The document discusses the design of the Kontakios iOS app, which was created for life insurance agents and financial advisors. It focuses on how the app implemented Apple's three core design concepts of deference, clarity, and depth. Key aspects discussed include using a simple home screen with clearly labeled modules, maximizing content while avoiding clutter, using legible text and intuitive icons, and employing popovers and transitions to simplify the interface while adding visual layers and depth. The goal was to design an app that follows these guidelines to create an easy to use experience.

how we implemented the
core concepts of
Apple’s Human Interface Guidelines
in the design of our business app,
Kontakios.

3. Kontakios
is an app designed for iOS
that run in iPads.
Used by life insurance agents and
financial advisors in selling insurance
and bancassurance products.
5. Focus on the content.
Simplify the interface.
1 Deference.
6. The Home page UI
is simple and
clearly show the
modules that users
can navigate.
The summary
data is subdued to
provide focus to
the menu and to
avoid clutter.
7. In the Contacts
page, content is
maximised but do
not look crowded.
Negative space
gives focus to the
major sections and
provides breathing
room.
8. Text is legible. Colour and fonts
suggest which are highlighted,
neutral or subdued.
Icons are precise and lucid.
Its function are obvious.
2 Clarity.
9. Even with a lot of
data in the
Contacts page, text
is readable in
different sizes and
colour. It also
distinguishes the
major sections.
Text icons are lucid
and obvious.
10. The same concept
of text and font
clarity is also
shown in the
Application page.
Screens are
descriptive.
Obvious text icons
clearly show what
can be done in
the UI.
11. Visual layers and realistic
motion impart vitality
and
heighten people’s delight
and understanding.
3 Depth.
12. Popovers to view
details or
encode data is a
major design
strategy to
simplify the UI.
This visual layer
also provide the
depth to the UI.
13. Screen transitions
are only used to
open the 3
modules from the
home page.
Since popovers are
used heavily, their
transitions are not
implemented to
avoid being
irritating over time.
14. Designing apps that rock is
not so hard, is it?
There you have it.
Just follow the core concepts.
And iterate until you get it right.
15. AboutMe
My blogs will try to convince everybody to learn how to
code. How to become creators of technology.
This became a passion as I see people using technology in
their daily lives but have no idea how it works. Sadly, almost
all of us are mere consumers.
As a software developer, I have always been interested in
learning technology and how I can share what I’ve learned
specially to others with professions outside my field.
16. This is part of a series of posts about how
I can convince you to be a coder.
Hope you are already convinced,
grasshopper.
