKJV You have neither part nor portion in this matter, for
your heart is not right in the sight of God. (22) Repent therefore of this
your wickedness, and pray God if perhaps the thought of your heart may
be forgiven you.
10. We Must live to God
Gal 2:19-21 NKJV For I through the law died to the law that I might
live to God. (20) I have been crucified with Christ; it is no longer I who
live, but Christ lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I
live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself for me.
(21) I do not set aside the grace of God; for if righteousness comes
through the law, then Christ died in vain."
Php 1:21 NKJV For to me, to live is Christ, and to die is gain.
Rom 6:7-8 NKJV For he who has died has been freed from sin. (8)
Now if we died with Christ, we believe that we shall also live with
Him,
12. We Must Crucify the flesh
Gal 2:19-21 NKJV For I through the law died to the law that I might
live to God. (20) I have been crucified (RPI) with Christ; it is no longer
I who live, but Christ lives in me; and the life which I now live in the
flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself
for me. (21) I do not set aside the grace of God; for if righteousness
comes through the law, then Christ died in vain."
Gal 5:24 NKJV And those who are Christ's have crucified the flesh
with its passions and desires.
13. For Christ to LIVE in US, WE Must live by the FAITH of the Son of God
Gal 2:20-21 KJV I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not
I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live
by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me.
(21) I do not frustrate the grace of God: for if righteousness come by the
law, then Christ is dead in vain.
14. For Christ to LIVE in US, WE Must live by the FAITH of the Son of God
Rom 6:3-6 NKJV Or do you not know that as many of us as were
baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into His death? (4) Therefore
we were buried with Him through baptism into death, that just as Christ
was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also
should walk in newness of life. (5) For if we have been united together
in the likeness of His death, certainly we also shall be in the likeness of
His resurrection, (6) knowing this, that our old man was crucified with
Him, that the body of sin might be done away with, that we should no
longer be slaves of sin.
