2. WHAT IS POLITICS?
POLITICS
(from Greek politikos "of, for, or relating to
citizens") as a term is generally applied to
the art or science of running governmental or state
affairs, including behavior within civil governments, but also
applies to institutions, fields, and special interest groups
such as the corporate, academic, and religious segments of
society. It consists of "social relations
involving authority or power" and to the methods and
tactics used to formulate and apply policy.

5. PRAYER RALLY
August 2, 2012, 6:57pm
Manila Archbishop Luis Antonio G. Tagle has enjoined the
faithful to attend a prayer rally against the Reproductive
Health (RH) bill on Saturday, August 4, at the Shrine of
Mary Queen of Peace (EDSA Shrine) from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m.
In a circular, the prelate called on the clergy, religious men
and women, mandated organizations, committed lay men
and women, and the youth in the archdiocese to participate
in the prayer power gathering called “Prayer Power Rally
Against the RH Bill” in solidarity with the initiative of the
Episcopal Commission on Family and Life. (Christina I.

6. DRILON FILED SENATE BILL NO. 2407
Frequent suspension of classes makes Pepe and Pilar dull.
So contends Sen. Franklin Drilon who renewed his call on Friday for a change in
the country’s school calendar amid frequent and lengthy class suspensions due to
the heavy rains and widespread flooding this week.
“The [students’] being absent in school means less absorption and less time to
learn,” Drilon said in a statement, adding that the school opening should be
rescheduled so as not to coincide with the country’s monsoon season.
In 2010, Drilon filed Senate Bill No. 2407 seeking to amend the Administrative
Code so that the school opening date “shall not be earlier than the first day of
September nor later than the last day of October of each year unless prevented by
fortuitous events.”
The Administrative Code currently gives the secretary of education the discretion
to set the opening of classes not earlier than June nor later than the last day of
July.

8. PHILIPPINES ASIA’S NEXT TIGER
ECONOMY
The Philippines is now out of the doldrums and on the
verge of an economic takeoff, according to two visiting
foreign economists.
The Philippines under President Benigno Aquino III has
the “best chance” of becoming a tiger economy in Asia as
emerging markets led by China have started slowing
down, while the debt crisis in the euro zone and the faltering
United States economy continue to spook the markets, said
Drs. Tyler Cowen and John Nye.
10. PHILIPPINES TO BUY 2 MISSILE
WARSHIPS
At last, the Philippines will be getting real warships.
Defense Secretary Voltaire Gazmin on Thursday said the government was planning to buy next year its first two modern
warships armed with surface-to-air and surface-to-surface missiles and capable of hunting down submarines in the West
Philippine Sea.
Defense Undersecretary Fernando Manalo said this would be the first time that the Philippines would have warships with
missiles and other modern armaments.
Gazmin said the Department of National Defense was looking to acquire the missile frigates from the Italian Navy. The two
Maestrale-class frigates cost P11.7 billion.
“These are warships,” Gazmin said in a press conference. “They have antisubmarine capabilities and surface -to-air missiles.
This is really for battle. We could get the frigates by November next year.”
He said the frigates would be “more lethal” than the Hamilton-class cutters the US Coast Guard was selling to the Philippines.
The Maestrale class of frigates was initially commissioned for the Italian Navy in 1982. They were primarily designed for
antisubmarine warfare but are also capable of fighting on the surface and shooting down aircraft.
Equipped with several electronic warfare systems, these ships also have torpedoes, long -range guns and automatic weapons.
The Italian Navy will retire these frigates next January, Manalo said.
12. CAVITE VIES FOR ANOTHER SEAL OF
GOOD HOUSEKEEPING AWARD
TRECE MARTIRES CITY, Cavite, Aug 11 (PIA) –-The provincial government will once again vie for
the Seal of Good Housekeeping (SGH) award given by the Department of Interior and Local
Government (DILG).
The Seal is a mechanism comprising a set of criteria aimed at recognizing local government units
with good performance in internal housekeeping, particularly in the areas of planning, sound fiscal
management, transparency and accountability, and valuing performance management.
In a letter addressed to all department heads, Efren C. Nazareno, engineer and provincial
administrator for External Affairs, said, “Awards and citations play significant role in governance as
these recognitions give us, civil servants, fulfillment and validation that our efforts are bringing
positive change to our constituents.”
For this, Nazareno asked department heads to prepare and furnish his office a semestral
accomplishment report which will cover the period of January to June of this year.
He said the report will be based on the Annual Investment Program format and should be
accompanied by a narrative report, among which are pictures, project proposals, minutes of
meetings and other pertinent documents as attachments.
Nazareno is certain that they will get another Seal of Good Housekeeping for the province. (RF -PIA
