After graduating from Canterbury School, where he was a varsity squash player, John Steers enrolled at Elon University in North Carolina. In addition to earning his bachelor's degree in strategic communications, John Steers is minoring in sport and event management. He intends to pursue a career in music and event production.

3.  The Sport and Event Management program at Elon
University guides students through the complexity of
producing sports and recreation activities.
Participants learn to plan and manage events in
private, public, and commercial settings. The
curriculum joins classroom lessons with field
experience to provide an all-encompassing education
in the industry. Available courses cover issues
ranging from facility management and legal concerns
to business communications and policy development.
Moreover, Elon University can connect its students
with internships in sports journalism, nonprofit
organizations, and multimedia entities.

4.  The department also gives back to its
community. In November 2013, Elon
University Sport and Event Management
students raised nearly $3,000 for two local
nonprofit organizations. Donations garnered
through “Elon's Got Talent” and “Casino
Night” went to Allied Churches and student
scholarships, respectively. Over the past
decade, the institution has collected some
$45,000 for local philanthropic efforts.
